Titans' top pick arrested on assault, vandalism charges

    July 13, 2005
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans' top draft pick, cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones surrendered to police Wednesday on charges of assault and felony vandalism stemming from a fight at a nightclub.

Jones was released from custody after posting bond. He did not comment to reporters as he left the jail.

"If this gentleman was not a Titan, you would not be here," Jones' lawyer, Roger May, told reporters.

A Titans spokesman said the team was aware of the situation and was monitoring it but had no immediate comment.

In a court appearance, nightclub owner Robert Gaddy said Jones grabbed his shirt, hit him and broke his necklace after Gaddy asked three of Jones' friends to leave the club. Gaddy told police he asked Jones' friends to leave because "they were smoking drugs."

In April, Georgia authorities investigated a report that Jones was involved in a fight in a nightclub near Atlanta in April, but no charges were filed against him in that case.

The 5-foot-10 Jones, who played for West Virginia, was the first defensive player taken in the NFL Draft in April.

He hurt himself in the Titans' rookie orientation on April 29 and couldn't practice with the team until June 14.

But Tennessee took him for his 4.45-second speed in the 40-yard dash and 37 1/2-inch vertical jump as they try to replace veterans Samari Rolle and Andre Dyson.

    "Titans’ Pacman Talks Back"

Metro Police broke up a major drug trafficking ring involving millions worth of narcotics and as News 2’s Andy Cordan first reported Thursday, the name Pacman Jones figured prominently in Friday’s press conference. Nine people were arrested in the seven month long investigation. As news 2 first reported Thursday night, the man police call the main target of the drug investigation is an "acquaintance" of Tennessee Titan defensive back Pacman Jones. Members of the 20th Judicial Drug Task Force began rolling in corvettes seized in the raid. They showcased a portion of the 1,600 pounds of pot and 128 pounds of cocaine they...</td></tr> <tr height="100%" valign="top"><td style="vertical-align: top;">
</td> <td> <end>confiscated, not to mention just a sample of some of the $600,000 they seized in drug money. </end> As impressive as this all is, a car, a red Cadillac with the spinners and the Pacman logo embroidered into the head rests of the seats, is what the media most wanted to know about. Authorities said the car is registered to a person out of Nevada, but they admit the vehicle also has a connection to Jones. The connection was not disclosed at the press conference.
Police also confirmed what that Jones is an acquaintance of Darryl Jerome Moore who Chief Ronal Serpas calls the focal point of the entire drug investigation.
News 2’s<end> Cordan visited Jones Friday afternoon and needless to say he was not happy to see him. Jones told Cordan Thursday he no knowledge of any drugs or how the car might be connected to the alleged drug trafficking operation. </end>
At this point in the investigation, Jones has not been charged with any crime. When asked if he had been questioned by police or if he were cooperating with the investigation, the District Attorney declined to comment, saying the case was still very active. More arrests, he said were expected.

As a Titans fan, I was hoping that they'd draft Antrel Rolle last season. However, they didn't draft him. It's completely ridiculous that they would even consider drafting and signing a guy to a huge deal when he's been known to have trouble with the law. The guy is a complete thug and an embarassment to the Titans' organization and the NFL.

The WVU coaches spoke about Pac-Man while we were there for the clinic. They said he came in as a troubled kid then bought completely into the system and loved the discipline. When he left, he knew he would struggle and called the coaches daily...as he got deeper into the NFL life, the calls became less frequent until they became rare.

This is not a surprise for those who know him best.

That's too bad. It's so disappointing to see anyone waste their talent, but when so many people know it's going to happen and still cannot stop it, it's truly tragic. On the other hand, it's hard to feel very sorry for him; it's not like he hasn't had several "second" chances.....

Its tragic that someone who has the ability and means to do so much good can't help but make wrong decisions.
