I would never bash any MBA program full-time or part-time, but having just left a great job to pursue my MBA, I have done a ton or research on the subject and the WSJ ranks are a joke. Hell, I am sitting in strategy class right now. If the main criteria is the job you get after school, then take into account the average starting salary, which WSJ doesn't. I know I banking pays more, but HBS is not an I. Banking school nor is standford. In addition, Business week did a study on the long term effect of an MBA with many top schools. HBS grads averaged almost seven figure salaries 10 years out of school, while they didn't study scUM grads, I am sure they do not.

A major aspect of top B-schools are the people you work with and have in your network for life. Almost nobody would turn down HBS for scUM B-school, even if offered a full ride. The rankings should take into account where the best applicants go.

In early Oct Business week comes out with there rankings, I can predict that you will see the top 7 (not in order): HBS, Standford, wharton, kellogg, chicago, sloan, columbia.

Like I said B-school is what you make of it, but you can't rank them on one criteria like the WSJ does.

Thanks, Bucknola, I'll take a look. I've checked out some similar rankings and have norrowed down the choices somewhat. Any feel for the level of prejudice against foreign MBAs in the US? I know it's like anything else, you make it work for you or it won't work for you, whatever it is, but I'd appreciate your take on it.

I have been where you are now.
I remember doing all the research including school rankings, school costs, cost of living and employment after graduation.
Let's hope when you finish you do not end up where sloop is now, good luck sloopy!
Like I said go to vault.com and read all the sad stories of the Ivy league guys with big debts and no jobs. Hell I know several folks looking for a job with just those high pedigree credentials.

It has been awhile but I think I scored a 700? maybe a little higher on my GMAT and had a chance to go to Tulane, Rice, Wharton and few others. I did a cost benefit analysis and a serious lifestyle analysis. I am glad I made my choice.

As for Business Week to me that is a joke because it is the dean's and professor ranking the program. It almost like the college footbal poll early in the season. Oklahoma, Miami and the usual suspects are there whether they deserve it or not. Harvard will be there forever because it is Harvard.

I have also had the not so enjoyable opportunity to take some executive level classes taught by a few Harvard profs. Maybe my expectations were too high but because you speak with a New England accent does not make them more intelligent than everyone else. I know, just my isolated case. I do know one Harvard prof that has helped work on a IT software project and he is as sharp as a whip and a hell of nice guy.

In reality it is a case by case basis.

Networking is a key and to me that is the only real advantage of the top dollar school. A few of the top Ivy Leaguers do make the big bucks, I would suggest that many more do not and probably do not recover the opportunity cost. There have been many recent articles to that effect also.

I have a good idea what my Havard MBA boss made and I know I make more than that now. I do not know where he is at now and what he is making. I heard that he had gone back to Boston to work on a technology start up company.

So what school are you going to Dixie?
What do you want to do once you get out?

Rugby
To quote a successful Harvard MBA, begin with the end in mind. Who do you want to work for? Doing what? Living where? Try to network and see how the International MBA would be considered. As we have discussed here it is becoming a more international world everyday. For you the question will be will the investment be a better return over the path you are on now? An MBA is much like law school. Can the wife and kids go through that? How about you?

The MBA has become a sort of cure all for a lot of people. They think by getting one they will jump into or rise rapidly into upper management. If you are a lousy accountant an MBA will not make you better. When I got mine it was estimated that 100,000 people would get one that year. It has to much more than that now.

I am at Kellogg, which explains why I like the Business Week rankings so much :) however they are widely used along with US News. I am currently studying finance and marketing. I guess the full time/part time decision comes to what you want to do after school and your situation. Fortunately, I don't have a family to worry about. But I do think it would be next to impossible to work for a Goldman or a McKinsey without a top full time MBA.

Here is a website with the composite rankings:

Also, here are more of the WSJ rankings, BTW HBS ranks higher than Hass, despite your experience with both.

Thanks for the reply.
I agree with the McKinsey comment.
I see CM is #2.
For some reason everyone I have ever encountered from that school has been what you would expect from a top school.

Good luck.
You will have to tell how many strategy classes you had before they mentioned Porter or Hamel. I got tired of reading those two after awhile.

The economist just released their rankings; I am a big fan of these :) J/K Business Week comes out with there’s tomorrow, although I have heard there was a lot of behind the scenes politics this time. We shall see, but it will be interesting to see if HBS and Wharton make a big jump after threatening to cut BW off from interviews if they do not move up significantly.

