Atlanta Braves (4x World Series Champions)

What do you all think of Chipper Jones' outburst toward the umpires when he said......

"The first pitch to me with the bases loaded was in my batter's box, inside," Jones told reporters after the game. "Now you tell me how I'm supposed to hit that. We have to get Questec here in this ballpark. We've got to. Umpires have got to be held accountable. That's Little League World Series stuff right there."

"It's a joke," Jones said. "I'm tired of it. And baseball can fine me whatever they want. I do not care. Somebody's got to say something. I've got more walks than strikeouts in my career -- I know what a strike looks like."

"You're going to see frustration from now on as long as the officiating is abysmal," Chipper Jones said. "Major League Baseball ought to be ashamed. It's abysmal. It's awful. Not all of them but some of them. It's awful."

I think Chipper Jones is a joke. Crying about balls and strikes like that? How many ball 4's did he take that might've or should've been called strikes? It's a double edged sword. So Chipper wants Questec, heh? Does he realize that Questec calls some pitches strikes that catchers catch in the dirt? Does he realize that one of the pitches he whined about that was below his belt would go higher in Questec? Questec calls 2 ball lengths above the belt. Chipper needs to shut his trap.

Did you see the pitches he's complaining about?
Yes. While one or two might've been off the plate a tad, one he rolled his eyes over was below his belt right down the middle of the plate. For a pitch here or there to be off the plate, he of all people have no right to complain. Afterall, it was Maddux and Glavine that took advantage all those years of the generous strike zones.

None of the pitches were even close, and to call 2 of them a tad off is a gross understatement......I understand your point about playing w/ Maddux and Glavine for so long, but Questec was brought in to create a consistent strike-zone and get away from giving strikes to pitchers based on reputation

I think the thing that drives players crazy, including Chipper, is you go to the plate thinking you know what the strike-zone is and 1/3 of the umpires have a different zone, or are inconsistent w/ their zone

If it were still 95' I don't thonk you'd hear Chipper bitching, just that MLB has made such a huge point to clean-up the strike-zone and this jackass was calling strikes on pitches that moved him off the plate and forced him to swing at pitches well out of the zone

Lots of hype for this 20 year old in Atlanta, including comparisons to Albert Pujols. Time will tell if he's all that, but he just took Carlos Zambrano yard for a three run jack in his first at bat.

I would say yes... or should I say he better... he is on two of my fantasy baseball teams

Looks pretty legit to me. Everything I've heard about him from people who know a good deal about baseball says that he's going to be great.

He seems like a good dude too from what I've seen/heard.

For those that glutton for punishment. A reminder that Jason Heyward was drafted #14 in 2007. The #13 pick? Beau Mills :smash: Gawd the Indians don't know how to draft anymore!!!

I couldn't manage 2 fantasy teams if my life depended on it...I can barely manage 1...

But Jason is my fixture piece. I have a feeling that he's going to be a major player for the Braves this year. His bat alone allows for the lineup to be extended past the 5 spot in terms of actual hitting threats. The braves lineup this year has essentially a 1-7 that's capable of 60+ RBI's a piece.

I don't think he will be the second coming of Pujols...but I do think he will lay his own legacy. Braves fans haven't been this excited about a single player since Chipper back in the early 90's.

They let him catch the opening day pitch from Henry Aaron...

The day they announced him to be the starting RF they sold 3000 more tickets for opening day...

The kid's gonna be a big deal...I'm just happy it's with Atlanta...

This kid will be a factor in the Braves lineup this season without a doubt. Whether that is a consistent, positive factor remains to be seen. Heyward has the talent, just not the experience of playing the highest level of baseball for 162 games. I think he can handle it, but I think it may take some time.

The bomb he hit in his first at bat was incredible. He was going yard in that at bat no matter what. What amazed me was how well he took in all 50,000+ going apeshit for him. He blasts the ball to the bullpen in right center, trots around the bases, high fives on his way to the dugout, and sits down like he just grounded out to SS. Dude has composure, but he is still 20 years old. There will be ups and downs this season. However, the Braves lineup is solid this year, which will really help him as a rookie. The Pujols comparisons are ridiculous. The more appropriate analogy would be Andruw Jones, and he was the real deal for the Braves. As of right now, one game into the season, I have no doubts that Heyward is the real deal; and it will only help when he has the veteran savvy.

Seems like a good time to remind folks that the Braves essentially ignored the entire "Moneyball" craze in baseball.

The premise was that since you have limited resources and a budget that will not let you exceed 90 million dollars, make the most of your team by finding players who have excellent statistical averages in key areas.

Atlanta said "the hell" with that and decided instead to focusing all their scouting resources on SE United States (HS and College players) and the Carribbean. That's it, they won't send scouts anywhere else.

To hear Schuerholz talk about about it - it allows you to find value in players that are often overlooked while other teams have their scouts all over America. Yunel Escobar (5 RBI's on opening day) is a prime example of this, as soon as we got him out of Cuba
