any guitar players here?

So, it sounds like a fair number of us here play guitar- is anybody in a band? If so, what type of music do you play, and do you actually get out and perform?

I'm not in a band, but I'd kind of like to do that again.

I'm in a band, if you can call it that.. it's really just 3 other guys I work with and me. We don't even have a drummer (Nutty won't return my calls. :p). Anyway, we write our own stuff just for kicks. Have about 15 - 20 songs. Some of them aren't half bad, actually.

We cover the Stones a lot.... But, we pretty much play anything from Blondie (One way or another) to Rose Tattoo (Rock n' roll outlaw) to John Mellencamp (Scarecrow) to Oaisis (Wonderwall)...

Not me. There was a time when I was pretty decent at sweep picking, but man, does it take a lot of practice.

How did you learn? I have tried in the past, but didnt have the patience...
That, and not knowing any good songs that employ the technique that I can play along too doesnt help

DEBuckeye, mostly rock for me, Metallica mainly :)

Well, I was lucky for a few different reasons. When I started playing, two of my buddies also started. We sat in on each other's guitar lessons, shared all our Guitar mags, taught each other what we learned etc. I guess the best way to learn is to get some of the videos that are out there or look for lessons "on demand" on your cable TV. The key is to start slowly, making sure you're hitting each note without having the previous note ring (as a chord would). Find a pattern that is easy for the fretboard hand and work the timing with the sweeping hand. Practice, practice, practice...

Here's a pretty easy pattern (sorry for my ugly paint skills  ). Sweep down, then hammer-on and pull-off and sweep back up...Use your pick hand to keep the strings muffled a little...You can move this pattern anywhere on the neck (this pic shows 1st position, best I could find)...

I've found TONS of guitar forums out on the internet, and most of them have sections of lessons, tips, tricks, etc. As far as the basics go, I've seen quite a few things that are helpful- picking exercises, chord progressions, how to cover solos, etc.

I don't have any links at the moment, but just search for "guitar forum" and you'll find them.

WooHoo!! Just came into a little extra cash and I've decided it's time for a new geetar...It's going to be one of the two Les Paul Classics I posted below. The first is a Honey Burst and it is already in the store (it's actually a little lighter color than this picture). I've played it and it's a beauty. The second is a Vintage burst and the store has told me they will order one and once it arrives, I can decide between the two and pick which one I like best...Not sure how long a process this will be, but I will post pics once the new baby joins my collection...I am getting a very good price after having weaseled them down a little and telling them this will be cash money...I can't wait...
