Browns' drafts since 1999

A look back at the demise of the Browns since it's new inception in 1999.

No doubt Davis did a royal screw job in his drafts, especially last years. Millen made Davis his bitch by laying one over on him when Winslow would have been there at #7. Nevermind the fact that he passed over Shawn Andrews, D'Angelo Hall, and Dunta Robinson. Shit, Ben Troupe was there in the second if he just kept that pick. Even though he would have never known for sure, giving up a second to move up one spot that wasn't necessary is cause for immediate firing. Sean Jones may turn out to be good, but trading up like that to get him makes no sense at all. Considering there was plenty of equals sitting there in the third round had they stood pat.

I still think Faine wasn't a bad pick. His family happens to be friends with mine so maybe I have some bias there, but the kid has brains and guts to go along with skill which is so important at center. I think the Fowler pick was to get some depth at center and guard. That said, Steinbach may have been the better pick there instead of Faine. I'm still confused on the Chaun Thompson pick. I don't care how good he looked at the combines. He was as raw as it gets. Like Prof said, Doss was there and so was LJ Smith and Jason Witten (that TE he could have gotten before Winslow). Chris Crocker may end up being the best pick in that draft. You can't argue with the Suggs pick.

I think we all can agree that picking Green over Portis was assinine. Picking him over Ed Reed has turned out to be the bigger issue. Davis could have picked Reed (and I remember many calling for his name to be announced) and still have gotten Portis or switched Reed for Portis in the 1st and gotten Michael Lewis now of Philly in the second. 2002 is where they really fucked up the Safety/RB positions. Picking Fowler in the third was ok, but he passed up on Ayodele instead. There's the OLB position that Chaun Thompson is "trying" to fill. You move to round 4 and they grabbed Taylor and Bentley. I like Bentley, but had they grabbed Ayodele they could have probably spent the 2 4th rounders on Randy McMichael (oh that TE position again), Alex Brown, or David Thornton. Andra Davis was a steal at round 5.

In 2001, there's obviously a problem draft Warren at 3. I remember hearing how inconsistent he was at Florida. I guess Butch thinks he's a miracle worker with all these raw, inconstent picks. The fact that he passed up on Tomlinson, Seymour, Stroud, and Hutchinson blows my mind. Moving up a spot to get Leonard Davis may not have been a bad move and I bet a 3rd rounder would have been all it takes. Morgan in the second? He had bad hands at K-State for god sakes. Taking him when you've already done two straight 2nd round WR's is crazy. The fact that they took him over Chad Johnson is really crazy, not to mention, Kendrell Bell, Ken Lucas, Fred Smoot, and Kris Jenkins passing by. James Jackson's pick in the third had to be a Miami guy picking a Miami player pick. You're sitting there knowing you need an OL and you pass over Kareem McKenzie and Mike Gandy. Anthony Henry in the 4th was a good pick. But considering Rudi Johnson was there, makes that James Jackson pick look even more terrible. Jeremiah Pharms really takes the cake on idiotic thinking. Jemetrius Butler would have been the better selection.

2000...what would you have done? The top 3 were clearly Brown, Arrington, and Samuels. I think most of us was loving the thought of making Samuels, Couch's protector, but a DE that had Brown's "potential" was hard to pass on. Northcutt wasn't the answer in the second. I knew they needed another WR but they could have easily waited another round and grabbed Darrell Jackson instead of Travis Prentice OR Jajuan Dawson. Greg Wesley would have been the other 3rd rounder that year. Taking Brown over Samuels was ok at the time, but to pass up on Marvel Smith and Chad Clifton in the second, for Northcutt, wasn't the best decision. He could have had his tackle. Taking Lewis Sanders over Na'il Diggs will always go down as one of the true bonehead moves with us Buckeyes. I know they needed CB's which is why they went with 2 more in the 5th, but none of them amounted to squat. Kabaja-Biamilla is a name Davis must have nightmares over by passing on him 3 times then eventually went in the late 5th by none other than Ron Wolf.

