Amaechi - Hardaway (Merged)

First off let me, I don't understand how you can hate anyone...

You may dislike them, or not agree with their actions, but to hate is just a terrible thing...

I have no problem with gay people. If that is what they like than that is what they like. I just don't like that personally...

I think Hardaway was looking for a little media time for whatever reason, b/c it isnt like anyone has heard from him since he retired form the league...

On the showering with teammates I think it is something that you just become accustomed to, and hell I have seen some horseplaying and stuff of that nature in the shower...

I think the whole phobia of shower comes from things you hear from prison about don't drop the soap and stuff like that, but we all know teammates arent going to pull some shit like that...

I have had a gay guy hit on me b4 and I kinda felt ackward afterwards, but is it really any different than having an ugly girl hit on you...You feel ackward b/c some of your thoughts when someone is hitting on you are sexual thoughts and the thought of a guy sexually is just not comforting to some...

That's a very good analogy. I've never been hit on by a gay guy because I'm too ugly. But I'm certain it would make me feel uncomfortable and flattered at the same time - just as if some ugly girl hit on me.

Amaechi Blasts Hardaway Attack
16th February, 2007 - 7:00 am

Toronto Star -
Former NBA centre John Amaechi, who disclosed his homosexuality last week, said anti-gay comments by another retired player ``demonstrate the need to continue the conversation."

Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a radio show Wednesday that he hates gay people, then later apologized for his remarks.

"I don't need Tim's comments to realize there's a problem," Amaechi said in a phone interview yesterday. "People said that I should just shut up and go away ? now they have to rethink that."

Hardaway's comments were sparked by Amaechi's decision to come out of the closet.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," Hardaway said. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

Hardaway also said if he did find out that a teammate was gay, he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.

"His words pollute the atmosphere," Amaechi said. "It creates an atmosphere that allows young gays and lesbians to be harassed in school, creates an atmosphere where in 33 states you can lose your job and where anti-gay and lesbian issues are used for political gain," Amaechi said.

I don't read that as Amaechi "blasting" Hardaway.

Actually think he's taken the high road on this.

NBA Banishes Hardaway From All-Star Weekend

16th February, 2007 - 1:52 am

AP -

The NBA banished Tim Hardaway from All-Star weekend in Las Vegas because of his anti-gay remarks.

Hardaway, who played in five All-Star games during the 1990s, was already in Las Vegas to make a series of public appearances this week on behalf of the league. But after Hardaway said, "I hate gay people" during a radio interview, commissioner David Stern stepped in.

"We removed him from representing us because we didn't think his comments were consistent with having anything to do with us," Stern told reporters Thursday at the opening of a fan festival at a Las Vegas casino, part of the NBA's All-Star weekend.

I don't hate gay people. I was taught hate the sin, not the person. I think what they do is completely wrong, and it does freak me out to see two dudes smacking lips...blech.

I don't feel comfortable around them, and that is my right. I shouldn't be forced to like what they do, accept them, or anything else. I'll never change my beliefs that what they do - they choose to do, and that it is wrong.

I figure in due time - they will be judged, and it certainly won't be me doing the judging. "you gotz lot of 'splainin ta do"

As far as the whole showering thing - unless I can shower with chicks - I don't want gay guys showering with me. Fair enough eh?

My guess is that if he had a child that was a homosexual, that he would not "hate" them.

True enough. I've talked this point over with my better half - no consensus. I don't know how I would feel if my son said "hey dad, I'm gay".

I don't think you can hate your own son/daughter can you? Well maybe if they would turn into Charles Manson or something...dunno.

I pray I don't end up in that situation.

Interesting Point From SI

How should the NBA respond to Tim Hardaway's admittedly homophobic diatribe against gay players?
(a) Yell at him
(b) Counsel him
(c) Thank him
(d) All of the above

ANSWER: (d) ... But above all else, Hardaway should be thanked. His ignorance has enlightened the NBA.
Who knows how many current players share his point of view? Someday an active player is going to be outed, and all of his teammates will be asked about it. When that day arrives, does the NBA want to be defined by the comments of the next Tim Hardaway?
The outing of former player John Amaechi has given the NBA an opportunity to become a leader on this issue. It is not going to be enough to briefly discuss sexual orientation among the long list of topics covered each year at training camp. As the most progressive commissioner in sports, David Stern should be running a league that is especially sensitive to issues of prejudice.
The majority of NBA players have been victims of -- or seen teammates victimized by -- bigotry. By equating sexual prejudice to racial prejudice, the message becomes simple: Treat others as you wish to be treated.

Hardaway was foolish to make the hateful remarks but I wonder about one statement he did make that has not gained so much attention.

Is he wrong to not want gay men ogling his naked body in the locker room? I mean, I don't know about you guys, but I am sick of women ogling me as I walk down the street and treating me like a sex object. I want to be appreciated for who I am, not how I look. I wouldn't want a bunch of women sitting in a locker room fondling me with their eyes. Is there a difference here?

What say you?
