WSJ: Apple's Plan to Kill Cable With iTunes (And the Tablet's Coming in March) - Apple - Gizmodo
The WSJ says that CBS and Disney are seriously considering Apple's plan to kill your cable box with iTunes TV show subscriptions. Oh, and that the Apple tablet thing is coming in March. The WSJ says that Apple's plan for iTunes TV show subscriptions would have you pay a monthly fee for "access to some TV shows from a selection" of major networks, and that CBS and Disney are the two most seriously thinking about it. CBS would apparently offer up shows from both CBS and the CW, like Gossip Girl, while Disney would be offering up shows from ABC, ABC Family and the Disney Channel. What's interesting is that the networks could actually make more money per subscriber than they do from cable companies, with broadcast networks picking up $2-$4 per subscriber, and cable networks grabbing $1-$2. (Which has to piss cable companies off, no doubt why networks are treading carefully around this proposal.) Originally, Apple had floated something more like a traditional cable payment, like paying $30 a month for a big bundle of TV stuff.
Yes please. 4 network stations, ESPN, BTN, 4-5 cable networks.
All of this, of course, would fit into Apple's larger plan to remake the iTunes model with Lala, and Apple hopes to launch the service sometime next year. While the way Apple says songs and TV shows now would stick around according to the Journal, the combination of web-and-streaming-oriented music and TV subscriptions fundamentally changes the way iTunes would work.
Oh, and of course, this is all happening as Apple "finalizes its plans for a tablet device," Apple's trying to launch "by the end of March." Interesting, that's what an analyst heard not too long ago. Killing cable and up-ending the publishing industry in one fell swoop? That's a pretty busy 2010. [WSJ]

Ceton is releasing a cable card tuner in the 1Q of 2010 that will enable your computer to record premium cable on 6 channels at the same time. Hopefully it's more stable than the one I've got and posted about in the USB 2.0 thread

NY Times Source Claims "You Will Be Very Surprised How You Interact With the New Tablet" - apple tablet - Gizmodo

500x_tabletpatn2.jpg

According to the NY Times, a former Apple employee has told them that that "Steve is extremely happy with the new tablet." Guess he might not kill this one then.

I don't even want to speculate what about this tablet makes Steve so happy or about what will be so surprising about interacting with it. I just want to interact with one. Period. [NY Times]

Apple to Host Event in Late January, Possibly (Yeah, Yeah) Tablet-Related - Apple Event - Gizmodo
The Financial Times is reporting that Apple rented out the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, its preferred convention center, for a few days in late January. Does this mean all the tablet rumblings are correct? Likely as not, it means a product announcement. The last time Apple rented out the YBCA, it was for September's iPod event, which while sort of unexciting did see the introduction of the new video-shooting Nano. With the grumblings about Apple cutting deals with cable TV networks, analysts are bound to be going crazy with the thought of the Tablet being announced. Either way, we'll know January 26th, and will keep you updated as invitations and other hints come forth.

Hmmm...I don't know how much I'd trust that particular announcement rumor. Mainly because January is when they regularly announce updates to things like the laptops, iMacs, and sometimes the MacPro. However, with the very recent bump on the iMacs, that is one regular announcement that will more than likely will not be included in their normal January lineup. I have a feeling that a tablet device would be announced in September (iPod/iTouch announcements) or June (iPhone, software, developers stuff).

Apple Orders 10-Inch Tablet Displays Amid iSlate Talk | Cult of Mac

Apple’s tablet, initially just a whisp of rumor, appears to be taking a more concrete shape. The Cupertino, Calif. company has instructed suppliers to provide glass panels and connectors ahead of a potential Jan. 26 announcement, multiple reports claim.
A subsidiary of Foxconn, Innolux, will supply Apple with the majority of 10-inch glass displays and Wintek, which provides most iPhone display panels, will handle the remainder, according to Taiwan’s DigiTimes. The publication said Apple could announce its tablet in January with major shipments by March, 2010. One report has suggested Apple has told Foxconn it needs 300,000 tablets per month. If true, the report would dovetail with recent speculation Apple booked San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Jan. 26 for a product announcement.

$800-1000 speculation seems way too high to me. This is essentially a 10" touchscreen netbook, or an iPod Touch XL.

If it's all solid state they've got to shoot for $400-500 maximum. At that price, they could really cut into Kindle. Any higher and it's too niche.

Regardless, without eInk it's not going to spell doom for eReaders as a whole.