1999 was an absolute disaster and right then everyone but Policy knew Dwight Clark wasn't the best evaluator. I think alot of us were screaming for Culpepper or Ricky Williams. McNabb wasn't a bad choice either, obviously. Kevin Johnson seemed like a good idea but Chris Terry and Jon Jansen must have made too much sense for Clark and Policy. McCutcheon was a good pick in the third but you're starting from scratch. Why not go for the end rusher like Joey Porter or hold off on the Johnson pick, get Jansen and grab Marty Booker in the third, or better yet, don't use your other third on another tweener, Marquis Smith and get Booker there. Drafting Rainer in the 4th didn't look half bad and there wasn't any real depth at QB after the 1st round (had they grabbed Ricky or Edgerrin instead) because Aaron Brooks went after Rainer. Still, even had they drafted a QB at #1, drafting Brooks would have been smart considering Jay Foreman was there for the grabbing in the 5th.

    What could have been:

I know it's all hindsight but it was obvious their draft boards sucked and they could have forecasted many of these picks since most of the ones I named went later on the round, after the Browns pick. Granted, had they started out right and taken Culpepper, Jon Jansen, Joey Porter, Booker, Brooks, and Foreman or even half of these guys, things would be so much brighter. With these guys, they still may have gotten the 1st pick the following year so Brown would have probably still have been the pick since Washington seemed set on Samuels and Arrington, but they could have gotten bookend tackles with Marvel Smith or Chad Clifton in the second. Darrell Jackson and Greg Wesley in the third, Diggs in the 4th and Kbaja-Biamila in the 5th. In year 3, I think they could have been somewhere around 6-7 wins planting them right in the spot to take Marcus Stroud, Casey Hampton, Steve Hutchinson...or Duece McAllister. My pick would have been McAllister even though he had possible injury concerns. So in year 3, they could have had McCallister, Kris Jenkins with the #2 pick, and William Peterson with the #3. For depth at LB, Edgerton Hartwell was an ideal pick at 4 and at RB, Derrick Blaylock in the 5th.

In 2002 (year 4), I think 10-11 wins was not out of the question. Ed Reed would have been there as was LeCharles Bentley. Reed would be the obvious pick. Had he been gone already, Bentley would be there. In round 2, it would have been cool to get Randle El. If not, Travis Fisher at CB. By this time, Davis had to know Brown was in trouble and drafting Alex Brown would have made sense with the 3rd pick. Pick Andra Davis or Najeh Davenport with the 4th.

2003..with the team assembled, 10-12 wins is not out of the question. Eric Steinbach could shore up the other guard position at #1 and Jason Witten for your TE in round 2. Reach a bit and take Asante Samuel for more CB depth in the 3rd. Jamaal Green for DE depth at 4 and Langton Moore for DT depth at 5.

This bring us to the now...Assuming Cleveland kept the team mostly together they would have had a late round pick because of the great record, Gamble or Jenkins could have been welcome additions, Keary Colbert, Darnell Dockett, or Ben Hartsock in the second and Stepanovich in the third.

So your Browns, without any free agent signings and without including most of the 5th-7th rounders that could be picked for depth, could have been:

    QB - Culpepper, Brooks
    RB - McAllister, Blaylock
    FB - Davenport
WR - Darrell Jackson, Marty Booker, Kerry Colbert
    TE - Witten
    OT - Jansen
    OG - Steinbach
    C - Stepanovich
    OG -
    OT - Marvel Smith
DE - Kbaja-Biamilla, Courtney Brown, Alex Brown, Jamaal Green
DT - Kris Jenkins, Langston Moore
    OLB - Porter
    ILB - Foreman, Hartwell
    OLB - Diggs
CB - Will Peterson, Chris Gamble, Travis Fisher, Asante Samuel
    FS - Ed Reed
    SS - Greg Wesley

This is purely hypothetical, of course, but these were what I believe is the way the drafts could have fell into place keeping pre-draft positions in mind. I think with a core like this, or even half of this, free agents would be flocking there to play.....assuming Palmer and Davis both did something miraculous, like win games.
This bring me to the most important fuck up of them all. Hiring Palmer when Mr. Andy Reid was available in 1999 to tutor Culpepper or McNabb. Cause I have this feeling that had Reid been the coach he would have never thought about taking Couch.

It is interesting to look back on all of this and wonder what might have been, but as you said, hindsight is 20-20. No one knew how these players would develop. That's why I like recruiting so much. It's like the draft only there's no picking order.

Great post, but I think it's hindsight bias to say that people were calling for Culpepper. It's fine if you weren't calling for a QB, but people forget that Culpepper went higher than he should have, and Tim Couch was pretty much the consensus number one pick. Hell, McNabb was the number three QB, behind Couch and Smith, generally, and I saw places that had him behind McNown, even. I know people who wanted McNabb or Smith, but Culpepper? Eh. I wanted the Ricky trade, frankly.

