Buckeye Defense - 2004 (official thread)

You think you got it bad for Wisconsin . My father-in-law is a Wisconsin fan. IN fact he was born in Wisconsin. In the past, whenever it went bad for OSU I'd pay hell for the whole year. Imagine how nervous I am every year. Too boot he only lives a mile away from me here in Columbus. God he is a great guy but AARRRGGGGGGGG !!!
Good thing my wife is a die-hard Buckeyes fan though or we'd never of married. haha

Gosh I hear you big man, one of my cousins is a huge Notre Damn Fan and everytime OSU played them back in 1996 he gave us hell of the week (I'm glad we won those games), and another one likes Michigan and everytime We lose to them well I usually get it about every Sunday Dinner meal the next day! My family actually hates Wisconsin more than Michigan I think. I remember my grandpa always tell'n me damn them badgers they always play us tought even though they suck. I don't see bernstien hoping over any of our players though like he did against Penn State.

Great D as always. Much improved pressure by the D-line (a few were becuase of great coverage) but still much better. Agreed that the all 4 LB's looked great. Carpenter continuing to play unbelieveable. Whitner really stepped up too. A good test will be coming this week against NW and their spread. Defense wins championships in the big ten (not the pac 10 though lol).

Whitner sure has smacked some people around. I love great hits. Anybody remember that hit A.J. Hawk had on that one QB running towards the sideline marker for the first down and then WHAM !!!! He got knocked 5 feet into the sidelines !!! best hit yet for me (forget which game cuz its late and I tired) ...

You may be referring to the smack that Hawk laid on NC State QB Jay Davis. The kid should have been charged frequent flyer miles for being airborn so long.

Yes that Hit was AWESOME! I still remember the hits that the BIG KAT use to throw on people! especially that QB from Iowa! man I've never seen a player hit so hard! Anyways I think our Defense will have itself some fun this weekend. I look for big things from Donte. We all know how good our front 7 can be so I'll just leave it at that!

I think we can shut these clowns out like last year!!!. If we are on Herron like white on rice they are gonna have a longgggggg dayyyy!!!! The Dink and Dunk crap may work the first series but once we adjust it will be shut down!!! BTW the will be in 4 down terrirtory inside the 35 because their kicker sucks!!!!!

Well what can I say we where taken to the wood shed. I never expected this, but who really didn't feel one of these coming sooner or later. I think the weak link of the night was by far the defense. Everytime they got the ball I looked over at my dad and just said "HERE WE GO" (I'm 19 years old). I Never ever thought I'd say that about our defense. Let alone our offense.

1. Rush Defense- Remember the saying HOLY BUCKEYE from 2002, well I got my own one for this one HOLY HELL. This team exposed us. I for one , have already started to wonder what the heck Simon Frasier is doing out there? I have no doubt he deserves to play but this is not the Simon I'm use to see'n. The rushing defense was actually good in the early part, but as the game went on it was either a QB draw or a Draw to Herron doing the same dumb stretch play.

2. Screen Play- I don't mean to get on the topic again boyz but does the marshall game recall anything? They play the screen play horridly. I'm very shocked at how everytime they ran it we acted like we've never seen it before? They do the absolute opposite thing that would stop the Screen pass and I really don't know why they do it? I have no words right now.

3. Bump and Run- This is the key to stopping the screen pass. I want to ask you guys something , how many times did NW throw the ball over 20 yards in the air? ZERO, so why did we play a 2 deep zone the whole game? I don't understand it, if they aren't go'n deep why put so much emphasis on it? The OSU defense should with their speed be able to play man to man or bump coverage if they pleased.

4. Horrible Tackling- I don't know if I've ever seen such poor tackling out of our group the past 4 years? I just don't know guys?

5. Coach- Where was the so called adjustments we're so accustomed to see'n? We did the same thing in the second half that we did in the first half? What? did we think they'd change the way they played or something? This In my opinion was by far the most dissappointing thing.

6. Same play- Anyone notice the same play on third down and longs and third down and shorts? On Third and Long they'd throw that comeback route to the outside, and also on the Third and Short they'd do that little 5 yard slant. Again there's just no reason why after the first 2-3 times why we shouldn't stop it. Unexcusable.

I don't really have any words right now. Besides, I feel happy for NW because they honestly beat the piss outta our defense and our D-Coordinator. I will say that this is by far the worst defense I've seen from OSU in the past 4 years. I know we've been spoiled but this team is NO different. I know we're young but that was North Western guys. I have NO DOUBT this defensive is still capable of being possibly better than most in the nation but we have some work to do. If we dont' get it straight we'll be in for a long Big Ten season because the teams only run harder and eventually Throw faster (Purdue/Michigan) than North Western. I know this is after a tough loss but I just don't see many positives about what we did on this side of the ball. We have alot of work to do. NO better time than next week with Wisconsin.

GO BUCKS!!!

Can't expect the defense to carry the entire load every game, especially when they're running around trying to cover a spread team and then have to go right back out there after 4 plays for an entire half. As I said in my other post in the other thread, Tressel has gotten to the point where he has downplayed the offense completely, relying entirely on the defense and the kickers, which won't always work, even against teams that can be described as solid at best. The O has to bear some of the burden, or you turn into Vanderbilt of the 1990s or Penn State in 2004.

buki you and i discussed this once before about bump and run so I won't go into that but frazier is average at best but put scott, anderson, smith beside him he becomes all world because they focused on those three. It's plain and simple our dline and oline have to set the tone for the game and they don't period.

We were CLEARLY the more talented team last night...that means that the only way we lose is if we get beat in these three areas. 1. Preparation 2. Execution and 3. Heart. IMO we got beat handily in all three areas. The coaches didn't make neccessary adjustments at half time because their offense was more unstoppable in the second half. We got ZERO pressure on the quarterback. We refused to blitz or run any variation of a vanilla zone coverage defense that allowed Basanez to sit back in the pocket and carefully dissect us. Our defensive lines the last two years have been ELITE...this year they are simply good. Blockers are making it to the second level and causing our linebackers to be late to the ball because they are fighting through blocks. Obviously tackling (execution) was a large problem last night...but after the first half, you have to make NU do something different by mixing some blitzes and forcing additional protection. This would also help remedy the problem with Wildcats favorite run play...the draw. I thought we were way out-prepared, out-executed and they clearly had more heart. It speaks volumes to our raw talent that the game was close. I understand execution isn't always there...but we should never get as blatantly outcoached as we did yesterday. Snyder and Tressel put together a poor defensive game plan and were too stubborn to admit they were wrong by changing it at the half. 90% of our games the coaches (Other than Bollman) do a fabulous job...not last night.

We didn't get shit for pressure on Banasez, or whatever his name is. He seemed to always scramble away from Fraser...it seemed like Fraser was in the backfield chasing him all day but never caught him. But at least he was in the backfield...I don't know where the rest of the DL was. Everett's missed INT on their first drive of the game hurt us also, giving them three points and big momentum. Also, Snyder needs to get his ass up in the booth where he can see what is going on and do his coordinating from there. Misdirection plays killed us yesterday.

The continued burning that we took on second down blitzes just amazed me. Snyder needed to change the calls around. They seemed to know what was coming. I noticed that we were very soft in our zone pass coverages as well. We didn't seem to have our eyes on the ball. Whitner got hit in the back of the head with a pass that he could have intercepted if he wasn't just face guarding the receiver.
