Brown designated; Fryer new No. 2 catcher

By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 06/25/11 9:30 PM ET

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates made a somewhat unexpected roster move on Saturday when, just a little more than an hour before first pitch, the team announced it had designated catcher Dusty Brown for assignment. Eric Fryer, who split time at Double-A and Triple-A this year, was called up to join the big league club and serve as the team's second catcher. "We appreciate Dusty Brown's efforts, but believe that Eric Fryer has a chance to help this Major League club more than Dusty Brown at this point in time," general manager Neal Huntington said. "This move is the move we feel is best for this club at this time. We will continue to look for logical, rational ways to improve our club."

<LI class=first>HomeDavid Ortiz on Collision With Pirates Catcher Eric Fryer: 'I'm a Beast' (Video)

by NESN Video on Sun, Jun 26, 2011 at 7:49PM 3

Do you like this story?

http://www.nesn.com/2011/06/david-ortiz-on-collision-with-pirates-catcher-eric-fryer-im-a-beast.htmlAt 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, David Ortiz is a big guy. There's no way around it.
There was also no way around Pirates catcher Eric Fryer, who was making his first major league start, during the seventh inning of the Red Sox' 4-2 win on Sunday. Therefore, there was some contact.
With the Sox leading 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Kevin Youkilis hit a fly ball to right-center field. Right fielder Garrett Jones fielded it and came up firing, sending a one-hopper to Fryer, who braced himself for a hustling Ortiz.
There wasn't a tremendous amount of contact on the play, but Ortiz sent Fryer falling backward. The Pirates catcher held onto the ball, but home plate umpire Greg Gibson said Ortiz got his leg in ahead of the tag.
Ortiz spoke jokingly about the collision after the game, saying he felt fine after it.
"I'm a beast," he said.
Ortiz also added the Fryer "took it like a man."
To hear what else Ortiz had to say about the collision following Sunday's win, check out the video above.

Fryer goes into the fire, proves worth

PITTSBURGH - Eric Fryer saw the handwriting on the wall.

When the Pirates rookie backup catcher entered the clubhouse Sunday, he saw his name on the lineup card that was hanging on the wall leading into the main dressing area. But this time, it wasn't marked in a slot with the reserves; he would be the starting catcher in the series finale against St. Louis.

Fryer's journey to the majors this year has been rapid, if not unexpected. He began the year at Class AA Altoona, but because of a run of injuries that took down the Pirates' other catchers, the 25-year-old Fryer found himself in the majors on June 26.

Just last year, he was playing for the Pirates' high-Class A affiliate in Bradenton, Fla. Sunday was just his seventh major-league appearance and fifth start.

"I want to get everyone energized," Fryer said about his role. "Day games a lot of times can zap energy out of you pretty quick. You want to keep the pace going, you want to keep the starting pitcher ... feeling confident and just run the pitching staff as best as possible."

? Position: Catcher.

? Born: Aug. 26, 1985, Columbus, Ohio.

? Family: Wife (Allison), son (Caleb).

? College: Ohio State.

? Attributes: 6-2, 215/bats and throws right.

? Experience: Third season in the Pittsburgh organization, sixth overall; drafted in the 10th round by Milwaukee in 2007.

? Last season: Spent most of season in minors with Triple-A Indians and Double-A Altoona (Pa.), hitting .273 with seven homers and 27 RBIs; hit .269 in 10 major league games with Pirates.

? This season: Hitting .197 with five doubles in 22 Triple-A games.

? Like to keep it tight on the hair? "I always buzzed it. It got to the point where I just started going with a razor in the offseason."

? Is wearing "Tools of Ignorance" as demanding and painful as they say? "I don't know; at times it can be. My knees are OK. I'm pretty lucky. The foul balls and the back swings kind of hurt after a while, but it goes with the territory."

? Is that a bad day, catching one in the wrong spot? "Yeah, it can be. It's definitely a bad couple of minutes.

? Does it bother you if your pitcher has a shutout in the ninth and shakes you off? "No, because I'm guessing if he's got a shutout, he knows what he wants to do."

? Most memorable at-bat? "My first at-bat in the big leagues last year. I was going against Andrew Miller. It was a fly out to right field, but just stepping into the box, it was pretty crazy. I had caught an inning or two before that, but definitely the first plate appearance."

? Years from now, will it be a warning-track shot? "But still caught, though. If it was a hit, you could change it all you wanted to."

? What did he throw you? "I got a fastball away. I hit it OK."

? So you're a Buckeye. You like coach Urban Meyer? "I talked to Urban this offseason. I was working out in the Woody Hayes (Athletic Center) and he was doing some exercise and some laps. He played two years of minor league baseball in the Braves organization. He said he couldn't hit a curveball, so he decided to get into something else."

Pirates add two to roster
June 26, 2012
By Bill Brink / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

PHILADELPHIA -- The Pirates added catcher Eric Fryer and infielder Drew Sutton to the active roster before tonight's game.

To make room, they optioned left-hander Doug Slaten and infielder Matt Hague.

Fryer joined the roster to provide a backup catcher while Rod Barajas recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee, sustained in a play at the plate during Monday's game. The organization must remove a player from the 40-man roster before tonight's game to make room for Fryer.