Not only is it hindsight, but there is no guarantee these players would have developed into what they are today if they had been in the Browns system under Davis.

I still have a hunch that Couch will end up being a decent QB on a pro team sometime in the future.

Well, I for one was calling for Culpepper. The only 2 questions on him was, small school and small hands. I've been following the draft very closely for years and I remember quite a few people in both the NFL and media sources saying Culpepper should have been the top pick.

As I said, Andy Reid was available to be the coach from the start. He had McNabb #1 the whole way and was ecstatic when he was there at #2. I believe he said Couch wasn't on the radar. The Vikings even made some offers to move up to take Culpepper higher then drafted him to sit a year behind George and Cunningham. I remember all kinds of questions about Couch's read and recognition skills. Some of you may remember, Akili Smith actually had a tentative deal with Cleveland to be the first pick before Policy and Clark changed their minds the last week. Culpepper was the best physical talent in the draft though.

I can see how Courtney Brown was the right pick no matter what, but I've never thought Couch's selection was the way to go.

buckeyegrad, I realize that some of these players may not be what they are now had the Browns drafted them, but they were certainly talented athletes that were available at those draft picks. If anything, quite a few of these guys could have been taken...I didn't even mention a whole lot of players that are great players now, just certain ones that were passed over for picks that didn't amount to squat. I just went for what I remember thinking back then and what would be a good way to draft for a new team. Marty Booker obviously isn't a great talent, but I listed him anyways cause he fit the need at the pick, at the time.

Are you sure they changed thier minds? I thought the Browns wanted Couch from the very beginning, but created the appearance of wanting Smith for leverage in their future contract negotiations with Couch. At least this is what I remember Smith claiming...though my memory could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure Cleveland had worked out a tentative deal with Steinberg, Smith's agent, and then reneged the last week. I do remember something about it being a leverage thing but Cleveland was dead serious about it. Something changed their minds.

buckeyefool He's back and better than ever!

The Browns did use Smith in order to get Couch. they told Couch they had a deal in place to take Smith if couch basiclly didnt sign before the draft. And in one of the few highlights of Smiths career as a bengal, I remeber after they beat the browns him thumping his chest in front of there bench.

As for all the who you could have gotten, it's really pointless, in that every team has passed up on greats and gotten little in iits place. How many teams passed on Dan Marino because he had "small hands"?

How many people passed on Jerry Rice because he hadn't placed big time college football?

Curtis Martin went in the Third round the year he came out, so how many people passed Him?

The list goes on, the point is the browns suck and now are starting to get listed by some as the worst franchise in all of pro sports

  13. GoofyBuckeye

    GoofyBuckeye Nutis Maximus

buckeyefool, it's not pointless. The point is, the Browns routinely make the wrong picks even in later rounds where an obvious talent is there to fill a need. Instead, picking countless raw talents that aren't being developed. You can point out all kinds of times where teams past on certain players, but what you cannot excuse is year after year making the wrong choice when many, many more obvious ones were sitting there. All those second round WR's makes absolutely no sense at all..didn't back then either. Something is horribly wrong in the scouting and decision area.
The Browns have had 6 drafts and they have not one star to show for it. NOT ONE! Alot of teams passed up on Curtis Martin, but how many of those teams got a stud or filled a need with a quality prospect instead? The Browns skipped over the right player(s) every round of every draft.

I wanted to show just how horrible it looked, in retrospect, and to show what moves made more sense at the time going by who was there and when. I didn't make any mention of many, many stars they passed over, just certain ones that fit their needs at the time.

Clark, Policy, and Davis was routinely making the wrong choice at the wrong time and trying to make up for it later on.

Here are all of the Browns draft picks since 1999. It's a real who's who of crap.

    matz2 Sheeeeeeeeeeeit!

Actually, Bernie Kosar tried to tell Dwight Clark and company that he liked Culpepper and McNabb better than Couch. Bernie personally evaluated all of the QBs that year and liked them the best. Obviously, the Clowns, er Browns, didn't listen to him. It's been a tough year of football.

    Geez,

Most of those guys the Clowns drafted in 199-2000 aren't even in the NFL any more.
