It was a game played against stygian black skies, played in a cold. unrelenting rain,. Played against the background of urgings from a crowd that had no more quit in it than the home team on the field ... it was a game dominated by defense, it was a game of redemption for a season thwarted by injuries, for a team maligned by the home town press, let alone the national media as under-performing.

It was a game where I was in the stands (great viewing position 35 yd line), no cover and drenched, watching as the Buckeyes upset the then #1 Hawkeyes

For all of the above I've got to be the sole (to this point) vote for the '85 victory over Iowa.

I gotta go with the Fiesta Bowl. That game couldn't have been scripted better by Hollywood.

- Media-friendly defending national champs come in with a 34 game win streak.
- Over-achieving blue collar team comes in as a huge underdog.
- Defending champs jump out early only to find the underdogs have a mean-as-hell defense.
- The underdogs take the lead thanks to the emotional leader on the defense who came back to college just to win a NC.
- The controversial running back making the play of a lifetime by stripping the ball after a HORRIBLE interception.
- The underdogs take control of the game, but the champs fight back by 1) getting away with a defensive holding call, 2) getting a huge punt return in the final 2 minutes, 3) squeaking a FG through as time expires.
- The first OT: 4th and 14, the PI call, premature fireworks,...
- The second OT: The hit on Dorsey, the goal line stand - top offense in the country and top defense in the country. Which team wants it more?

How can any game come close???

Although I loved the Fiesta Bowl, I went with the 97 Rose Bowl against ASU.

A bit tough to explain on why I chose that, but being 15 at the time and never witnessed a big Rose Bowl victory that I could yet remember, it was just the perfect game for me to witness it.

It was the most satisfying for me, and a great game as well with Jake Plummer and ASU coming back to make it a 17-14 ASU lead, only to have Germaine and the Bucks make a comeback of their own and win the game.

It's just a nudge over the Fiesta Bowl, because as satisfying as winning as national title was, I was just glad that Ohio State was there to be honest(not that I expected them to lose, but we were 14 point underdogs and no one gave us a chance.)

I'd much rather have a national title, but my first witnessed Rose Bowl victory over ASU along with the kind of game it was just mkaes it a tad more satisfying for me personally.

I'm with Yertle. Winning the NC was absolutely incredible. Ohio State isn't even supposed to CONTEND with Miami for winning that game. All we heard about was how BADLY Miami will make Ohio State look. Many "experts" didn't even think Ohio State was the best team in the Big Ten, let alone the country. And when they start the game off by sacking Dorsey, you could just tell it was going to be awesome.

Combine that with how many plays could have been the last play of the game? Five, I believe:
1. Last-second Field Goal by Miami to tie the game and send it into overtime.
2. Fourth and 14, completion to Jenkins for first down.
3. Fourth and 3, Gamble interfered in endzone (I still think it should have been Defensive Holding, NOT interference, but I'm not complaining).
4. Miami had Fourth and 1, or 2, or 3.. something around there.. completion to Winslow for first down.
5. Finally, THE last play, Fourth and goal on the one, Grant blitzes in from the end, untouched, and gets Dorsey to heave a desperation pass which is incomplete.

All that, after many believed Ohio State shouldn't be in the game...

It was 2002 beating Michigan... no doubt about it.

The question is what was most SATISFYING!!! While it was great winning the national title in what will go down as the best game of all time, I had about 10 heart attacks and I was more relieved it was over and that we won. And to have the game always questioned because of a slow flag slightly lowers the overall satisfication measure.

But for pure satisfaction and killing all the ghosts of perfect seasons lost in the past I just felt at ease watching Mo Hall receiving the pitch to the outside for the TD, watching Navare's failed attempts at hail marys and then watching the interception. It was more than pure joy. It was slaying the demons of perfect seasons of the 1990s when something would always go wrong.

The Fiesta Bowl was gravy and I would have been satisfied no matter the outcome. But watching us finally beat that school up north in my lifetime with something on the line made everything better.

I was edging toward The Game in 2002. I don't have any reasons not already stated. But the Fiesta Bowl was just amazing. I stayed up for a long time that night watching the "expert" commentary on ESPN. Hearing the guys who picked Miami to win try to save face by talking about the awesome Ohio State defense, or talk about how "Tressel Ball" was executed perfectly, or whatever the hell else filled up the next 5-6 hours.

Wins over Michigan, and the country says, "Ok - Ohio State beat Michigan." That win in that Fiesta Bowl, and the country says, "Ohio State is the National Champion."

