    Greg Oden charged with battery

INDIANAPOLIS -- Prosecutors in Indiana have formally charged former No. 1 NBA draft pickGreg Oden with battery for allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face during a fight.

The free-agent center was charged Monday with felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury, misdemeanor domestic battery, and misdemeanor battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

Since when is punching someone in the face a freaking felony???

Getting on top of someone and beating the hell out of them maybe but one punch is a felony?

y0yoyoin That is a serious injury for Willis McGahee

Sounds like he will face serious jail time or just a 2 game suspension

Re: "If you know anything about guys in the Air Force," Greg explained, "it's that they drink a ton. My cousin got wrapped up in the NBA lifestyle and threw parties at my house all the time. So I got wrapped up in it too. When I played well, I'd drink to celebrate. And when I played poorly, I'd drink to forget. That second year in Portland I pretty much became an alcoholic."

No it's not. Just wondering if he "fell of the wagon" and alcohol played a role in this.

Well, he actually punched her in the face three times and broke her nose according to the Indy Star newspaper. Link to Indy Star story. I would expect he's facing a Class C Felony Battery charge since 1.) it resulted in serious bodily injury or 2.) it's committed with a deadly weapon or 3.) it results in injury to a pregnant woman or one knew or should have known victim was pregnant. If convicted, he faces 2-8 years. Not good and never, in any circumstance, is it ever acceptable to ever hit a woman.

Good story on Oden with the latest developments:

    The Trials of Greg Oden

    .
    .
    .
Oden's trial was originally set for Oct. 22, but a judge granted a delay Monday until Nov. 19. He is free to leave Indiana but remains on a court-ordered GPS tracking device until his trial.
    .
    .
    .
But on a night that allegedly played out like Aug. 7, it turns ugly. Among the details that stood out to sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, professor emeritus at the University of California-Berkeley who counseled the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors on sports, family, race and ethnic relations over nearly four decades, in Oden's arrest documents was the juxtaposition of his alleged rage as he punched his girlfriend and the calmness with which he described the incident to police in anticipation of the likely consequences.

"I'm more appalled by that than I would be if he just temporarily lost his mind," Edwards said. "Because what he's saying here is, 'Hey, I did this. Punish me. Give me what I've got coming.' If he was rational enough to go there, then he was rational and considerate enough not to beat on that woman."
The timing of Oden's case places him squarely at the center of national controversy and debate as both the NBA and the NFL point to stiff conduct policies now in place to punish those who commit acts of domestic violence.
    .
    .
    .
If Oden, a free agent, is signed, he could be subject to suspension if he is convicted or pleads guilty or no contest to any of the charges, according to league disciplinary guidelines. A first offense in the NBA generally warrants a 10-game suspension but could be expanded at the discretion of commissioner Adam Silver.
    .
    .
    .
Edwards, who has counseled pro athletes involved in domestic disputes, examined Oden's case and believes it's essential to avoid linking his history of injuries, depression and alcohol issues as mitigating factors to a violent outburst against a woman.

"Is there any possibility that his chain of disappointments could have had an impact on his expressed frustrations?" Edwards asks. "Absolutely, because he's human. But beating on a woman simply is not an option. And for someone that high profile to do it, I don't want to hear about any of his bad luck."

Former OSU Star Greg Oden Makes Deal To Settle Battery Charges

Former NBA No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden has struck a plea deal with prosecutors to settle battery charges involving a former girlfriend.

The Indianapolis Star reported Tuesday that Oden pleaded guilty in December to felony battery with moderate bodily injury while three other charges were dismissed.

Court documents say a judge fined Oden $200 and ordered him to complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, alcohol counseling and 909 days of probation. A no-contact order also was put into place.

Greg Oden considering NBA comeback attempt, Ohio State coach says
    [IMG]

In November, Greg Oden said he wasn’t interested in making an NBA comeback.

Perhaps the former No. 1 pick’s plans have changed.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta, in a Q&A before the NCAA tournament:

    Q. Have you had much contact recently with Greg Oden? How is he doing?

COACH MATTA: He’s doing great. It’s funny, I see Greg every day. He’s back in Columbus. Comes in, works out. I don’t know quite honestly if I’ve ever seen Greg as happy as he is right now in terms of everything is going great in his life. He’s made a lot of personal commitments to change. Having him around literally every single day and spending time with him, there’s no greater feeling. I’m excited for him.

    Q. Coach, since you see Greg all the time, is your sense that he’s still got some NBA left in him? Is his career over?

COACH MATTA: I tell you what Greg is doing right now, he’s probably been six months of high-level conditioning, training in the weight room, working out on the court. Our coaches work him out. I think he’s right now trying to gauge how the body feels. There is a possibility he may make another run at it. He looks great. Probably about 280 pounds right now. I mean, quite honestly I haven’t seen Greg look this good since when he played for us back in the day at Ohio State. Like I said, his attitude is off the charts. He went through a lot. You look at Greg’s life, how difficult things have been. I know that he is a kid that never wanted to let people down. The injuries, you know, none of us can prevent those. I know there’s part of him that wishes that stuff couldn’t have happened. I still swear he was going to be one of the greatest to ever play in the NBA just from the year I was with him.

GREG ODEN SIGNS WITH THE CHINESE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION'S JIANGSU DRAGONS

Greg Oden isn't ready to call it quits just yet.

The former No.1 overall pick was last seen in the NBA with the Miami Heat for the 2013-14 campaign, and now Oden will need a passport.

The former Ohio State standout has signed with the Chine Basketball Association's Jiangsu Dragons, according to a release from the club:

    北京时间8月12日讯,据江苏肯地亚总经理史琳杰透露,前NBA球员格雷格-奥登签约江苏男篮。

    2007年NBA选秀,格雷格-奥登以状元被波特兰开拓者队选中,但由于伤病原因,效力开拓者五年期间,奥登只出战82场比赛。2013年休赛期,奥登一年合同签约迈阿密热火队。

    .
    .
    .
It's a one-year contract, and Oden will make $1.2 million. Not a bad fiscal year in the least.
