The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled first baseman Matt Hague from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. The club also optioned catcher Eric Fryer to Indianapolis to make room on the 25-man roster.

Hague has played 28 games for the Pirates this season, batting .235 with seven RBI before being sent to the minors on June 28.

Fryer appeared in just four games for Pittsburgh and was 1-for-3 at the plate in three pinch-hit appearances.

It appears the Twins plan to keep backup catcher Eric Fryer on their 40-man roster beyond the Nov. 20 deadline in advance of the Rule 5 draft.

Fryer, 28, has signed a split contract that will pay him $515,000 if he's in the majors next season. Fryer's 2013 contract called for him to be paid at a pro-rated portion of $500,000 in the majors, but he wasn't called up from Triple-A Rochester until September.

The former Ohio State standout went 5 for 13 (.385) with a home run and four RBIs in September. In 65 games with the Red Wings, Fryer had a .339 on-base percentage and five homers in 243 plate appearances.

Fryer, who receives high marks for his defensive work and handling of pitchers, is playing for his fourth different organization since the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him in the 10th round in 2007. He also spent time with the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, taking a combined 30 big-league at-bats with the Pirates in 2011 and 2012.

He is one of four catchers on the Twins' 40-man roster with this week's move of Joe Mauer to first base. The others are veteran Ryan Doumit, Chris Herrmann and Josmil Pinto.

I lived in Haverfield with a couple guys from Reynoldsburg back in the day.

As for Fryer, it was bound to be PIT or STL, again.

agreed. Fryer was the starting Freshmen Catcher at RBurg my senior year. in hindsight maybe he shouldve been the starting varsity catcher that year