These are just the plays where a missed FG, incomplete pass, or a run for no gain would have ended the game. Every play for tOSU in the first OT, and every play for Miami in the 2nd OT "could have been the last play of the game", to use your words. Whenever the first team scores in an OT period, any turnover when the second team has the ball ends the game.

I think I now have the incentive to watch that game again, since I've forgotten what that number of potential game-ending plays was, but I know it was at least in the teens.

Edit - I'm not sure if first-possession plays of each OT are also potential game-enders. If the defense scores, do they actually make that team take the field for their OT possession and take a knee 4 times?

BB73 - You're right - I was only counting the plays where the offense had to accomplish something more than simply not turning the ball over (a first down or a touchdown was needed), or a field goal was needed to extend the game.

I've wondered that, too. I don't have the answer.

Here's another OT question (not to hijack the thread):

Let's say my team is on defense first. My team intercepts the ball, and attempts to return for the touchdown. My DB returns it to the 20-yard line, where your player pushes him out of bounds, or tackles him, or whatever. Normally, if my team stops your team, I get the ball at the 25 yard line. But, in this case, do I get it at the 20?

Nope. 25 yard line. It's kind of like intercepting a 2-point conversion and returning it to the 1 yard line. No good. Kick off time. Sorry for trying (Katzenmoyer, for example).

My Games

I was at the 85 Iowa game and I was at the NC Championship Game. I guess I picked the Iowa game because I was 15 at the time and that win just made my life. It was the most exciting thing ever.

The NC game was just incredibly gratifying and satisfying. It made me proud to be a Buckeye for all of these years and still gives me incredible optimism for the future of our program. What a game! Man there were some of the most viscious hits in that game. Allen--->McGahee. That hit on Dorsey. Interceptions out the Wazoo. I'm still awed by how fast that game played. It was one play from going either way.

This one was easy for me. January 3rd, 2003: the Greatest Game ever played.

My reasons? First the 'con' against voting for the '02 scUM game:
1. We've beaten scUM before, and we'll beat them again. It wasn't the first (or last) time I've seen OSU beat dUMb, regardless of how satisfying the '02 win was.

2. The game itself was more of a grind than a edge of your seat win. The players obviously thought different, but as a fan, you basically sat there with an attitude of, 'Lets get through this and not blow it.' Once we got the lead, my eyes were more focused on the clock than the field.

3. Historically, had we lost to Miami the next game, the scUM win wouldn't hold as much water in my heart. It needed the validation in the next game, the '14-0' to put the cherry on its sundae.

And now, why I chose Miami:

First off, I was living in Miami at the time and got so much shit shoved in my face because the 'Canes were unbeatable, and we were 'no different' than Nebraska in the previous year .. I loved throwing that back in their face.

Secondly, to anyone who's followed the Bucks for a period of time, the 90's were as heartbreaking (over and over again) as any team in Pro or College Sports. Finally winning, and finally getting to say, "We're the best" after all the almost-wins, the heartbreaks to scUM and Michigan State was more gratifying than I can even describe.

Thirdly, it was the best game I've ever seen. I was on the absolute edge of my seat for 4+ hours (whatever it was).

Fourth, how many teams can say that they capped off a 14-0 season (unprecedented) with an incredible OT victory against a seemingly unbeatable team riding a 31 game win streak, as a 14 point underdog, in a game that can only be described as a roller coaster ride?

Now THAT's pretty damn satisfying ..

The Buffalo Bills might disagree with that statement, but I'm willing to comment on it based solely on Buckeye history. The 1990's were not as heartbreaking as the 1970's to this Buckeye fan. Time to look back at some painful history once again.

In 1973, we spent 8 weeks at #1, dropping after a tie on the road when our QB had a broken thumb and completed zero passes in The Game. We then beat the defending NC Trojans 42-21 in the Rose bowl to finish #2.

In 1974, we spent 7 weeks at #1, dropping after a road 'loss' than took the referees and Big-10 commissioner Wayne Duke over 30 minutes to determine who won the game after we ended up in the end zone on the game's last play. Oklahoma won 1/2 the NC, avoiding a possible bowl game loss because of probation. USC won the UPI NC by defeating us in the Rose Bowl on a bomb in the last 2 minutes, followed by an unbelievable diving catch on the 2-point conversion. This, unfortunately for me, occurred right in front of my 2nd row seats behind the USC band in the corner of the end zone. If Shelton Diggs didn't make that great catch, a recovery of an on-side kick was probably all we needed to win the UPI NC.

