Buckeye Defense - 2004 (official thread)

bukIpower

Head Coach
Defense

I for one last week was very upset about our performance, but I must say we did ALOT of things better this week. One thing I noticed was our corners played bump on the recievers which I was sooo happy to see. I was very very impressed with my boy Mike D'Andrea he played lights out. He was in the backfield on every passing down it seemed like. I also just can't say enough about Carpenter and Hawk. Hawk was jus laying people out in this game especially the hit on the QB! Schlegal also played alot better today and looked very strong in the running game I'm glad he's coming around! Our Defensive line played strong but we still have alittle room for improvement with standing our ground on Misdirection plays! Overall I was very impressed with our aggresiveness with our Secondary, and also the way we got pressure today was awesome! I think Whittner, and D'Andrea/Hawk tie for defensive player of the game. Underwood and Youboty played strong as well!

Couldn't Agree more.... One thing I was happy about guys was did you notice on the screen passes was that our Db's where playing press so they was ALWAYS around the balls! we where flying around today!! if it actually wasn't for our dumb penalty from Quin Pitcock we wouldv'e prolly totally dominated this game as far as momentum and those sort of things go! WAY TO GO BUCKEYS. NICE EFFORT!

Good agressive play. Good tackling. Great adjustments after halftime. Way to force turnovers and force bad passes by getting pressure on the freshman QB. Young DBs played exceptionally well! They are only going to get better with experience. This game will help prepare for tough road games at Iowa and Purdue to come.

Until I rewatch the game I won't be able to say for sure, but at the time I thought the penalty on Pitcock was questionable at best. The guy went down a split second before Pitcock got to him.

Davis didn't even slide on the play - he fell on his no-talent ass. Pitcock did nothing wrong, and even tried to pull up. It was a terrible call.

I saw the play and I thought it was a good call. Pitcock took 3 steps and hit the guy. If he would have just bumped him it would probably have been ok, but he didnt really let up, and that's gona get called. It was a real bone head play by him. They had not moved the ball at all, and were going to punt. If he doesn't hit the QB we might pitch a shut out.

Trust me it was the right call. I mean I know Pitcock didn't mean it because its instinct that when the player goes down without contact you still think he's live. The fact is he was down and he still hit him. Oh well I mean look at Nc State's Penalties and look at ours I think we did just fine in that category. I think we have some room for improvement on our run defense but the thing I like is they don't get much on us either going to the sidelines or straight at us. Its all misdirection and they use our speed against us. In time our players will become more disciplined but until then I'll take this peformance any day by our defense. Also this is the best running back we'll face all year. MAYBE the guys from Wisconsin will be just as tough but only reason I say that is cuz of that big ole fullback Matt Beirnstien.

We still gave up way too much on the ground IMO, but we did look much improved. Our MLB and Salley still aren't tackling well. On multiple runs one of these hit the RB and they picked up quite a few yards afterward.
I agree. In 2002 the thing we did best was tackle. I don't remember seeing a game where someone missed more than 1 tackle. IMO we need to be like that again. Best tackling usually = best run defense, best run defense = best defense. Its just my opinion but I would rather stop the run stone cold and allow some passing, because passing tends to stop itself sometimes.

I agree. As much as I'd like to say the offense contributed. In which they did alittle bit because all aspects contribute to a win, but putting that aside they are not picking up there side of the bargain we only scored off a what should of been TD by "Lights out Whitner". The Defense and Nuge once again pretty much won us the game. However I have no problem in it because being our first road game I kinda expected this. I mean the running game was disappointing but there defense played well also. Alot of mental mistakes, but played well.
