And I thought the Yanks would sign a good pitcher

'Tastic: "At least Im not the only one that thinks this...."

The Yankees (right or wrong) have had a fixation and an intention of signing Wright since mid-season. This is not a whimsical thing. The Yankees wanted this for a long time, so this is not a "change of plans" in any way. Wright's post-season flame-out against the 'Stros obviously didn't do anything to sway them.

If you follow the Yankees closely, you'd know that there are certain guys that the front office have been fixated on over the years. Some have signed, and others haven't. Some have been great, and others have busted. Jason Schmidt (before he was good) and Brian Giles are two guys that fall into the "Yankee lust" category for a long time.

People want to disregard this, but the Yankees need INNINGS in the worst way. Older pitchers (no matter how good or great they are), don't give you that: Mussina, Brown, & El Duque are six Inning pitchers now. They may be good, but they also burn out a bullpen. Quantrill was useless by the end of the season last year, and Gordon/Mo aren't spring chickens anymore. Wright is 29, and Lieber is 33. I see the logic behind this move.

BTW, there are also reports out today that the Yankees grapevine is saying that they are very close to signing Pavano (4 years at $40 million), and Carlos Beltran. The Yanks won't go after a big-time 1B: Delgado or Sexson, if they sign Beltran. If things go as planned, they're looking to bring the BamTino back, and Olderud too. If they don't, then they're looking at the big slugger options.

However, I would be wary of it: I think Delgado's a former juice user who's on the decline.

Sloopy....yes, I know how they get fixated on players......who knows why. I hoping for the best with Wright. Hopefully Stotts can get him on the right track. I do agree.....they need to get younger arms out there.

I heard Pavano was close....never heard that they were anywhere near signing Beltran (which would be huge). I heard about Tino coming back, but Olerud will not, they have already announced that. Plus we are still stuck with Giambi.

'Tastic: "I heard Pavano was close....never heard that they were anywhere near signing Beltran (which would be huge)."

Pavano (I think) has become a priority for them. I think a lot of that has to do with Boston. The Yankees definately don't want him going there and having to face a Schilling-Martinez-Pavano-Arroyo rotation in the post-season. That wouldn't be a good thing.

And the Yankees are opening talks with Boras regarding Beltran at the Winter Meetings next week. The Yanks and Angels are the early favorites, with him expecting to sign late (sometime in January).

"but Olerud will not, they have already announced that."

They offered Olerud arbitration. They'd like to keep him. I don't know where you heard that announcement, because its not correct.

"Plus we are still stuck with Giambi."

The Yankees are currently doing their legal legwork on making a case to cancel Giambi's contract. Joe Torre said that he (quote, unquote), "was unable to comment on Giambi at this time" at a function/dinner in New Jersey yesterday. That normally would indicate that legal proceedings are a-comin'. I think that they're going to attack the "Player must keep himself in optimal physical shape" clause in the contract.

Either that, or the Yankees will buy him out at 60 cents on the dollar, which is still about $50.4 million dollars. A huge price tag.

Pedro is actually screwing up their chances with Pavano. They are waiting to see what he does with their offer. My guess would be Boston is going to lose out on Pavano. Crazy enough I hear the main competition for him might be Detroit or Seattle.

As far as Olerud, no...they did not offer him arbitration. Where did you see they did???

"Cairo was one of seven players that did not receive arbitration offers from the Yankees, joining first basemen John Olerud, Tony Clark and Travis Lee, utility infielder Enrique Wilson, right-hander Esteban Loaiza and left-hander C.J. Nitkowski."

With Giambust, I hope they get out of his contract....that would free up a lot of cash and open up a lot more options at first base.....or to throw at Beltran.

'Tastic: "Regardless, they should toss as much as it takes to get Beltran"

I think the chances of George signing Beltran went way up after last night. Beltran's other biggest suitor (the Angels) probably bowed out of the Beltran sweepstakes with the Steve Finley signing.