In 1975, we were #1 in every AP poll taken during the months of October, November, and December. We went out to LA to play UCLA. No problem, we'd already beat them 41-20 that year in LA. Then came what was for me the most painful loss in Buckeye history.

So for 3 years in a row, we were voted #1 in the polls the most times each year, but never won the NC. We also lost NC's in the Rose Bowls following the 1970 and 1979 seasons. So in ten years, we lost 5 NC's, one due to a tie in AA, and 4 in the Rose Bowl.

Now let's look at the 1990's.

In 1993, the highest we got in the polls was #3.

In 1995, we got up to #2, but without the BCS in place, even if we had gone undefeated that year we would have remained #2 to that powerhouse Nebraska team, without a chance to nail them in a Bowl game.

In 1996, we were #2 before the slip, and would have needed a Rose Bowl win followed by a Florida revenge win against FSU to get #1, even if we had won The Game. Would Florida have had enough motivation to beat FSU if they knew that an undefeated tOSU team would be #1 if Florida downed FSU? Who knows.

In 1997, we got up to #4 before The Game. If we had won it, we wouldn't have been able to get around a supposedly undefeated Nebraska team. (I say that because of the kicked ball on the last play of regulation against Mizzou, in which Nebraska scored the tying TD).

In 1998, we spent 10 weeks at #1, before a shanked punt turned around the MSU game we were leading 24-9 in the middle of the 3rd quarter at home. Now that loss was painful, as was the BCS decision to send Florida State to play the very lucky Tennessee team that year.

The 1990's has some great Buckeye teams that had some chances at NC's, but those years were not near as 'heartbreaking' as the 1970's. For me, as I've said before, the 2002 NC made up for the near misses in the 1990's, but for what happened back in the 1970's I still need some more satisfaction.

I did vote for the 2003 Fiesta bowl, since it brought the NC I'd waited 30 years for.

bb73: "The 1990's were not as heartbreaking as the 1970's to this Buckeye fan."

I was born in '75, so I can't compare the 90's with the 70's. I'll have to take your word for it. I always thought that an undefeated OSU team only lost to scUM 4 times (and three of them occurred in the 90's). So if that does anything to favor my point, I'll take it.

I will comment on your takes on the 90's, however:

"In 1993, the highest we got in the polls was #3."

1993, was in my eyes, the nail in the "Cooper can't beat Michigan" coffin. He was 0-5-1 going into that game (or 0-4-1), I can't recollect, but you could argue that scUM had the better team in each of those seasons & Cooper shouldn't have beaten them anyway.

In '93, OSU fell asleep and tied Whisky, but was WAY better than an unranked scUM team and still got pounced in the Shit House, 28-0. To me, that game did more to make the "Cooper/scUM" mystique than anything. And it would haunt the program for the rest of his tenure. And, to add insult to injury, OSU (because of the no-repeat rules at the time) were co-Big Ten Champions & fell all the way down to the Holiday Bowl.

"In 1995, we got up to #2, but without the BCS in place, even if we had gone undefeated that year we would have remained #2 to that powerhouse Nebraska team, without a chance to nail them in a Bowl game."

The 1995 Buckeyes (most people don't know this) was the most decorated college football team in history. I agree with you, but I think it'd be hard for the voters to not give this team a share of the Title w/ Nebraska, had they not run the table as well. It doesn't take the pain away from the scUM AND Tennessee (a far inferior team) losses that season.

"In 1996, we were #2 before the slip, and would have needed a Rose Bowl win followed by a Florida revenge win against FSU to get #1, even if we had won The Game."

This is where we disagree. Florida was a lock in that revenge game, and we would've won a consensus National Title out of the Rose Bowl.

"In 1997, we got up to #4 before The Game."

National Championship aspirations aside, this season was painful because we couldn't turn the tables and smash scUM's Title run to pieces. That would've been sweet.

"In 1998, we spent 10 weeks at #1, before a shanked punt turned around the MSU game we were leading 24-9 in the middle of the 3rd quarter at home."

I don't think I have to comment on this one. Agreed.

See Penn State 1994. Perfect record and no NC. And the 1995 Nebraska team was more highly regarded than the '94 squad. Here's the 1995 poll before taken just before The Game.

Following that poll, Nebraska played twice. They beat Oklahoma 37-0, and then dismantled Florida 62-24 in the NC Fiesta Bowl. There's simply no way in hell that we would have gone around them in either poll.
