I'll let you guys know how the boys do today...

I love stuff like this...

Nice job Thump...how'd you do on the long test?
grad21,

I didn't take the long test b/c it's too hard to follow with the editing issues.

Is there a link to a site to take it?

good job thump.....exactly correct....but here is what i was taught...

?...you are on second base with one out...what should you do?
steal third base...a man on third with one out is precious

?...you are on first base with one out and the batter hits a single through the right side..what should you do?
again...this comes down to the type of hit....but if you can get to third with one out...do it....and rule we were taught....never make the first or third out at third....otherwise get there like hell

?...you are on first base with two outs...what DO you do?
you have to steal second base....

?...you are in the dugout, but have a runner on second...what do you watch??
this goes to grads 90% rule....i can tell grad this...98% of the time the pitcher with a runner on second base follows the exact same routine every pitch.....get signal, come set, look back once, lift leg and deliver....if you know the pitcher does that every time....he is easy to steal third on....
stealing third is much easier than stealing second...

as you can tell....i believe 100% in the running game.....its a lost art today....

The edit didn't make it any better? Its clear as can be on my CPU now...
It got better when I copied it and pasted it in Word... but looking at it on here is ugly. Of course it took forever.

About the cutoff man... you have to clarify the question. In a normal situation you should hit the cutoff man so the infield can tell him where to go especially with a lead running that may go home versus letting the guy on first get an easy extra base.

God I love baseball, thus why I am in 3 softball leagues and help run a league. I just wish I didn't abuse my knees and arm as a catcher, killed any chance of playing in college. I blame Sandy Alomar for all of that for starting me on throwing the ball from my knees

I got 34/50, but the last time I played was little league, so I don't know some of the more technical issues with reading pitchers and such. At least I know where to throw the ball, and how to run bases. Even if I did bat around .100 in little league. :)

Grad - Fun test! I got 45 out of 50; there were a couple of things I had never heard before and feel I learned something.

I coach an 11U travel team and as a result, some items may be different from my perspective than a HS perspective. For example, question #40 has 2 answers for me and the group of boys I coach; answers (c) and (d). At this age, they are still learning how important the hands are in hitting (for a couple of the new kids on the team, it is really new to them) as well as how important balance is. (Actually, when we started practicing indoors at the beginning of January, there were some that had issues with too big of a stride, keeping the weight back, and even the whole dynamics of getting loaded; and that was before I looked at how they gripped the bat). This team is going to be quite good this year and I am trying to get the proper fundamentals instilled so that they have a chance to play high school ball. Hopefully, in 4 or so years, their hs coach will be appreciative:wink2:.

Yup that was one of those questions testing what we specifically teach...we emphasize balance in all areas...from a hitting base to phase four of a windup to proper infielder play, we stress balance.

As evidenced by Piney above, much of this is situational according to the player's strengths. However, I feel as though the answers are general fundamental teachings.

The boys did not do as well as I thought...the best score was a 41 and the worst was a 29. Avg Score was about a 37. However it made them think and sparked great discussions...they made some good arguments. For instance, one of our faster players argued that he would certainly bolt for home even on a groundball to the left side...it would be a judgment call. I would hate to break aggressive baserunning from a kid who can pull off such a play but I also want them to know basic baseball. We compromised that he could and should go unless it was to the third baseman...I'm stubborn but I can't harness an athlete like that.

It was good for the kids...some of them will be running poles and triangles for an hour tomorrow

grad.. what a fine document... I've coached for a LONG LONG time... hell, I coached Doubleday... but last couple years has been Babe Ruth (that's kids in 7th to 11th grade) and I never get enough practice time... so this can come in very handy as email tips&tricks...

I disagreed with a couple but they are philosophiccal differences...

IMO the differences between your responses and Alans is generally age or league related...

At the HS level I still try to make these critters robotic... and altho I love kids that can think out there... too much freedom and over thinking can bring back bad-news-bears plays... so at this age, I try to inbed robotics...

When I coached American Legion... absolutely... then I expect them to be able to think too...

I could put you guys in stitches telling you stories coaching 4 and 5 year olds... I learned as much as they did... being the youngest of 8 boys, I assumed everyone was born knowing baseball basics...

PS What's question #33?

PSS Can anyone explain why coaches spend decades teaching a kid good fundamentals... then they go to the pros and become dumber than rocks... Does 10% of all MLB OF's hit a cutoff man?

Reminds me of a story years ago... was doing situations with a summer team... and started with this scenario... well, I called out to the centerfielder.. and asked what would he do.. he yells back "I'd fire it back to the pitcher and scream at him 'that's three guys you've let on base... get your head in the game' " .. we were howling...

Situations can be great....or extremely frustrating. I have to check with the Guiness people to verify if my frustration fungo-toss yesterday is in fact a world record.

I thought we were going to wear a path through the winter rye from running so many triangles
