Wiggins: Basketball's best amateur?
Eric Prisbell, USA TODAY

October 24. 2012 - HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Inside a cramped, dilapidated community center hidden at the end of a dark parking lot, Andrew Wiggins starts bouncing a basketball. Children scramble, and uninterested adults chatter about the night's presidential debate and how one-time phenom O.J. Mayo built his rep here.

They don't know that North Carolina Coach Roy Williams is a day away from boarding a private plane just to meet with Wiggins.

Wiggins starts attacking the well-worn basket. And he starts shooting, swishing one half-court shot after another. Conversations stop. Heads turn. Eyebrows raise. One slack-jawed man, Joseph Jones, sprints out of the gym to fetch a $20 bill. He rushes back, interrupts Wiggins mid-dribble and implores the 17-year-old to sign it.

"Just remember me in the NBA!" Jones hollers as Wiggins autographs it. "All I want is a beat-up Honda!"

Wiggins doesn't crack a smile. Basketball comes easy for the Huntington Prep junior, a Canadian-born-and-raised small forward widely considered the world's best amateur. Decisions ? ones that could determine the narrative of the 2013-14 college basketball season ? are the hard part.

Wiggins' pending decision about whether to reclassify as a high school senior, which would enable Wiggins to play college basketball next season and presumably enter the 2014 NBA draft, is among the most intriguing questions of the college basketball season and is weighing on the shoulders of the 6-foot-8 (and still growing), cherub-faced teenager.

He is being recruited by Kentucky and Florida State, his parents' alma mater, North Carolina visited Tuesday, and Ohio State and Kansas are scheduled to visit this week as well.

"It is a lot on him," his girlfriend, Mychal Johnson, told USA TODAY Sports. "We talk about it sometimes, but he doesn't like talking about it. That's how bad it stresses him out. Sometimes he doesn't know what to do."

The son of Mitchell Wiggins, who played NBA and overseas, and Marita Payne-Wiggins, who won two Olympic track-and-field silver medals for Canada in 1984, Andrew Wiggins knows he hit the genetic jackpot. He also knows he is caught between two different worlds, striving for professional greatness while cherishing fleeting moments of whatever normalcy his life still maintains.

Wiggins and a teammate live with a host family ? Scott and Lesley Thomas and sons Luke, 13, and Clayton, 10 ? in a five-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot home in the quiet neighborhood of Proctorville, Ohio, located just across the Ohio River.

Ohio State and Syracuse are also on Wiggins?s radar.

?Ohio State was set to come down last week,? Fulford said. ?The guys had a field trip so they weren?t in, so I think [assistant coach] Chris Jent was going to try and reschedule this week.?

Andrew Wiggins in Class of 2013
Updated: October 25, 2012
By Dave Telep | ESPN RecruitingNation

Andrew Wiggins, the nation's top basketball player in the Class of 2014, is reclassifying into his original 2013 class.

The move by Wiggins, a Thornhill, Ontario native, comes with a new ranking -- No. 1 prospect in the senior class.

Huntington (W. Va.) Prep coach Rob Fulford confirmed that Wiggins and his family decided Thursday to announce the decision. The 6-foot-7 small forward was the best prospect at last summer's LeBron James Skills Academy and was the clear-cut choice for the top spot in 2014.

Wiggins moving to No. 1 in 2013 means senior small forward Jabari Parker of Chicago Simeon moves to the No. 2 slot. Parker, a three-time Illinois state champion and two-time USA Basketball gold medalist, is one of the strongest No. 2 overall players ever in the ESPN 100.

Wiggins, an athletic specimen whose father played at Florida State, is strongly considering the Seminoles and Kentucky. North Carolina coach Roy Williams visited his school this week, and Ohio State and Kansas are expected to be at Huntington Prep this week.

I'm not sure why we aren't all over this guy with the full court press but he's a phenomenal athlete and would most likely contribute immediately as he seems like a pretty good defensive guy. The hops?!?!?! Gracious. He and Sam on the court together would be disgusting in a really good way.

We are in his top 5 according to the link above your post. I don't know what else Matta can do but recruit the h out of him. He will sign late so there is hope.

This is probably the best recruit since LeBron.
I am at a loss of what to say. That means this kid will be the #1 draft pick after one year of college ball and you are leaving out a lot of good players. After listening to the entire video you may be correct but even Biancardi says the best perimeter player which knocks out a lot of guys I was thinking about.

Kid is the real deal. Put it this way, he was a 2014 kid who re-classified and instantly became the #1 ranked kid in 2013.

Kid has unlimited potential and will be a dominant player wherever he lands.

He was the consensus #1 recruit as a sophomore regardless of class last year. I've seen him play, it's ridiculous.
