Bielema fighting Irish's BCS birthright

Madison - As he runs his team through 6:30 a.m. practices in preparation for their spring game on Saturday, Wisconsin's Bret Bielema hasn't had much time to reflect on his first season as a head coach.

"I understand why certain teams get exemptions. I don't understand why Notre Dame does," Bielema said in an interview with The Associated Press this week. "If they want to play by conference rules, join a conference. They don't take, maybe, into consideration past bowl history. Notre Dame hasn't won in the last nine bowl appearances, or whatever it is. And to me, we've proven over time that we deserve the opportunity."

UW football: Bielema, Badgers deal with more hype

A year ago, the University of Wisconsin football team had a giant unknown. It was the guy sitting in the head coach's chair, with the fantastic view, in the big office at the north end of Camp Randall Stadium. Second-year UW coach Bret Bielema is the first to acknowledge no one knew how he would perform last year, from the writers and editors who put together the preseason football magazines, to the high school seniors who were trying to make decisions about what schools to attend.
"We had seven kids that signed with us this past February that were commits to other schools and I couldn't blame them," Bielema said.

I read a lot of posts saying something to the effect of, "I can't stand Bielema," up to and after the Wisky game. I must have missed something. What's the cause of the venom?

He gives the impression that he believes his excrement to be odorless.

That, and he let a top-10 team quit on him after a couple of tough losses. Even with a "gimme" against Cal-Poly in week 12, the Badgers are going to struggle to become bowl-eligible this year.

There's probably more to it than just odorless fecal matter. Over a long period of time Wisconsin's fans developed a rep for going over the top in bad behavior... marshmallow "snow balls" loaded with quarters, spitting, taunts, etc. The choking incident didn't help matters, nor did Tressel cover himself with glory when he gave out a one game suspension.

I dunno. I've always liked Wisconsin and was glad to see the program come back and be competitive. It's a fantastic college town to spend time in.

I always liked Wisky's program. Bielma was a little cocky/arrogrant when he had Alaverz's players, now when he's starting to recruit his OWN players is when we see how "good" he really is. It's starting to show.

This may not be a big story, but it's in the news lately.

UW sports scholarship money funds mopeds, cars

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW football players used scholarship funds earmarked for housing and food to purchase mopeds, and in some cases, cars.

Senior Jonathan Casillas told 27 News the practice of ciphoning money from room and board uses made sense.

"Once you get to your second, third year, you start learning what's cheap (housing), what's expensive. Maybe live with somebody and split the rent. And hopefully you can get a moped, or maybe even a car. Some people got cars."

Casillas told 27 News he bought his moped from a housing scholarship stipend. Casillas was also arrested on that moped for alleged first offense drunk driving. Casillas has a plea hearing scheduled for April 22.

27 News verified at least 22 starting players or top reserves on the roster of the Badger football team which played in last December's Champs Sports Bowl have received traffic citations on mopeds, including tight end Lance Kendricks' conviction for drunk driving on a moped.

UW Athletic Department officials said the room and board stipend for full scholarship athletes living off-campus for the current school year is $8,986 (housing: $6,028; food: $2,958). The monthly average is $1,009.

Officials said the stipend amount is derived using a formula provided by the NCAA which factors in the listed, average costs of on-campus housing and food for all students.

Off campus room and board subsidies provided to full scholarship student athletes at several other Big Ten schools surveyed by 27 News were consistent with stipend amounts at UW. At Ohio State, officials said full scholarship athletes received $15,988 for room and board to cover four academic quarters, with a monthly average of $1,332.
