Andrew Luck (Official Thread)

Sorry, Doug. Stealing 3 classmates' credit cards and using them to buy shit is worse. Oh, and weren't you also called up before the honor code committee 3 months before that and accused of plagiarism? So maybe, just maybe, get off your high fucking horse and blow it out your ass, you sanctimonious twat.

EDIT -- Dougie is getting raked across the coals on Twitter already. Isn't that just a shame.

That 31 year old QB is better than 1/2 the guys out there right now. And yes, that is AFTER 5 years...
Disagree. Personally I thought his run at SF was largely due to a style of play that the NFL ultimately adapted to. Was never impressed with accuracy.

I like the guy A LOT more because of his stance and his resolve. Not much of a fan of his actual QB play.

What, out of curiosity, do you have to base that on?

Maybe I should restate my case. I believe that the guy should be given at least one more chance to play. Out of all the QBs signed right now, none of them have won two NFC championships and been to the Super Bowl. Case Keenam was the closest (got pounded by the Eagles in the NFC Championship game), but other than that....pfft.

Here's a list of QBs signed since Kap became a FA (hint: it's not a who's who list of QBs):

Mind you - that list isn't the most updated, but since then, Bruce Arians (who I love as an offensive minded coach) has signed this cat:

As others have said, his ship has long sailed. He sued the league, kinda hard to get a job from an employer you sue. Again, I went from thinking the guy was an overrated guy who needed to sit on the bench to thinking I really like this guy for taking a stand on something he believes in and being willing to sacrifice his career for it. I like the guy a lot, which is saying something since I used to enjoy trashing him. But I don't really have any interest in seeing him play football anymore - I'm more interested in what he can do in other, more important capacities.

There's no doubt that he should get a chance based on nothing more than that if he is what he was or close to it he's definitely better than some of the crap that has jobs. What is unclear to me is whether he actually wants another chance and is being blackballed or whether he'd rather find more power and influence in being a martyr and not really pursue opportunities. I also think that a legitimate fear that some teams have is that he's not really serious about football anymore but if you work him out and realize that and don't sign him then you'll be criticized for giving a "sham" tryout.

Nicely said, Jagdaddy. There also are issues of power dynamics and oppression that he, and many others who share his viewpoints, could perceive in an attempt to go back into training to make himself ready to play.

The dynamics of the sports industry--the booing of Andrew Luck an indicator of note--suggest to me that this is a game that could even disappear unless issues of player safety and the like are addressed. Add to that the insane amounts people get paid to play the sport. Not a happy time ahead if you are an NFL owner.

I definitely think the game will disappear, or be dramatically changed, within a generation or two. The simple fact that a lot of parents won't let their kids play will be a huge factor. I also strongly suspect that at some point it will become a top priority of a safety-first group which will use publicity/shaming/scare campaigns and litigation and threats thereof against pee wee leagues and middle and high schools to basically eliminate it from the grassroots.

As long as football can be a poor kids ticket, there will still be players. But, the divide between those players and the middle class (White) consumers will widen, such as it has with the NBA. The difference will be that parents generally don’t steer their kids away from basketball for safety reasons. So, the question will be, does it go like the NBA, which still has a healthy audience, or does it go more like boxing, which has all but dropped off the face of the earth to the casual fan. Time will tell.

Also, don’t underestimate the impact of fantasy football and gambling.
