The amazing part of this image is being able to see the areas that are technologically advanced and those still living a pre-Edison lifestyle. Note South Korea damn near appears to be an island, as North Korea essentially has no power to the masses.
Africa looks pretty dark too.

I have a 2'x4' map of this on my wall in my office from National Geographic. The difference between the two is even more pronounced in the print version, where Pyongyang is the only identifiable spot of light, and it's maybe a tenth the size of Seoul. That's just sad.

Another interesting thing about that pic is the American eastern seaboard, where from Washington D.C. up to Boston looks like one enormous city. That's nearly 450 miles of solid city, according to those lights.
