Brian "Body Kount" Kelly (HC Louisiana State)

Yes, let's see how many places you can make BP look bad.

Yes, by sticking up for my alma mater, I make BP look horrible. Then again, I guess you have no problems with those boards that constantly have threads running bashing everything about Ohio State University. Heaven forbid an alumnus should actually respond.

And as far as my UC comments go, they are the same sentiments expressed by dozens of BP posters alumni and non-alumni alike. Even UC grads!

Only half joking here, but why not give old Bobbah B. a call if Kelly does bolt to the domers? He will definitely be available ! I think he would jump at the chance to try and beat JoPa in overall wins.

I have no issue with those "dozens of BP posters alumni and non-alumni alike." Nor do I disagree with most of the assertions made by them or by you concerning the comparative quality of OSU versus other Ohio schools. Nor do I have a dog in that hunt, given that my academic ties are in the state of Virginia.

It's simply the never-ending self-congratulatory mean-spirited self-tribute to The ORD Almighty with which I take issue. It truly is astounding that such an excellent education would leave one so small-minded. I am simply thankful that this seems to be an individual issue and not representative of those many other OSU alumni for whom I do indeed have much respect.

It's one thing to read it here, and quite another to see this budding notion that this level of vitriol is somehow representative of BP, or that heaven forbid, your voice in some way speaks for the site. You are breaking no rules, so feel free to proceed, I guess. Let's just get it out on the table that it is not, and never will be, the case that you in any way, shape, or form speak for BuckeyePlanet.

I think it's important to stipulate that UC, Miami of OH, Ohio U, Bowling Green, etc. etc. do not now nor will they in future qualify for the level of shenanigans, disdain, excoriation nor general "fuck them" that should be reserved solely for the University of Michigan, The Faithless Whore Ann Arbor Campus.

The Edsall thing is heating up on the ND boards. Not a lot of support for it. Of course, many over there were cool on Kelly, so perhaps the Edsall reports will push them into his camp.

Of course, if ND is serious about Kelly they need at least one more serious candidate or they have no bargaining power.

Sounds like a bunch of smoke. Who cares if he's "defensive minded"? Just look at his record. He's 65-65 at UConn. Sure, that program is relatively new to Div. I-A, but he actually coached them for their last year in I-AA - and led them to a 4-8 record. The year before UConn was 10-3 under Skip Holtz and went to the quarterfinals. UConn has not had a 10-win season since then.

Also, UConn had four players drafted last year, all in the first two rounds. Notre Dame only had one player drafted last year - in Round 4. Sounds like a step up for ND, right? Well, not so much when you consider that with all that talent, UConn only managed an 8-5 record last year, only one game better than Notre Dame's record last season.

Here's where I think the mutual interest comes from: Edsall is interested in getting his name in print because being mentioned for a high-profile job is good for recruiting when you're in his position. Notre Dame can use Edsall to negotiate Kelly's potential contract down. If I'm Kelly and I really do want the Notre Dame job, I tell my agent to call bullshit on this move.

Personally, I'd love to see ND fans throw a fit if they hired a guy like Edsall, but I just don't see that one happening at all. For all the bad moves they've made, none of them had a resume (real or fake) as uninspiring as this one.

I have never even entertained the notion that I "speak" for BP on any issue, and anyone on The Other State University boards who would believe that one person is such a voice for a diverse forum of thousands of members is an imbecile. That's the reason I found that UC thread so amusing, not because I believe that it was an accurate portrayel of any influence or weight I carry on this board.

As for my feelings towards some of the other public universities in Ohio being vitriolic and mean spirited, guilty as charged. This goes beyond a football rivalry. What they, and their administrations, did and attempted to do to Ohio State in the not too distant past should never be forgotten nor forgiven. I can assure you that it isn't in Bricker Hall. And while I may not hide my disgust for them, in no way does it mean that I think they are horrible or irrelevant universities or serve no purpose to the taxpayers of Ohio. Nor does it carry over in any way to the many posters on this board who attended those universities many of whom are some of my favorite posters on BP. I think I've made that clear on several occasions.

I think that is exactly what this is...Kelly's camp has been leaking all kinds of information about meetings with ND, etc...And then he sends a text to the enquirer late yesterday to say "hey, I'm still talking with UC, too!"...
I think this was ND's response. I am willing to bet Kelly's sphincter just clinched shut when he read it. He is not going to get the academic exemptions he wants and he's not going to get the hefty raise he wants, either...he overplayed his hand and now he has to take the ND job on ND's terms or he has to come grovelling back to Clifton.

either way, he has come off as a complete ass in this process.

Look at that depth chart again. This is his year to make a move. ND probably know that also.

Negotiations may be focused on what is guaranteed and what is contingent on performance.

It does seem quite coincidental that this news is "leaked" just as Harbaugh is emphatically taking himself out of consideration. Seems like the domers needed another stalking horse to use and then discard.

Interesting that Harbaugh is out of it. So far we have Urban immediately declaring his lack of interest, rejecting the Golden Dome for the second time, Stoops having said no and rumored to be over the academic exemptions issue, and now some back and forth with Kelly. I am presuming that with Harbaugh that there was at least some back channel communication going on, so they're at best down to their fourth choice, and it's possible that Patterson was contacted as well.

Randy Edsell seems like a decent guy, but I don't think he's the splashy hire Notre Dame needs to convince the world that they might one day be relevant, so yeah, it's a diversion and not a particularly good one. Kelly is tough minded enough to call their bluff. Really, both sides are bluffing poorly. Kelly throws out something about staying at UC and ND counters with Edsell? Come on. You're both horrible liars. Kelly has no intention of being in Clifton in 2010 and ND is not going to offer Edsell.
