Anyone Using High Quality Headphones ?

OSU_Buckguy;1896627; said:
no highs? no lows? must be bose.

I would say they're not that bad, especially since I got them for $99. The need to be broken lots more before a final judgement can be reached.

On the surface I would say that the sound probably isn't as good as my Shure in-ear buds, but they are a nice change of pace with the over-the-ear style.

for $99, you can find a lot better than bose. a lot better. the problem is that most of these quality headphones and in-ear phones aren't found in most brick-and-mortar stores.

I got lucky and scored a pair of Grado SR325i on eBay for a stupid low price about a year back and am ridiculously happy with them.

They replaced a pair of SR80 that I had previously.

Got the Grado 325is about a week ago. I'm giddy over these things. This is my first pair of Grado's. Guitars sound so amazing. They sound like having a vintage Marshall amp stuck to each ear.

Got a pair of Grado s60i headphones a few weeks ago. I've been using earbuds and cheap Nike wrap-arounds for years and it's amazing how much I've missed out by using crappy headphones. I stayed up until 3am last week listening to music, which I haven't done since high school. They were more than I ever wanted to spend on headphones, but they're worth every penny.

Head-Direct RE0's are my buds: http://www.head-direct.com/product_detail.php?p=38

Tough to beat for $79.00, in my opinion.
i picked up the re0's a few months ago. they're outstanding for the price... or 2x the price. the bass leaves a little wanting, but the clarity is well beyond the price point.

i also picked up some yuin g2a's, which i use when i'm working out. i don't like wearing earbuds, as they get sweaty and pop out. the yuins produce wonderfully warm and clear sound at a good price ($50). the koss ksc-75 is still the standard for great sound at an even greater price (about $20). no headphone or earphone will ever provide a better value than those.

if you find the grados to be a bit too bright with not enough bass, which is how they're regarded, i would recommend picking up some flat ear pads: link. this will make the music more warm and the bass more powerful. i use these with my alessandros, which are modded 325i's.

Most electronics, including high quality headphones need plenty of time to "burn in" to reach their best sound. Especially high end headphones. At least 100 hours of music played through them!

I was actually looking for something brighter to compliment my other phones. Brightness isn't a problem for me. I agree about the bass being lighter than I would prefer. When I get accustomed to the sound of these, I might try the flat pads or a simple "mod" or two. For example, some guys at "Head-Fi" claim you can get more bass by putting electrical tape around the outside of the bowls.

yeah, i did this, too. i have a double-layered strip of electrical tape around the bowls.

There are tons of ways to tinker with the pads ...guys trim them to make them thinner, cut holes in the center, replace with radio shack/sennheiser/other (don't recall specific models off the top of my head) pads, roll cotton socks into tubes to use as pads etc etc etc..

And that's not counting the various head strap, transducer, cable & other mods.

To those of yall that have the Grado SR60/80 I have a few questions:

1) how are they for long term use (i've had on ear headphones before and my ears get warm quickly)
2) how hard would it be to mod these for over the ear fitting
3) I work in cube land, I want to make sure my co-worker in the next cube isn't rocking out to my music if you catch my drift.

thanks in advance

1) Grado's are pretty well known for being uncomfortable. I had the SR 325is and any use beyond an hour was painful. The 325's are heavier than the 60/80's so perhaps, the problem wouldn't be as extreme.
2) Check out the "Head-Fi" forum for some ideas on mod's. I used "G cush" pad's to make mine over ear and more comfortable, but it changes the sound signature. (Not necessarily for the better) Here's an extensive thread on Grado mods. http://www.head-fi.org/t/119314/post-your-grado-mods
3) Grado's are "open" headphones so there will be a lot of sound "run-off" that your co-workers will likely hear. You should look into a "closed" head phone or perhaps ear buds for the office. Grado's probably aren't your best choice, given your situation. Try searching "Best closed headphone under $100" (or whatever your price point is) on Head-fi.org. You'll get a lot of ideas. (Probably too many ideas) For ear buds/in ear monitors, here's a great thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/478568/mul...s-compared-vsonic-vc1000-added-09-03-13-p-760
