Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

I wonder if it's a coincidence that Withers, Ash, Schiano & and now Grinch are all primarily secondary coaches or if that expertise is something Urban feels helps a defensive coordinator.

I think this is clear succession plan for Greg, that’s all. Seeing that Schiano is being targeted for some NFL openings... my guess is that this is just getting prepared for the inevitable.

This may be the next big wave/adjustment we see in college football. Programs and coaching staffs losing coordinators for greener pastures every couple of years, especially at the big schools that can throw $$$$ at multiple assistant coaches/DC's/OC's. We have already seen a huge jump in assistant coach salaries across college football the past few years. With Grinch, they can establish at least some stability at the DC coaching position to use as a strategy to bridge the gap between defecting coordinators. It will also help in recruiting efforts trying to dispel negatively influenced prospects regarding coaching change rumors.

ALEX GRINCH'S ROLE SHOULD BE SIGNIFICANT, BUT OHIO STATE'S DEFENSIVE COACHING STRUCTURE FOR 2018 REMAINS UNCERTAIN

90133_h.jpg

While Ohio State officially announced the hiring of former Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch on Monday, it remains uncertain exactly what Grinch’s role will be.

Although Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman reported last week that Grinch would be a co-defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes, Ohio State said Monday that Grinch’s "specific responsibilities will be announced at a later date."

That leaves it unclear not only what role Grinch will play on Ohio State’s coaching staff this year, but how his addition could impact the roles of Ohio State’s other defensive assistant coaches.

It is presumable that Grinch’s role will be significant. While it’s easy to guess why Grinch decided to make the move to Ohio State – he grew up in Columbus suburb Grove City, and his wife is from Ohio as well – it’s also unlikely that Grinch, who was a Broyles Award semifinalist this past season as one of college football’s top assistant coaches, would have left a Power 5 defensive coordinator post to be the low man on the totem pole for the Buckeyes.

That makes it more than believable that Grinch’s position in Columbus will come with co-defensive coordinator duties, while the 37-year-old rising star will also likely be positioned as the defensive-coordinator-in-waiting to take over if Greg Schiano leaves Ohio State for a head coaching opportunity.

Given Grinch’s background of being either a safeties or defensive backs coach in every one of his previous full-time coaching stops, it also seems a likely possibility that Grinch could take over Schiano’s current position coaching responsibility as safeties coach.

The question isn’t whether the Buckeyes will have a significant role for Grinch to take, because they surely will; it’s how that role could change the responsibilities of the other coaches on Ohio State’s staff.

NEW OHIO STATE ASSISTANT COACH ALEX GRINCH TO MAKE $800,000 IN 2018 AS PART OF TWO-YEAR DEAL

90152_h.jpg

New Ohio State football assistant coach Alex Grinch is set to make $800,000 in 2018 as part of a two-year deal, according to a term sheet signed by Grinch and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith this week, obtained by Eleven Warriors through a public records request.

Grinch's contract, which has not yet been finalized, will run through Jan. 31, 2020. He will be eligible for a compensation increase, at an amount that has also not yet been finalized, for the 2019 season.

The term sheet does not indicate what Grinch's specific coaching responsibilities will be.

Should Ohio State win a Big Ten East title over the next two years, Grinch would receive a bonus of 8.5 percent of his base salary. Should Ohio State win a Big Ten Championship Game over the next two years, Grinch will receive an additional bonus of 4.25 percent. Grinch will receive a 21.25 percent bonus if Ohio State makes the College Football Playoff semifinals, while that bonus would increase to 25.5 percent if the Buckeyes make the national championship game.

Grinch will also receive a stipend of $600 per month to cover automobile costs, six football season tickets and two men's basketball season tickets.

Urban Meyer Watched Alex Grinch Throughout 2017 Season

Alex-Grinch-FootballScoop.jpg

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer always keeps a running list of possible assistant coaching hires because he knows that his current assistant coaches aren’t going to stick around forever.

When the NCAA announced last year that a 10th assistant coach was going to be permitted, Meyer had to decide how he was going to use that new slot. With five assistants on offense and only four on defense, he saw it as an opportunity to even up the sides a bit. Pretty soon after that, he began to zero in on Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

“I started studying Alex back in the summertime,” Meyer said last week. “You always try to have an on-call. We found out that we were going to be able to add a 10th position. And I believe that he should probably have, like most, I imagine are going to have five each, five offense, five defense, and I wanted to add someone on defense. I wanted to have a high — I need high-energy guys in our program. When you start losing guys like Luke Fickell and Kerry Coombs, who are energy, energy people, great recruiters, great people, they get their units to perform, he fit that mold.

“And then what he did at Washington State, I think was outstanding. I really studied him throughout the year. I checked their scores all the time, I checked they’re statistics, I’ve been watching film on him. Then on top of that, he’s an Ohio guy that wanted to be here. The minute we offered him the job, he had a handful of job offers right on top of it. Obviously he picked the right one.”

Grinch’s performance in turning a traditionally defensively-indifferent Washington State program into one that became very productive defensively impressed Meyer. The Cougar defense hadn’t held opponents under 30 points per game since the 2006 season, and yet upon Grinch’s arrival in 2015, Washington State was able to hold opponents under 30 points per game in each of his three seasons. He also helped to triple the number of turnovers forced per season from the year before he arrived.

The season before he arrived, Washington State had the No. 97 defense in the nation. They finished with the No. 16 defense this past season. They were No. 7 in pass efficiency defense, No. 9 in turnovers forced (28), and No. 5 in fewest touchdown passes allowed (11).

A native of Central Ohio, Grinch’s background didn’t hurt either.

“Huge part of it,” Meyer said. “Yeah, he played at Mount Union, which I have great respect for all those guys that come from that program, they’re usually excellent football people. And him and his wife — his wife is from Alliance, Ohio and he’s from right down the street, so, yeah, that was a perfect fit.”
