Buckeyeplanet Chat Room Online Now

kn1f3party

Hall of Fame
We now have a chat room for users to socialize day, evening, night, whenever they feel like it! See below for instructions!

Beginners:

To access the chat room, simply click the 'Chat' link next to 'Arcade' on the top-right side of the page.

Type in a desired username--9 character limit.

Press 'Connect.'

* We will not be able to set up user permissions for users that use this method as there is no way to identify who you really are.

Advanced:

The chat room is a channel on the IRC network EFnet. The preferred method for connecting to IRC networks is a standalone client. There are clients for any number of platforms and operating systems. I have used xchat on Linux, mIRC on Windows, and yaIRC on Android. These are all very good in there own way but you are welcome to try another.

There are advantages to these clients. They allow you to persistently save your settings, automatically connect and join our channel, as well as offer some convenient scripting capabilities. If you are relatively new to IRC, these are still quite simple to use as long as you use the following information:

IRC Server: irc.efnet.org OR irc.efnet.info
Channel: #buckeyeplanet

BrutusBot:

Most IRC networks people are familiar with utilize services so that users can register their screen names and/or chat rooms for protection from other users. EFnet is somewhat unique in the sense that they do not have these services. To facilitate some of this functionality and to maintain the #buckeyeplanet channel, we will be using a bot: BrutusBot to be exact.

BrutusBot is being extended to offer a lot of great features like Ohio State trivia right in the chat room. But as of now BrutusBot is there to control user access and protect the channel. All users should identify themselves with BrutusBot! By doing so, we are able to set up user access. To do so is quite simple, type /msg brutusbot hello.

IRC:

For those that aren't familiar with IRC concepts. Here is a quick and dirty run through. There is a lot more to it, but this will help you understand what it is, why it has stood the test of time, and why it is an excellent method for socializing with fellow members of the site.

IRC is a real-time, synchronous chat. Servers exist that users can connect to from all over the world and create their own chat rooms. When you first connect to a server, you can't really talk to anyone except through private messaging. IRC allows users to create their own channels on a whim. Say you're talking with 3 or 4 others and it is in a room with a few other people. You can relocate to your own channel that you create. When you type a message, everyone in the channel will see it. But it also provides the capability to instant message individual users. IRC has a lot of additional tools as well, there are file sharing services, streaming services, etc.

It is old! It has been around for a very long time, but still has a surprisingly large user base. For every specific topic of interest there is probably a server/channel combination that will accommodate users in conversing about it. IRC is better than your run-of-the-mill methods for hosting chat servers because it utilizes a network of servers that are all synchronized. When traffic is heavy on one, users connect to another. As long as you're all in the same #channel, it doesn't matter which room you're in--you can talk! Secondly, it offers a lot of structure that just works. Rooms can be made password protected, private, or even moderated which require a certain user level to speak to the room. Disruptive users can be kicked out of rooms or even banned to prevent them from returning.

IRC is fast. There is low overhead involved with communicating through IRC so when you type something, everyone sees it. It is truly real-time.

There are scripts / the ability to script. You can truly customize your experience in IRC without disrupting others by scripting for your favorite client. Intimidated by all of that? You can try one of the many scripts that are available for your favorite client that provides extensions and tools you otherwise wouldn't have.

i just tried it.
gets stuck on "connecting to server"

It should try another time. There is a little bit of a timeout that has to pass before it will. The clients do this to prevent you from getting banned fro flooding the server.

If this isn't the case let me know. If you get some kind of red error message let me know.

this is what i got this time

*** Banned: Temporary D-line 1440 min. - (r32/37) XDCC Bots (2011/4/1 16.13)

i just click the chat button next to arcade, type in a name, and click connect

This is one of the problems with having to use Mibbit. It uses a proxy so all of its users have similar addresses. If someone is using it inappropriately it can disrupt legitimate use. Usually waiting a minute and trying again works. I'm still reviewing other options.

Also, for anyone popping in to the chat: let yourself lurk.

What often happens is someone will log in to a room like this, say to themselves "hey no conversation going on here," and then log right back out. Five minutes later somebody does the same thing. And again and again. If they had lurked, they'd all be there chatting.

Not sure if that has happened here yet. Just a tip. :)
