#5 Ohio State (25-8) vs #4 Gonzaga (31-4) - Saturday, March 17 @ ~7:45 ET (CBS)

Imagine if we would have drawn literally any of the other 4 seed matchups at this point
when i watched the unveiling of our 4 on sunday, i was reminded of watching the unveiling of the brackets for the 2011 tournament. kentucky as our 4 was the shaft of all shafts. freakin' kentucky was as hot as any team in the nation coming into the tournament. 5 of their 6 conference losses were by a combined 10 points after regulation. before the brackets were announced, uk was one of a few teams i absolutely did not want to see before the final four. of course they gave us uk in the sweet sixteen. of course. and of course they gave us gonzaga this year.

I thought the 2011 assignment was worse, since OSU was allegedly the overall #1 seed, but somehow wound up in the toughest, most top-heavy bracket.

oh, no doubt about that. kentucky was a 4-seed despite entering the tournament as the ap #11 team. we got by far the most difficult 4-seed despite deserving the worst 4-seed since we were the overall #1 team.

also...

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky were the 2/3/4-seeds in our region.

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky entered the following season in the preseason ap top 5.

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky were 1-seeds in the following season's tournament.

And the following year, OSU beat Gonzaga in the tournament on the way to a final 4 appearance - where they surrendered a nine point halftime lead over Kansas to lose by two in the final seconds.

That was a pair of frustrating finishes (2011-2012), even though they were successful by any reasonable measure, because they were so damn close to being more.

That lost to Kansas wasn't as bad because we had virtually no chance at beating that UK team in the championship. That 2011 one hurts, they were the best team in the country that year with a bunch of really good kids

Maybe, but I'd still prefer a loss in the final to a loss in the semifinal. Kind of like this year, I'd rather see a loss to Houston in the round of 16 than a loss to Gonzaga in the round of 32.

Before the game starts it's nice to reflect on this season. In the prime of the Thad years watching Ohio State basketball was just as much fun as watching the football team if not more. The last two seasons of Thad were just miserable, I wasn't even really able to watch the games.

Even though we only have made it to the second round this team has brought the excitement back to Ohio State basketball. They have a great bunch of kids who are fun to watch and I'm excited for next year instead of being pessimistic. If this is KBD, Tate, and Kam's last game that will be sad indeed. What a great group they are

2011 broke my heart. It was the one time in my lifetime that OSU had, without reasonable question, the best team in the country. And I told people going into the tournament that Kentucky was a bad match up and the most dangerous opponent in the field for the Buckeyes. If they'd won that game, I think they would most likely have won it all. As bad as any football loss IMO.
