Broncos fire Josh McDaniels

The Denver Broncos have fired coach Josh McDaniels, who went 5-17 after winning his first six games last year.
Team spokesman Patrick Smyth told The Associated Press: "We can confirm that coach Josh McDaniels has been relieved of his head coaching duties."

The team did not immediately name an interim coach.McDaniels, 34, made a series of personnel blunders, notably trading away Peyton Hillis, who has become a power running back in Cleveland, and he also was fined $50,000 by the NFL for failing to report a subordinate who violated league rules by videotaping a San Francisco 49ers practice in London on Oct. 30.
The firing came down after the Broncos players had dispersed for the day.
Earlier Monday, McDaniels said he was reticent to turn to rookie Tim Tebow even though the Broncos (3-9) had been eliminated from the playoff race Sunday with their seventh loss in eight games.
Broncos owner Pat Bowlen seemed to waffle last week when asked about McDaniels' job status in the wake of the video scandal.
Bowlen originally told AOL Fanhouse that McDaniels was safe as head coach and that he was "not interested in making a coaching change." However, Bowlen released a statement hours later that seemed to back off that idea.
Bowlen's statement said that while the season has been a trying and disappointing one, "Josh McDaniels is the head coach of the Broncos, and you always strive for stability at that position."
He added that with five games left, "we will continue to monitor the progress of the team and evaluate what's in the best interest of this franchise."
McDaniels is the third coach fired this season, joining Wade Phillips and Brad Childress. He has two years and nearly $7 million left on his contract, and Bowlen is still on the hook for millions more he owes Mike Shanahan, whom he fired last year.
McDaniels came to the Broncos in 2009 after spending two seasons as the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator, having been promoted from quarterbacks coach in 2006 to make him the youngest coordinator in the league at the time.

The only surprise in this is the fact that the owner just denied they would fire him last week. Other than that, his play calling has been awful, and his team has played even worse.

I'm still surprised they pulled the plug after only two years. If memory serves, this means that next year the Nags will be paying Shanny, McKid, and the new coach. One for the price of three, what a deal!!!

He came in, traded three of their biggest assets on offense (franchise QB, franchise WR, good TE), takes the team from having a bright future (at least on offense) to no pieces to build around.

What a disastrous hire.

Not to mention the Hillis travesty, for Brady freaking Quinn! McKid, as a Brown's fan I thank you a thousand times over.

He has a long way to go to be a franchise player. McDaniels screwed this franchise. It's sad that the best piece to build around is Tebow.

(I know you were being sarcastic)

I guess Moreno is a good piece. And they do have a franchise left tackle. But they had some serious talent on offense before he arrived. Their offense so far this year, while it put up tons of yardage, was all system. You can't win without at least a little bit of a running game.. and you probably can't win with Kyle Orton either.

It was an awful trade, but I can understand why they did it. They have Moreno now anyways.

This is my major gripe with professional sports. Hire someone to do a job and if they don't succeed fast enough for you, dump em like prom date on Sunday. I get the trade [censored] ups, but seriously, 1 and half years? Although it couldn't have happened to a nicer franchise. [censored] the donkeys for ruining some early childhood memories of good Browns teams. And Elway, your restaurant sucks and so do your cars. /rant

I think maybe as an owner you look at this team and see no real future or direction.

I wouldn't go that far.

True. It will be a major rebuilding job, which stinks. I really hate to fire a guy after only 1 1/2 years, but with the spygate II saga in addition to all of the other issues, it was time. That team was set on offense before he arrived(D was terrible, but had some decent talent in Bailey,Dumervil and Williams), now they have next to nothing.

Hey, we are even. Elway had the Drive. Byner is responsible for the Fumble. We took C. Brown, Big Money, and other Browncos. We gave you Hillis. You planted a spy in McDaniels (from Northeast Ohio, hmmmmmm). I'd say it's even.
