BuckeyePlanet How-2.0: Adjusting Settings and Preferences

    How to change your settings and preferences:
    On the brand new BuckeyePlanet, accessing and customizing your settings and preferences couldn't be easier. There are more ways to customize than ever before though, so this guide is meant to help with understanding all of the options available to you.

    You can access settings for various aspects of your experience on BuckeyePlanet through your username link, which is located next to the Inbox link in the upper right-hand corner of the page. You can either click on the link to go straight to your Personal Details page where there is a menu of options on the left side of the page, or you can hover over the link with your cursor and view the same menu of options without having to navigate to a new page.

    CP left menu.png

    Once you are able to view the menu, you will see that there are several areas where you can make adjustments. All in all, it's similar to the UserCP on the old version of BuckeyePlanet. There are some new options available though, and the following will hopefully help explain them...

    Includes various options such as show/hide your online status, show/hide your date of birth, and the ability to restrict who is able to view your personal details or start a Private Conversation with you. Unlike privacy settings on other sites *cough*Facebook*cough*, on this version of BuckeyePlanet they are easy to find and fairly easy to understand.

    This category deals with browsing preferences. You have the ability to change the Style or "skin" of BuckeyePlanet here, similar the way you could on the old version of BuckeyePlanet. At launch there will only be one Style available, but as more options are made ready you can select your favorite and use it. Your selection is tied to your account, so it will automatically implement that style as long as you are logged in, no matter what device you are browsing from. On the old version of BP you had to set the Style on each individual device you browsed from. Now it is much easier!

    Other items of note in the Preferences category are the settings to "Automatically watch threads that you create or when you reply..." and to "receive email notifications of replies". This is an area where you will want to start to carefully consider how many alerts you want to receive from BuckeyePlanet, and of what kind. The new version of BP has a robust alert system that can help keep you up to date on the content you care about the most. If you don't set things up how you want them though, it can be very easy to get buried in notifications. That's where the next group of settings comes in.

    Alert Preferences
    You have the ability on the new version of BuckeyePlanet to receive Alerts on nearly every type of action that takes place in the forums. This can include being notified when someone "likes" one of your posts (rep!), quotes you, tags you in a post, or interacts with your personal profile. You can also receive alerts on Sportsbook or Pick'em events. You can choose to receive alerts for as many or as few things as you want.

    Not at the moment. Before other than the [Mark May] one that kind of thing was based on the Style that you chose. Right now there is only one Style available. Plus, if I had to guess the [Hoke] one is set up the same as the [Mark May] one.

    I'm not a fan of the [Hoke] thing myself. I can see the novelty, but sometimes I just want to drop a few good f-bombs with out that fat loser getting in the way.

    User-set values are not currently available. The low limit is temporary; it helped the migration.

    You should be seeing 15 per page. If you saw 10, then it was probably the last page in the thread.

    As Deety pointed out, we need to equal the standard view for the old vB structures for the time being. In a nutshell, there's a very complicated process that allows all of our old links to make it to the new threads, which are completely different.

    Essentially we:
    • Had a vB 3.8.7pl3 URL, which was rewritten to a;
    • vbSEO word-based URL, which is now rewritten to a;
    • XF standard URL, which is rewritten to a;
    • XF friendly word-based URL.
    Each step defined by its own unique rules.

    Everything at every step along the way has to remain valid, lol. So we'll up from 15 to something more like 20 in the future, but after most of the old links around the web have either decayed or been updated.

    This move was very complicated, but we had some outstanding people (both here in our staff and hired from the Xenforo staff) who all played important parts in making what seemed impossible ultimately possible.

    The Hoke bit was a joke, we'll probably just leave Mark May.

    So, we will be able to change the sort order, so that most recent messages appear first?
