Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

His track record is a little longer than Alex Grinch's
His track record is longer than the few weeks since you began following him:

Grinch has been the WSU defensive coordinator for three seasons, and the Cougars were tied for No. 6 in turnovers forced (27) and No. 9 in pass defense (167.4 yards per game) this season.

Both stats are intriguing because Grinch and the Cougars played USC's Sam Darnold.

His defense was also best in the country on third down.
Grinch is from Grove City and played his college football at Mount Union, where he won three national championships. Those are two major Ohio connections that can only help from a recruiting standpoint.

Plus, Grinch fits into the category of the young rising star, much like Tom Herman was when he arrived. Urban Meyer has not added a young rising assistant since Herman left to go to Houston.

But a big reason for why Grinch could be a good fit is because what his defense does well is what OSU struggled with this season. And his defense plays a very similar attacking style.

And to continue piling on, Tom Herman's offense's performance at Iowa State:

2009: 364.7 ypg / 20.5 ppg
2010: 317.4 ypg / 21.7 ppg
2011: 386.5 ypg / 22.7 ppg

That's awfully underwhelming on the surface. In fact, those are pretty bad numbers. He turned out okay.

Now, lets take a look at Grinch:
2014: 442.3 ypg / 38.6 ppg (year prior to Grinch)
2015: 416.8 ypg / 27.7 ppg
2016: 406.2 ypg /26.4 ppg
2017: 323.6 ypg / 25.8 ppg

Couple things to consider with Grinch:
- He coached a team that ran the "air raid" offense; thus, his defenses spent a lot of time on the field, and given the nature of their offense, were in a lot of shootouts.
- The PPG is pretty impressive given the above.
- The YPG this year is outstanding.
- His defenses forced a lot of turnovers. Part of that, again, may have been the nature of the games they were in; but, impressive none-the-less
- He did all of this with 2 and 3 star recruits.

Bottom line, when judging young coaches coming from lesser programs, it's wise to consider the talent available to them, and look deeper than the surface statistics...or just one friggin' meaningless bowl game against a pretty strong program.
