Also, one of my points of irritation with Spectrum is that they wanted to raise my rate if I dropped my home phone.

Prior to this engagement with them, they used to force that “Triple Play” shit here as well. I just never let the installer hook up the phone. They had a no phone option this time.

My biggest bitch with them right now is they force you to have at least 1 box which is an extra $8 a month and of course wanting to charge extra for DVR service which used to be included.

The key to cutting the cord is to get a good deal on an ISP. If your only options are Spectrum and AT&T you are pretty much screwed. Luckily I have WOW as well. I currently get 100 Mbps for $40 and I think their newest deal is 200 Mbps for $35. Those are all 1-2 year deals, but there is no contract so I just have to call in when the price goes up and get another deal. WOW seems to be content being an ISP over a cable company.
Completely agree, and WOW has been the best internet provider I've ever had. It never goes down, it's always within a stones throw of the advertised speed, they've been easy to work with and they reached out to me to upgrade me from 60mbps to 500mbps at the same price.

My wife and I just had this conversation...this is why I can't see going back if I can help it. I don't need to pay you $8/month for a box and I definitely don't need to pay you extra for DVR. Buy your shit if you can. I have a $90 modem going strong after 4 years (vs. almost $500 I would have paid over that time in modem rental) and I have ~$150 worth of Fire TV's (vs. something like $750-1000 I would have paid for boxes) that are not going as strong, but I'm looking to replace them with some new Chromecasts by the end of the year.

The wife isn’t liking Spectrum and wants to go back to YouTube TV. She liked how we had the menu customized and hates the Spectrum remote. Plus I’m not paying extra for DVR which was free from YouTube.

Me on the flip side is considering leaving Verizon and going to Spectrum’s mobile service. That could easily save me ~$100 a month.
LOL its funny Spectrum runs on VZs network... just get ready to deprioritized and slowed down when congestion on the network picks up

I'm assuming things have changed now, but in my old neighborhood TWC had normal speeds and the DSL option maxed out at 3 Mbps since they didn't have fiber in the neighborhood. That was probably only 8 years ago. I'm glad I bumped my link from 30-100 Mbps before the kids had to do school from home.

yeah spectrum max’s out a a 980MB ... i’m at 200 now ... dsl best case would be like 10 or15...

I'm not sure if they still make them, but an HD Homerun with a cable card (if you pay for service) and a Plex Pass to get DVR is a pretty good option if you want your own hardware. I think the cable cards were only $4 a month. That way you can just record to your home computer and stream on any device that has Plex. I use the HD Homerun without a cable card and I get all the basic cable channels and locals in HD.

I'm a big fan of Roku, but mainly the larger ones with Ethernet ports since I have wires near most of my TV's. I have 3 of them and tend to upgrade one every year or two when they have a black friday deals. I bought a 4K Fire stick a few weeks ago so I'm going to try that out in my office. I have one older Chromecast, which is good where I use it, but is more of a pain since I can only control it with my phone.

I looked into a HD Homerun 4 years ago when we moved from DirecTV to Vue. I don't remember why I didn't go that way, but we ended up with a Tablo TV with a HD and an antenna for local channels.

And the lack of remote is why we haven't used Chromecast in the past. I have a friend who bought one of the new ones with Google TV and the remote and has a lot of good things to say so far. My plan was to upgrade every 2 years, but it's been 4 and only recently have we started having issues. Either way, I'm coming out ahead of where I would be paying for a box.

Looks like I will be getting streaming TV service for 3 months. Really liked Youtube TV last year, but that price increase has me wondering a lot. It's only $30 more for the time frame, but still causing me to pause.
According to CNET, Hulu's the best option right now. Anyone agree with that?

I tried HULU last year and didn't care for the interface, particularly for "recorded" stuff. And I couldn't get around commercials for a lot of their programs. But that was a year ago. To keep the wife happy simplicity is critical, and I love youtube from that perspective.

Have been using and happy with Roku/Hulu for a couple of years now. Seems to run quite warm for the stick? That usually means a shorter life span buy the price is reasonable. Interface is still clunky but I believe that will update with time. Old Sony Bravia TV still looks great plugged into an expensive PS Audio surge protector. Everything is using clean electricity and surge protected.

I'm in NW Ohio and just went back to Spectrum after a few months without. Put the service in wifey's name to get the new subscriber price for internet only ( $50 for 200/15) We had planned on just using Hulu with live TV for TV, ( just works best for us) and started getting all kinds of special offers for different TV packages. Decided to try it again for a month free and they don't require a box here if you are streaming. No problems with my Samsung smart TV, but the ones that have Roku devices connected have a lot of buffering issues just in the Spectrum app. It's completely different than the Spectrum app on the Samsung. Think I'll just stick with Hulu since it has everything we want.

Same Here. Hulu works well for us and has everything we want, my only real complaint is the interface is a little funky.

For youtube, is there a simple way to record the thing happening next (or later that day) on the channel you're on?

It seems designed to give you quick access to what's on right now, or a specific keyworded show that you can search for. What I'm trying to learn how to do is to open one of the suggested live tv programs, and then arrow to the right 1-6 hours to see what else is on soon. Without having to find that channel in the giant list of channel options.

I never found it when we had it. It was like you had to record the series.
