Big Ten Commissioner Jim .. umm .. Delany (official thread)

Goodness, this is the worst fucking idea I've ever seen...

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is trying to get feedback to be used in negotiating the next series of TV deals for the league. The current contracts run through 2016 (with Fox for the conference football championship game) and ’17 (with ESPN and ABC for regular-season games).

If the networks want Big Ten games on Friday nights — a slot traditionally reserved for high schools — Delany wants to know where his constituents stand and an idea of what a commitment like that would be worth.

The real solution is to play football on Saturdays that people actually want to see, not to voluntarily drop down a weight class and compete for eyeballs with the Juggalos and Truck Drivers on weeknights. Not to mention, most schools in the league are having a hard enough time recruiting as it is. Now the commissioner is floating an idea to make it so Indiana or Illinois can't get a kid in for an official visit when he wants to go because those teams are playing the same night as his high school? That'll sure help make the league better. Fuck off with this idea.

okay, i don't think this is a horrible idea as long as it is used sparingly. The idea of turning on a Friday night college football game once every two or three weeks doesn't excite anyone? Thursday night pac 10 football, frida ynight and all day Saturday. that's three days of college football!

1. I love watching football. I'd watch it Thursday night, Friday night, all day Saturday, all day Sunday, Monday night, Tuesday night, and Wednesday night. Of course, since I pretend to have a life and responsibilities, I can't watch all the football I want to. But the more that's on, the better. The same goes for Friday night.
2. That said, Friday night is about the worst night for college football. I think even Tuesday or Wednesday night is better, though all three of those options are pretty crummy. Thursday night is the best of the four options, especially since the Pac-10 has been putting some really good games on that night. I wouldn't mind seeing 2-3 big Big Ten games played on Thursday nights, each year. But Friday - That's a good time for Ball State to play Indiana State. Voluntarily playing on Friday night is admitting that you're in the same league as Ball State or Indiana State.

Outsider opinion here.

I'm sure the allure of having a prime time spotlight on Friday is tough to turn down, it might be a better idea to compete for eyeballs on Saturday evening and afternoon by allowing games to be played at night or later in the day in November.

Baggot writes that Delany is also floating the idea of night games as late in the season as November, another break with current Big Ten scheduling policy, though cautioning that either change would be "years away," if even approved.

Just my

worth here:

For whatever reason I always believed that colleges didn't play on Friday night as to not compete with high school games. Likewise the NFL doesn't play on Saturday (until the college season is over) as to not compete with college games, etc.

Sitting at home and watching a (Monday thru) Friday night Ohio State football (home) game on TV is different than actually going to the game. As a season ticket holder I prefer the home games to be played Saturday afternoon. I'm sure Saturday afternoon is better for most students too; including the players.

The night games in November idea has been kicked around for a few years. For the life of me I can't understand why it would take several years to implement. 80% of the games scheduled in any given season are announced with a kickoff time of "TBA". Just fucking do it. If the leagues position is that they see that as representing added value that they would want to extract dollars from a TV network for, then just put those games on BTN in the meantime.

To me a primetime spot on Friday is easy to turn down because on top of all the other reasons I've already mentioned, it's the worst possible time to attract viewers. Friday night is where TV networks put sunk-cost sitcoms and dramas they want to cancel. The article says the networks approached Delany, not the other way around. Beware of TV networks bearing gifts. They are selling him a bill of goods, speculating on something to stick in a timeslot that never attracts viewers no matter what's there. There's hardly any viewership to be gained on Friday nights, and putting Rutgers vs. Purdue in that spot certainly isn't going to change that.

Normally the home games are our biggest recruiting tools. If a game is played on a Friday night no recruits would be able to come. Besides, I'd like to think that most big time footballers in the state of Ohio watch the Buckeyes on Saturday afternoons. They obviously wouldnt be able to do that on Friday nights.

I guess part of the package proposal is that every B1G school has to play at least once on Fridays (according to BTN).

But does anyone recall the Thursday game against Marshall at Ohio Stadium? I wasn't there. Did they have to clear campus by maybe 2 p.m.? Was it full (parking lots, tailgating, etc.)?

This entire thing is probably the brainchild of ESPiN (don't want to show WAC games on Fridays).

I was there. It was lame.

I parked near the stadium with no traffic along the way. I walked straight into VC, didn't have to wait to order a beer and stood wherever I wanted because there was plenty of room. It was weird.

The highlight of the experience was walking past the mostly empty Riverwatch tailgate and seeing Buck-I-Guy standing by himself eating an entire large pizza.

Worst. Idea. Ever. Friday night football is for games like UNLV versus Nevada. Sure, they could be exciting games, and there could be exciting finishes, but they are also games that if you miss because you, I don't know, do something besides watch football every night, are no big deal. They already have diminishing returns during bowl season because of the number of games, the frequency of the games, and the fact that it drags on well past when it should. They are trying to do the same thing with the regular season now. Anyone want to play Michigan on a Thursday or Friday night? Didn't think so.
