Anyone Using High Quality Headphones ?

2 songs in... happy so far... The Black Keys - Little Black Submarine & Lonely Boy ... might need to tweak my setup.. during the quiet portions I could still hear my friends pandora (of course he has his [Mark May] jacked all the way up). Need to adjust to the lack of bass "thump"

Gotta be careful with the volume because you can damage your hearing trying to get a bass thump! Phones just won't do that "thump" because that's a physical thing.

Upgrade-itis. I know it well. I went through 4 pairs in a 2 years before I found my end game headphone: HiFiMan HE-400. And, then, you need to find your end game DAC and headphone amplifier.... It's a process, but a fun one.

Buy reference cans and then you gotta get a reference amp.
Then you gotta get reference wires to the amp.
Then, of course you absolutely must have a reference source.
Then you have to take care of your electricity!
I spent $2000 just on cleaning up my electricity!

question.. I'm using winamp for playback (don't laugh but if you know of a better player let me know)... any recommendations on the EQ preset to use to get the best outta the Grados?

I've seen 2 media players recommended more than any others: Foobar2000 and JRiver MediaCenter.

Foobar2000 is free but it requires some patience, effort and some computer savvy to set things up. (More than I have) I've gotten it to work for basic playing, but I've never been able to get cover-art, features and general library management set up like I want.

JRiverMedia Center is $50.00 but it does the set up for you. (At least for the most part). There is a free version (JRiverJukebox), which I used for a while, but I think the pay version is worth the money. It clearly sounds better to me. The free version definitely beats Windows Media player.

A key thing is: You need to find a player that can do "bitperfect" sound. You can do this a few different ways: WASAPI, Kernel Streaming or ASIO. I'm not sure if WinAmp can do it or not.

As for EQ, I typically don't do that, so I'd defer to someone else.

Thanks for info.... only thing i really care about is playback and being able to use hotkeys.. I'm using this at work, don't really have time to see the pretty artwork :biggrin2:

Just received a Schiit Fulla in the mail. Incredible little amp/DAC for under $100.

http://schiit.com/products/fulla
I've been using a Schiit Magni with a pair of Audio Technica M50s for several years now.
I'm also steaming music from the internet and my computer using a Raspberry Pi single board micro computer to a Schiit Bifrost Uber DAC
I'm planning on upgrading the DAC to a better Schiit DAC in the future.
. Schiit makes great bang for the buck products.

Was reading through the history of this thread where I claimed I had found an end game headphone in the HiFman HE-400. I lie. Loved it but sold it. I have 3 others now. Beyerdynamic T1. Fostex TH-600 and Mr. Speakers Alpha Dogs. DAC Yulong D18 and Amp Yulong A18.

Maybe not ‘high quality’, but is anyone using Bluetooth headphones? Any thoughts, comments, recommendations?
Budget is a crucial starting point as there is no limit to the levels of audiophile precision. What are you hoping to spend?

And what is their primary purpose? What is the main type of sound you wish to listen to and in what setting?
