Louisville booster says school doesn’t have the money to buy out Bobby Petrino right now

Louisville is coming off a game in which they were outscored 66-31 and allowed the second-most rushing yards in school history. They are 2-4 at the halfway mark of the 2018 campaign. The normally high-flying offense can barely move the football.

All of which is to say, the fan base is very unhappy with Bobby Petrino. Just not enough, apparently, to open up the purse strings and send the embattled head coach packing.

“The university is not in a position to buy him out,” Tom Meeker, a Louisville Athletic Association board member, told the Courier Journal.

At issue: Petrino’s buyout has been pegged at roughly $14 million if he were fired after or during this season, to say nothing of the cost of getting rid of the rest of the current coaching staff. That figure is not too far off the $15.4 million owed to Texas’ Tom Herman or the $16 million amount owed to Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy for some context.

Perhaps of bigger concern for Louisville than the play on the field for the Cardinals is the fact that the slumping football team is causing sharp decreases in the amount being donated to the program. The Courier Journal reports that the school’s athletic administration fund is down more than two-thirds in the past year thanks to the hire of a new basketball coach and a settlement with former athletic director Tom Jurich. Donations are down considerably and there’s still construction debt and pending lawsuits to deal with as well.

One reader comment was: Couldn’t they just leave the keys in a gassed up Harley out in front of his office with a willing Co-ed on the back?

Kind of let things take care of themselves from that point……

File this under "recruiting chicanery":

Louisville asks South Carolina RB to grayshirt at a tough time

With 48 hours to go until being able to submit his National Letter of Intent to Louisville, South Carolina running back Matt Colburn was asked to put his Louisville plans on hold until next January. Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino pulled a scholarship offer to Colburn that had been verbally accepted for the past eight months with the request he enroll next January and grayshirt for the Cardinals.

“They want him to [grayshirt], which is him coming in next January,” Colburn’s high school coach Tom Knotts said to The State. “Matt has been committed to them almost eight months. We’re all very upset about it.”

So close to signing day, the search for a new football home is going to plaid right now for Colburn, but the options this late in the recruiting game are limited at best.

“Right now, we’re being proactive in trying to reach out to other schools but he really shut himself off from all the other schools relative to his recruitment,” Knotts explained. “We have to get his name back out there. We’re not happy about it. We’ll see what else might pop up.”

This sort of thing happens every season, so Louisville is far from the first or last school to use this method of recruiting and roster management. To do so this close to National Signing Day may come off a little odd though, and there is no question it is unfortunate for the recruit.

SKULL SESSION: SAINTS BUCKEYES BALL, ELDON MILLER GETS A HOMECOMING AND MICHIGAN STATE'S PRESIDENT HAS A B1G CONSPIRACY

REVENGE GAME. Wake Forest running back Matt Colburn had the ultimate flex this weekend, dropping a career day on a coach who pulled a scholarship offer out from under his feet at the last minute.

Negandhi corrected himself, adding that Colburn did actually have a scholarship at Wake Forest, I bet I'm sure that doesn't change how good this felt:

t's a shame his revenge had to come against one of the kindest, most well-respected coaches in the business. I really hate to see high-character individuals like Petrino get embarrassed like that.

Saw his picture in a thread today, and I forgot to share a story with BP.

Visited with a customer from Little Rock this past spring. We talk about a great many things including Razorback football.
Customer Rep looks at me and says, "We've heard from some pretty connected people that Bobby didn't show up looking that, because of a motorcycle accident. Her boyfriend beat the shit out of him."
:slappy: Just had to share that.

Still find it interdasting that the boyfriend ended up marrying her, but that's neither here nor there.

The boyfriend may have laid hand on him before those pics, but that's clearly road rash.
