Archie Miller (Former HC Indiana Hoosiers)

I don't think Archie Miller is necessarily a home run hire, though he's a very good coach. With the kind of money Gene Smith can throw at Matta's replacement, we can legitimately target guys like Jay Wright, Chris Collins, Frank Martin, Gregg Marshall and Dana Altman. Plus among the up-and-comers, Bryce Drew, Matt Lottich (Vanderbilt) and Larry Krystkowiak.

This is not the end of the world.

Heard Miller on the radio yesterday and it annoyed me. Not so much that he isn't coaching tOSU, but that now he's going to be coaching against us for years at IU.

Can't blame him for taking it, though. I'd take that job and I'm an OSU alum. Besides, after a couple of seasons and a few million dollars I'd set their program back for the next 20 years.

Lunardi deserves to be called out for preferential treatment of teams in weak conferences. Just because you pile up wins in the SWAC or Sun Belt doesn't mean you're more deserving than a 9-11 team from the best conference in college basketball. The minnows Joe advocates for would fail miserably in the toughest league in college. His job is to seed the auto bids and best at-large teams, not lobby for low- and mid-majors. Joe has gone way overboard this season.

Indiana basketball fires coach Archie Miller after four middling seasons

After four years spent struggling to break into the top half of the Big Ten, IU has fired men’s basketball coach Archie Miller.

Miller finishes his IU career with a 67-58 record. He went 33-44 in Big Ten play.

“As the Director of Athletics, I wanted to wait until the conclusion of the season before evaluating the leadership of our men’s basketball program," IU AD Scott Dolson said in a news release announcing Miller's firing. "In the days following the completion of our season in the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament, I have spent a great deal of time evaluating our recruiting, student-athlete development, leadership development, and playing philosophy and strategy. That review, combined with the on-court results, ultimately led me to conclude that a change in leadership of our program is warranted at this time. I shared my assessment with Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, and he accepted my recommendation."

Ouch. I guess IU has BTN money to burn.

Indiana fires Miller, raises private money to cover buyout

Archie Miller’s $10.3 million buyout was one of college basketball’s priciest.

Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson decided keeping Miller would prove even more costly.

Dolson fired Miller on Monday, armed with enough cash from private donations to cover the buyout and ready to answer a fan base angered by four straight mediocre seasons.

“It’s a results-oriented business and I didn’t feel like we had made enough progress,” Dolson said on a late afternoon Zoom call. “I thought we needed a new voice and a new direction.”

By making the decision before April 2022, Indiana was on the hook for the $10.3 million. If Dolson had waited another year, the cost would have dropped to $3.5 million.