Nola:

I'm afraid to tell you, it will give you ammo against full time programs. Most private B-schools go for about $35K a year for tuition alone, my financial aid said low 60's per year total, but that is with a pretty low living standard. I would say $65K for your first year. Probably about $125K minus what I would make for my summer internship. All my loans are low interest and some don't start accruing until I graduate.

been there.. done that...
this is a bit longer than I wanted... but I do have some very strong opinions here...

just like your undergrad degree, where you get your MBA is important but you better have proven business results and not just sheepskin for anything past mid tier... with a couple exceptions...

with all due respect to the various excellent MBA programs, I just did a consulting gig for a major broadcasting firm in Manhattan... part of my assignment was to create a target list for a major launch initiative for this firm... what was pretty astounding was the number of HARVARD MBAs that are in the echelon of many MAJOR firms.. often times the owners/CEOs or other C-levels... even I was impressed... It's not just a few... it's huge...

couple caveats.. Wharton is probably THE tightest group that exists... Wharton alumni execs will ensure their brethren are taken care of... huge alumni loyalty... if you're up for a job competing with a Wharton grad and the hiring exec is Wharton alum.. fuggeditaboutit... game over... also, if you ever plan to work in the Northeast in a top tier job, the Ivy league in-breeding at the exec tiers is often inpenetrable.

I highly recommend you stay with colleges that have a notoriety (immediate NAME recognition - moreso than these ratings, per se)... it'll make your resume stand out to the first line in the recruiting process... I am not saying an MBA from Bluefield College didn't teach you as much as an MBA from Rutgers... but your school has to have name recognition (preferably nationally and not just regionally) to that entry level recruiter or your resume is dying right there...

as far as the MBA itself... the degree doesn't make you brilliant any more than a law degree makes you brilliant... but what it does is teach you a PROCESS to see/recognize a problem, break it down, evaluate the alternatives and determine the solution... QUICKLY... that's what an MBA does... that's the edge they bring...

also, IMO, the MBA was THE most enjoyable educational experience of my life... you are in there with a lot of brainy folks... and many who have already made it in life... so to have them as part of your work teams is an education within an education... to have the CEO of Warner Cable on your team like I had was pretty special input...

Couple personal suggestions... the interaction and team work I noted just above was invaluable... I worry that an all online degree might miss that element... I also suggest that a person work for a couple years after undergrad before starting grad school... It'll make the various topics mean a lot more since you'll be able to relate vs it just being an abstract textbook item.

and lastly, I don't know where many of these lists came from... but in the top circles Thunderbird is recognized as the best of the best for International business on the planet...

for what my opinion is worth... and no, I do not have degrees from these schools... my lessons were learned the hard way

Dixie & NJ

I am not anti big school or anti MBA.
My point was for discussion.
I have always been suspect of any rating service whether for MBA or college football.

I made my choice based on a lot of reasons, personal, financial and professional.
I had no desire to live in CA, Chicago, NY or the east coast for that matter. I have worked for Dupont, called on Exxon and Shell and am a business partner of IBM and Microsoft. Those corporate cultures are just not for me.
You both have experience and have made some calculated choices based on what is best for you.

That was probably my major point. If you know what you want and how you are going to get there you are ahead of the game. Getting an MBA was fun for me but for many it is a lot of debt in the futile hope they will get some satisfaction or promotion. It is not the magic bullet it once was. For me the MBA was way to put the scattered pieces of education and experience I had into a organized, complete package. From there I will agree with NJ, business results matter.

Dixie, Keep us posted. I think we have quite a few MBA's here and a few that are in the process. Many could benefit from your insights. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

and one more thing...

I didn't pay for mine ... company did...
but I readily admit, it would be a much tougher decision if I had to pay it on my own...

the way I see it... it's a supply and demand world.. even in hiring...

more conceptually than factually.. compared to a few decades ago...
what used to require a HS diploma, now 'requires' a bachelors
what used to require a bachelors, now 'requires' an MBA

why? because the supply is there and they can get away with it...

it would be tough to weigh out the pay back on the huge bucks it takes to get an MBA... same for law degree...

I think the Duke online option has been around awhile.

I still believe you have to meet if only once a month or a quarter?

If the company pays and you will benefit go for it.
Ask your company, vendors and customers how they feel about an online MBA, especially from Duke.

As NJ mentioned the MBA will eventually, if not already, be the price of admission to the better jobs.

My ROI was simple. My company paid half. I got loans for the other half. I pay $300 a month in loans which did not start until I graduated and I earned an additional $5,000 per month after my MBA. That figure increased as I have changed jobs twice. I went back for 6 grad level courses in Technology Management which cost me $5,000 and I got an annual bump of $6,000 from that.

Tall .. I don't think you even need to do this.. because you will never publish or broadcast anything but the fact you have your MBA from Duke... No one will ever ask nor do they need to know it was the executive weekend pgm, the every other thursday for breakfast pgm or the online version...

If I were you.. this one would be a slam dunk...

the only thing I wouldn't do .. is wait another minute thinking about it...

as the song says "Let's get this party started"....

I know someone that did the executive program at duke (everyother weekend) they had a great experience, but it was very time consuming. I believe he took everyother Friday to make it a 3 day weekend. I don't know anyone that has done the online program, but Fuqua is a good school and I am sure it is valuable. The only other cost other than time is if you were thinking about doing another MBA program. Very rarely would they let someone do a second MBA program.
