AD Trev Alberts drops wrestling team via phone call hours after they win nationals.

I hate Trev Alberts more every day.

University of Omaha (Trev is the AD there) wins the NCAA Div 2 team title for the third year in a row & the very night that they won the NCAA tournament, he announced to drop the program. The program is fully capable of funding themselves on top of it all. Makes me wish he was just a puppet for ESPN again instead of in a position to screw kids over. Classless.

Trev changed the locks to the athletic facilities so the wrestling team could not get in when they returned with their National Championship trophy.

Here is a column on the travesty.

Here is a blog by a former team and world team member on what you can do to help.

Coach Denney said he spoke with Alberts late Saturday night about the decision to drop the program. Denney said Alberts told him the decision wasn?t even about money. Denney raises almost all of the money for his own program?s expenses with all his tournaments, camps and fundraisers.

Alberts said the decision was because the Summit League did not offer wrestling.

Denney is one of the most respected coaches, in any sport, in the country. He handles himself in a dignified manner and has coached more than 40 Academic All-Americans. Wrestling is by far the most successful program in that school?s history.

The early season Kaufman-Brand Open is the biggest college wrestling tournament in the country, with top programs like Iowa, Oklahoma State and Minnesota competing every November at UNO.

Alberts is a guy who has done virtually nothing to support wrestling.

Shortly after Alberts arrived on campus, Denney said Alberts asked him if wrestling was a ?club sport? at UNO. Talk about a slap in the face to Denney, who puts in countless hours during and outside the season to keep his program thriving.

Doubt it'll make a difference, but had to try something, so I pasted

"University of Omaha just dropped their wrestling program. Their Athletic Director (and former NFL bust & ESPN moron) told the team the news via a phone call just hours after they won their third straight NCAA Div. 2 Team Title."

to Outside The Lines in hopes that they'd run a story

Couldn't they wrestle in a different conference, Trev?

I think a conference with zero wrestling would be glad to make an exception for a perennial champion.

I believe the article stated that two other schools (directional Dakotas, I think) did exactly that.

Hey Trev:

So they're dropping 2 established sports while adding 2 new sports, just so they can join the Summit League in basketball? Not only did he deliver the decision in a classless manner, it doesn't make much sense. Does he have delusions of March Madness grandeur?

I think this quote from Trev, when he was fired by ESPN, says a lot:

"I fully understood the privilege of the seat I sat in. And it was never about wanting to be part of the GameDay crew. But no matter what business you're in, if you're not respected internally, you're going to have a hard time being respected externally."

Look in a mirror, Trev.

Trev proposed it to the board of regents today, and they passed his decision to drop the program.

A fellow wrestling friend form the team gave this speech http://serve.castfire.com/video/539271/539271_2011-03-25-102011.mp3 to the board, as did other wrestlers, but it made no difference. The board didn't even ask difficult questions about the decision. The team was able to raise an additional $130,000 in fundraising in the past week alone, but none of it was enough.
