B-Ball NCAA Investigation

Bucktastic

Troy Smith for HEISMAN
According to the Columbus Dispatch, developments in the NCAA investigation of OSU's basketball program are expected to be discussed during a press conference at the university today.

Not sure what time the pres conf. is....

I'm sorry.. why isn't this a bigger deal? I mean we all knew sanctions were coming, but we can't even make the postseason this year, and I figured people would want to talk about it.

I feel for Stockman as a Senior, and if further penalties are imposed, that really sucks for TDials, Sullinger, and other juniors. What a shame. The NCAA should be punishing Obie, and making it so he can't get another job. He's the one that violated rules here (even if he was morally in the right). I don't like this policy of punishing eople that had nothing to do with it.

EDIT: I realize the penalties are self-imposed, but let's not kid ourselves into not realizing that these penalties are pre-emptory because the university knows they're coming later from the NCAA

From the official site. :(

Quotes From Head Coach Thad Matta

Matta reacts to the self-imposed sanction in response to violations of NCAA rules.

Head coach Thad Matta and the Buckeyes will not be eligible for post-season play following the 2004-05 regular season.

Dec. 9, 2004

Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
"Obviously there's not a whole lot to say. I knew coming in there were going to be issues and problems. I am 100 percent with Ohio State in this decision. The shame is that the players had nothing to do with it. They are being penalized for a crime they didn't commit. That is part of life. That is part of how things go."

"Ohio State has my support in this. It is unfortunate but it is something that is hard for our guys to understand. It's one of those things that our team will have to get through. The season is definitely not over."

"The hardest thing for me, and for my staff, is that we fell in love with this team. They have done everything we have asked and have worked extremely hard. They are the most coachable team I have ever had. Giving them the news was tough but now we will rally and continue to compete with great intensions. We are going to be the best basketball team we can have this year every time that we step onto the court. That is not going to change."

"It's difficult. We knew something was going to happen, we just didn't know what or when. The seniors - Brandon (Fuss-Cheatham), Tony (Stockman) and Matt (Marinchick) - are the ones who got hit the hardest in my opinion. Everyone is a little bit confused as 18-22 year-olds might be when they didn't do anything wrong. But they are very mature.

"This affects the team. We will not let it affect the future of Ohio State basketball."

Well, Stadium is right, we might not even be post-season eligible this year. Does that mean we can't play in the Big 10 tourney, or only the NCAA and NIT tourneys?

I'd hate to see us get banned from the post-season for more than a year, though...I don't think that would be fair.

Uh, these are indeed preemptive, to prevent otherwise harsher punishment later from the NCAA. You don't think that the NCAA would drill us to the wall if we didn't take these measures ourselves?

None of this is fucking fair. What point is there in punishing this team? None of the fucking "violations" O'Brien committed have ANYTHING to do with this team or these coaches. FUCK Geiger, FUCK the NCAAssholes. Complete and total horseshit.
