MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE (5-1; .833)

SUN BELT CONFERENCE (3-1; .750)

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (3-1; .750)

BIG 12 CONFERENCE (5-2; .714)

BIG TEN CONFERENCE (6-4; .600)
So much for not being ready to play in the New Year's Six for the Big Ten. Ohio State overcame a multi-touchdown deficit to beat Utah in the Rose Bowl Game while Michigan State scored 21 points down the stretch to take out ACC champion Pittsburgh in the Peach. Had it not been for Michigan's loss to Georgia in the CFB Playoff, the conference would be 7-3 (.700) with a shot at a national title. Purdue's win over Tennessee in a virtual road game was a surprise and Minnesota's defensive destruction of West Virginia got the conference off on the right foot.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE (6-8; .428)

MAC (3-5; .375)

CONFERENCE-USA (3-5; .375)

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (2-4; .333)

PAC-12 CONFERENCE (0-5; .000)

The ACC and PAC-12 were both weak this year, which is one of the reasons UC got into the CFP.

Without Georgia and Alabama, the SEC would be 4-8. Did all 14 SEC teams play in a bowl game (6+8=14)? That can't be right - Vanderbilt only had two wins this season.

The ACC is weak every year, they just didn't have Clemson to cover for them this time.

And I think the 6-8 already includes 1 loss and 1 win from the title game?

College football bowl games: Ranking top 10 from 2021

1. ROSE BOWL — OHIO STATE 48, UTAH 45

10841206.jpg

PASADENA, CA - JANUARY 01: Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Denzel Burke (29) and his teammates celebrate on the field after the Buckeyes defeated the Utah Utes 48 to 45 to become the Rose Bowl Champions in a bowl game played on January 1, 2022 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena CA.

The “Grandaddy of them all” always provides some interest for fans and this one did not even come close to disappointing. Utah raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and it looked like Ohio State did not even want to be there. But the offense then exploded for both teams and we got a good, old-fashioned shootout. C.J. Stroud had 573 yards and six touchdowns passing. Cameron Rising threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 92 yards and a touchdown before suffering an injury. After Utah tied it with 1:54 to play, Ohio State went on a seven-play, 56-yard drive and kicked a game-winning field goal with nine seconds remaining.

The NDSU Bison are a wagon. Going for their 9th FCS title out of the last 10 played (lost 2016, Covid 2020).

Up 14-0 early and Montana State Bobcats have a hobbled starting QB.

NDSU o-line and ground game is too punishing. Montana St had a slim chance even with a healthy qb.

Also, at the risk of derailing this into a playoff expansion conversation, I think NDSU is a good counterpoint to the argument that FBS playoff expansion would help spread the power to other teams. Seems like it's even more concentrated in the fcs level than the FBS level even with its extensive playoff format.

For the record, I'm not totally against FBS playoff expansion (at least to 6 or 8 teams, anything more is excessive imo and I'd be against that).

I think spreading the power and expansion are two different things.

IMO, expanding the field will make for some more interesting games among the lesser teams that don't really have a big separation between them. Different styles of play, different conferences etc. I think that part will be like Bowl games used to be when you'd have some really cool match ups.

The part that won't change is that the same 2-3 teams keep being the same 2-3 teams at the top of the recruiting rankings every year, then there is going to be a big gap between them and the rest of the field.

The theory the expansion folks put forth is that ultra elite kids see lower teams in CFP, kids want to be in CFP, maybe elite kid goes to "lesser" school now. What that theory doesn't account for is the kids wanting to get to the NFL more than just be in the CFP. A handful of schools are known NFL factories. As time has gone on, those teams are like a college version of IMG. The best of the best go there to get a jump start on getting to the next level.

I don't know for sure but I don't think playoff expansion will dilute the concentration of elite talent at the top 2-3 schools. NIL might, but expanded playoffs won't imo.

I do too. However, I have heard people make the argument FOR expansion that it would spread power. So I was addressing that particular argument for expansion.

Well said. I agree completely.

I too wouldn't mind the playoff field expanded for the reasons you stated. Some new match ups. Even though the semi's were blowouts this year, they did provide new match ups that were at least interesting in theory. More games could lead to more opportunities for interesting match ups (or at least potentially interesting ones).

There are some legitimately good arguments for expansion. Some of the more popular ones that are made by proponents of expansion, however, don't fall into that category.
