HOW KALEB WESSON'S COMMITMENT IMPACTS OHIO STATE'S RECRUITING EFFORTS

After years of underwhelming post play following the departure of Jared Sullinger, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta seems to have figured out exactly what he wants out of his 2016 and 2017 recruiting classes: Matta wants to go big.

At least that's the impression the Buckeyes are giving off, anyway, with the addition of 6-foot-8, 280-pound four-star big man Kaleb Wesson on Friday night. At that size, he was also a highly-touted football recruit along the offensive line playing at Westerville South High School, located near Columbus. But, for now, it appears Wesson has opted to play on the hardwood at the next level.

    WESSON EXPANDING HIS GAME
If you missed Birm's article on 2017 commit Kaleb Wesson, check it out here.

His humility – despite the hype surrounding high school athletes committed to play for Ohio State – is impressive.

"I'm not actually sure why (Ohio State) offered me so early but I did have a really good summer," Wesson told Eleven Warriors. "They have told me that I have low post scoring which they haven't had in the past few years and that I bring something different to the program."

The future Buckeye big man competed at the first NextUpRecruits Ohio camp in October. Even with his frame, Wesson displayed some ability to put the ball on the floor and hit jumpers. He knows modern power forwards or centers need to be more versatile to avoid being constrained to the low-post area. Although he is certainly crafty down there too:

Needs to work on his feet a little bit but he has a really soft touch. Seems to get a little off balance on most of his possessions which will be a killer against big boys in the BiG. Lots of time to improve though and get stronger.

I'm the same age as his father Keith. The elder Wesson was a Niles Red Dragon. I know this because I once had the pleasure of having "SPALDING" imprinted on my forehead by him courtesy of a slam dunk. I was glad when I got to Ohio State and saw he was now on our side. Even happier to see his son follow in his foot steps.

Doubt if he makes the 12 man roster for the FIBA World Championship games but it is still a very nice honor and playing against some of the best will only help with his development.
