Buckeye Defense - 2004 (official thread)

The DL played well early....PSU made some great adjustments and attacked the edges. We all know the DE's are shaky on containment or any open field tackling. Although a few times it was obvious that Fraser and Kudla were shaken out of their jocks...they still graded out on many of those plays by forcing the ballcarrier back inside. The DL was better today than it has been....better as in improving but not close to great or dominating.

On a side note, we gave up a number of decent gains when getting burnt on the blitz or having the wrong stunt call in place. So many have been asking Snyder to be more aggressive...you got your wish today. However, one also has to accept the times when PSU had the perfect call against the blitz.

I think they did pretty good on pass rush, and on some occasions didn't do too bad. However, they still seemed to let them have the same play OVER and OVER again. The pitch to the outside as well as not staying in their passing lanes to stop the damn QB Draw.

The special teams play was phenomenal, aside from an extremely lucky bounce. There isn't much you can do to prevent that sort of thing (it was under kicked so it could not be returned). There were multiple phenomenal returns, lots of solid 10 yard returns in bad situations, and some great plays under pressure (the line drive catch by Joe on the squib kickoff).

I agree the defensive line needs help desperately. Pitcock and Kudla made some impact plays, but the overall effect of the dline is non-existant. If you put even one good d-lineman in there from last year, I think OSU would have 3-6 more turnovers this year and would be more around 45% for 3rd down conversions allowed.

There is no reason why our DL should allow team with as many offensive struggles as PSU to run for 100 yards.

Our DL did not play as well as the score indicates.

Pitcock is beginning to separate himself from the pack, but Frazier continues to underacheive, Patterson has not become the dominate force we hoped he would be in preseason, and Kudla struggles b/c he is undersized for his position.

We're getting better, but I'll feel better when we can pressure the QB with just our front four and not relying on the blitz so much.

Defensively today I saw some good things and bad things:

The good
1)Schlegal is finally starting to catch up to the speed of Big 10 football , and he is starting to get into the flow of things.
2) Man to Man press coverage, I think this is the first time in awhile we were able to do that in the first half, and when we did it PSU wasnt effective at all throwing the ball.
3) Blitzing in the first quarter. We seemed to blitz alot in the first and somewhat throughout the game. The CB blitzes we ran seemed to work, same with bringing the Safety.

The BAd

1) Tackling, just pathetic.
2) Going away from man to man to the typical zone we run. Once we did that PSU was able to get a passing game going somewhat, plus they were able to run the ball a bit more because the safeties werent as close to the LOS to help with the run.
3) Every time Simon Fraser did something good, he would follow it up with something bad. He gets a sack, face mask. Plus I would like to see him just once not get a penalty in a game.

I think if we play like we did today next week against MSU, we are in big trouble. Msu has the type of offense that this team can not stop.

I want to know the stat of % of tackles for our line vs the LB's and 2ndary. I bet it is 10%-90%. That is unacceptable in my mind.

I would be interested if the guru's think that the % should be much more even.

Why doesn't our line make tackles???? Hell, half the time they doen't lay a hand on him.

If our defense continues to tackle the way they today it will be very ugly the next three games. How many times did we have a shot at the running back at or behind the line of scrimmage and he ended up gaining a bunch of yards. It's driving me nuts. We've been spoiled the past few years with our defensive line wrapping them up and bringing them down. Very poor tackling at times today...
