Oden “The Great” Brings His Talent To The Jiangsu Dragons

The CBA has been an ideal place for talented yet inconsistent foreign players to prove themselves again. There are many teams out there that are willing to throw big money and minutes at those who, for one reason or another, didn’t survive NBA. If it works out, some NBA team in need of talent might just sign with the player in the middle of the season after the shorter CBA regular season is over. If not, the player can still walk away with a decent salary.

Take last season’s Michael Beasley for an example. After finishing a stunning regular season (averaging 28.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.9 steals) as a Shanghai Shark, Beasley signed a 10-day contract to come back to the Heat, and eventually stayed for the rest of the season. Now it seems like Beasley’s former teammate at the Heat, Greg Oden, will follow suit, as the Jiangsu Dragons announced on Wednesday that they had signed the No.1 pick from the 2007 NBA draft.

Chinese basketball fans have nicknamed Oden “The Great”, for the dominance he had shown inside the paint on both ends of the floor during his college career, and subsequently, his first season with the Blazers. Yet since then, he has fallen from the path to superstardom due to a number of devastating knee injuries. After a long recovery, his return to the NBA as a member of the Miami Heat in 2013-2014 showed glimpses of the greatness he once possessed, but not enough to convince any NBA team to give him a contract after the season.

According to Sports Illustrated and RealGM.com, Oden tried to return for yet another time as he reportedly worked out with the Grizzles, the Hornets, and the Mavericks during this spring and the offseason. Then a few days ago, Jiangsu suddenly announced that “The Great” will bring his talent to the Middle Kingdom next season. The exact detail of his contract is unknown at the moment, but Linjie Shi, the manager for the Jiangsu Dragons, revealed that Oden’s salary this season will be higher than the salary he made with the Heat, which was 1.03 million dollars, according to Chengdu Daily. It’s not hard to see why Oden decides to sign with Jiangsu, given that they have promised him more minutes and money than he’ll possibly get in the NBA.

Greg Oden Actually Looked Pretty Great In His Chinese League Tryout

Greg Oden flew to China for his tryout as his team was worried about his health condition. Wearing a Knee Brace, Greg was able to complete all workouts and went through 2 days of Full Court Scrimmages against his teammates. After his medical and holding his own during his tryout the team announced his signing right after the last quarter of scrimmages. He flies back home to the USA and the team expects him to arrive on October 1st for training camp and get in shape for the upcoming 2015/16 CBA Season.

Take this all with a huge grain of salt since the competition he was facing wasn’t even in the same stratosphere as NBA talent, but Greg Oden actually looked like a dominant big man in his tryout video for the Jinagsu Dragons that was recently uploaded to Youtube.

Oden signed with the Dragons earlier this month and he can be seen in the video doing things like making actual post moves, running the floor, knocking down free throws, and even finishing above the rim on several occasions. Also, none of those things sent him sprawling to the floor in agony.

Greg Oden Drops 23 Points, 14 Rebounds in China Debut

Former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden may be one of the biggest busts in NBA history, but he's still having fun playing basketball.

The big man had his NBA career derailed by multiple knee injuries, which saw him miss three straight seasons from 2010-11 to 2012-13. He was last seen in a Miami Heat uniform in 2014.

This offseason, Oden signed in China with the Jiangsu Dragons of the CBA. In his first game with the team, Oden dropped 23 points and 14 rebounds, but his team couldn't pull out the victory.

Regardless of the win or loss, it's good to see Oden playing basketball and being healthy again.

Greg Oden has jaw-dropping Chinese basketball debut
http://nypost.com/2015/11/29/greg-oden-has-jaw-dropping-chinese-basketball-debut/

But Oden insists his story still is being written, and he’s taken to the Chinese Basketball Association when no NBA team would take a flier. After one game with the Jiangsu Dragons, the NBA and its fans are reminded of just what a special talent he is.

Oden put up 19 points, 23 rebounds and four blocks in 17 minutes, an otherworldly performance in another world on Sunday. The Chinese league is not the NBA, of course — this is the same league Stephon Marbury dominated and players such as Steve Francis, Gilbert Arenas and Tracy McGrady made stops at — but still, that statline in a 79-76 win reminds of the optimism that once followed Oden wherever he went.
