Alvarez expected to step aside as coach WSJ

UW Athletic Department officials have called a news conference for 1 p.m. today to address the dual-role status of football coach and athletic director Barry Alvarez.

Sources indicated Alvarez will relinquish his job as the Badgers' coach to become full-time athletic director at UW. He is expected to outline a timetable for his transition to that role, but it was unclear whether he will name his successor as coach or when he will step down.

Defensive coordinator Bret Bielema and co-offensive coordinator Paul Chryst are the top on-staff candidates to replace Alvarez as football coach.

Sources said Alvarez and his family will be in attendance at today's news conference.

This could be a big blow to the Badgers. Possibly taking them back to the days of irrelevancy. Hopefully they can find a quality replacement. I love having the Big Ten as competitive as it's been over the past few years.

He is only 58, which is relatively young for a FB coach. If there were something hiding in the weeds they wouldn't be keeping him as AD. That dual role has to be incredibly time consuming. Maybe he is just wore out - and it would be a step back to give up the AD role.

Hate to see it. I would prefer we have a strong coach at every school in the Big Ten (except Michigan of course - let's keep LLLoyd there).

It's got to be difficult holding both the coach and AD jobs at a big school these days. I hope to hell that JT never sets his sights on the AD job.

I never knew how he could handle both, since Wisky is not a tiny school (their BB program is better than their solid fball program).

I can't say I'm not excited to see him move on... he's had our number for quite some time.

I never liked him either--I always thought that on TV and in interviews he came off as being really arrogant. He probably chose this year to retire b/c he knows his program is looking at a few losing/rebuilding years and didn't want to take that shot to his ego.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass. I never liked him that much before, but when I read that damn poem that Dayne wrote a few years ago that had a line about how the two of them hated OSU I knew for sure I could not stand him at all.

It's interesting to me that he'd give up coaching and not the AD position.
Coaching is probably a lot more intense/stressful than AD (though AD is still very stressful I imagine)...or maybe he has health problems, I guess we'll have to wait and see
