Best Albums of 2009 (so far)

This is usually an end-of-year thread, but we're near the halfway point now and there has been so much good stuff coming out (IMO) that I wanted to highlight it (lest an a good album or two get lost in the shuffle). I'm interested to see what everybody else is listening to so far.

Best: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion It just found me at the right time. I think it's going to be the one I remember this year by.

Next: Wilco - Wilco (The Album) Technically not released for another week, but I've had it on my iPod for over a month now. Another solid effort, but a notch below their best work.

The Rest (in no particular order):

 • Art Brut - Art Brut vs. Satan
 • Franz Ferdinand - Tonight
 • Heartless Bastards - The Mountain
 • Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
 • Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
 • St. Vincent - Actor
 • Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances (issues last year, re-issued this year, which is how I came to it and how I'm counting it)

Agree about Wilco. One Wing is a killer track.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid
Been listening to Metric - Fantasies and I'm liking it so far...

Never got into Animal Collective that much...I've tried, but I guess I don't get it?

Various Artists - Dark Was the Night
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream
The Decemberists - Hazards of Love
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Regina Spektor - Far
Great Lake Swimmers - Lost Channels

I've only heard the Phoenix CD a few times, but I really like it. Might be one of my faves by the end of the year.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Kylesa - Static Tensions
Coalesce - Ox
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse

It is Crack The Sky! I know the guitar player very well! Rick Witkowski,he plays for B.E.Taylor. The bass player Joe Macre & drummer for Crack The Sky used to play in Bill's band until mid 80's when they left Crack The Sky. I know them as well.not as well as Rick though.
Deeper than Rap - Rick Ross

Other than that... not much.

What do you like about Phoenix, jlb? I wouldnt have called it a best album, but I'd like to hear someone else's opinion.

(waits for ballin....)
Phoenix plays the kind of music that I think everybody thought The Strokes would end up making. This new one is a little more Euro-flavored (rightfully so) than their previous effort It's Never Been Like That. I don't like it quite as much as that one, but I like it pretty well nonetheless.

I've been meaning to check out Metric - thanks for reminding me.

I was never an Animal Collective fan either, although I did kinda like Panda Bear's solo disc. I guess it was just right place, right time for that one for me.

Also, a couple people have mentioned The Decemberists. I've tried to get into that one a couple times now and it still hasn't happened. I really like them overall though, so I'm gonna keep trying.

The band Mastodon had an album called "Crack the Skye." :tongue2:

It helps if you get an idea of what the "story" is for The Hazards of Love before listening to it. Here's a link with a pretty good interpretation.

I liked the album, but I wouldn't call it their best one, let alone album of the year.
