Best Line in all of Rock 'n' Roll

So I'd pick my gittar with a great big grin
And the money just kept on pourin' in
But, then one day my Uncle Sam
He said (sound of 3 footsteps) "Here I am"
"Uncle Sam needs you, boy
I'm-a gonna cut your hair off
ah-Take this rifle, kid
Gimme that guitar" yeah.

I know, but as a kid I loved that song. Sorry. I'll give you some greenies for pointing that out, make it feel better.

error message says I have to give greenies to someone else first. Call this an IOU.

I wasn't exactly being serious you know.

I took it as a good natured jibe.

I loved the Coasters while in jr. high and high school. Charlie Brown - who called the English teacher Daddy-o?, Ally Opp - 'cause he's a mean go getter and a bad motor scooter, Poison Ivy - you can look, but you better not touch, Little Egypt - she got a ruby in her belly and a diamond on her toe - she crawls on her belly like a reptile.

Add in Ernie K-doe's Mother-in-Law - She thinks her advice is the Constitution, but if she would leave that would be the solution.

But my top pick from them would be from Yackety-yack - just tell your hoodlum friends outside, you ain't got time to take no ride. Yackety-yack, don't talk back.

Certainly nothing brilliant or enlightening in their work, but it really connected to the teen - parent conflict. Drove my old man nuts when he'd climb into the car and find I'd left the radio tuned to WING or WONE, Dayton's two am rockers in the 50s and 60s, especially if one of these songs was on.

I could do a Ubet-level WOT (and include most of Leonard Cohen's lyrics) on this topic, but I'll control myself a little bit and just post a few favorites with the shorter ones first:

"But my dreams, they aren't as empty, as my conscience seems to be." (The Who: "Behind Blue Eyes")

"I'm a confident liar. Have my head in the oven so you know where I'll be." (The National: "Conversation 16")

"I come to your door and I hear a moan then another voice, Oh Christ, she's not alone." (The Airborne Toxic Event: "Does this Mean You're Moving On?")

"If their lives were exotic and strange, they would likely have gladly exchanged them for something a little more plain, maybe something a little more sane." (Rush: "Mission")

"You may have got your silver, but I swear upon my life, your sister gave me diamonds . . . and I gave 'em to your wife." (Dire Straits: "The Man's Too Strong")

"I told the priest, don't count on any second coming.
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming.
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us
No I don't wonder why, I wonder what he thought it would get us." (Concrete Blonde: "Tomorrow, Wendy")

"Ah we're drinking and we're dancing and the band is really happening and the johnny walker wisdom running high.
And my very sweet companion, she's the angel of compassion, she's rubbing half the world against her thigh." (Leonard Cohen: "Closing Time")

Oh no love! you're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if i could only
Make you care
Oh no love! you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter when or where you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain
You're not alone

Echoes of The Broadway Everglades
With their mythical madonnas still walking in their shades:
Lenny Bruce delcares a truce and plays his other hand
Marshall McLuhan, casual viewin', head buried in the sand.
Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there's no ships sailing.
Groucho, with his movies trailing, stands alone with his punchline failing.

Ku Klux Klan serve hot soul foood and the band plays "in The Mood"
The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand,
There's a smell of peach blossom and bitter almond.
Caryl Chessman sniffs the air, and leads the parade
He knows, in a scent, you can bottle what you made!

There's Howard Hughes in blue suede shoes
Smiling at the Majorette, smoking Winston cigarettes
And as the song and dance begins, the children play at home
with needles...Needles and pins
