Steve Caravati was 3-for-4 to lead Ohio State to a 8-0 win.

    May 2, 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ohio State belted out 13 hits to beat Indiana 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Sembower Field to gain its first Big Ten series sweep of the season. The win also was the team's fifth in a row, which is a season long, and the team's first shutout of the season. The Buckeyes now find themselves in a tie for first place atop the Big Ten standings.

It was the first sweep on the road for Ohio State since beating Purdue four times last season. Ohio State out-hit the Hoosiers 54-28 in getting the sweep and outscored them 36-12. It was the first time Indiana had been swept at home since the 1986 season.

The Buckeyes plated one run in the first inning, capitalizing on a one-out infield single by Jacob Howell (Fr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland). He stole second before Indiana starter Brian Lortz walked Steve Caravati (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). After a fly out by Jedidiah Stephen (So., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), Ronnie Bourquin (Fr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) delivered a single through the left side and into left field where it was scooped up and thrown home trying to get Howell, who beat out the throw. The ball skidded past catcher Cody Wargo and the runners were able to advance an extra base as leftfielder Kevin Mahar was charged with an error.

In the second, Ohio State turned a lead-off walk by Paul Farinacci (Jr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) into its second run of the game to take a 2-0 lead. He moved to second on an error on Lortz trying to field a sacrifice bunt by Mike Rabin (Jr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East). Derek Kinnear (Sr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) followed with another bunt for sacrifice, moving both Farinacci and Rabin into scoring position. Drew Anderson (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) delivered a third straight sacrifice, though this time it was a fly to center that was able to score Farinacci.

For the third time of the game in four innings, the Buckeyes got their lead-off runner, Brett Garrard (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), on base, this time by a walk from Indiana reliever Steve Nielsen. Farinacci singled through the left side to move Garrard to second and then the pair was bunted into scoring position by Rabin. Garrard scored on a sac fly by Kinnear to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.

Three more runs scored in the fifth inning as Ohio State took a commanding 6-0 lead. Caravati led off the inning with an infield single to short and then moved to second on a ground out by Stephen Bourquin
