Game Thread Cal Bears at tOSU - Sat, Sep 15, Noon ABC

Its great to come out with a Win. This could have easily been a loss.

I am disappointed where the team is. They are a good team but certainly not a great team. There just isnt the same passion and fire within this team that most all elite teams have.

I wish the team and the fans would have more passion on gameday.
I think we are getting better and hopfully one day we will be an elite team.
I also think of Alabama, Saban didnt get where he is in one year. It takes time.

Hopfully we get better and do great things! Go Bucks!

IMO, Braxton played okay. Yes, there were some drops, but he also uncorked some bad throws, and missed a few open guys. And that interception was horrible. It's to be expected, though. He's still learning and getting comfortable in a brand new offense. He still put up excellent numbers, and that speaks to his potential.

Try seeing those "open guys" when you are standing behind 2 lines with only seconds to make a decision and not at home on your couch.

Ill rarely bitch about open receivers. Its difficult to see on a level playing field with people in your face.

We have different opinions.

But many QBs do see open guys with people in their face. That's the difference between "good" and "really good" or "great". I think, in time, Brax will get there. But, I still think he was only "okay" today...and I'd wager Urban and Herman would agree.

Thats not saying much, lol.

Not faulting you, its just easier to criticize when your not playing. I guess we will agree to disagree.

I would agree with you that Braxton isn't a "great" QB yet. He's talented and really good in the offense.

To me he looked handcuffed today. Urban, just like the players, has some learning to do as well. He needs to adjust the play calling and adjust to find a balance to suit Braxton's talent. Iron these things out and you have great potential for this teams future.

As tough as that game was to watch it was a win. Can you imagine how the Cal fans must feel? Come to a place that's almost impossible t0 win in, pretty much dominate most of the game but miss 3 FGs, have a TD called back on an unnecessary hold and give up a TD on a badly blown assignment. Missing tackles is one thing but when you're not even in a position to make a play is even worse. Cal has some talent but I'm beginning to believe in the "Kevin Riley Curse". Ever since that game when they were ranked number 2 and lost to Oregon State on that bonehead play by Riley they have been sort of an enigma. Sometimes they look great and other times they're inexplicably bad. I kind of feel bad for their fans to be honest

The Good: Resilience, made the plays when they need them, didn't panic
The Bad: Team was somewhere else in the 3rd quarter, let an inferior opponent stay close, was dominated at the LOS
The Ugly: 156 yards rushing on 3 carries? Basically won on a bad decision by the opposing coach to go for a FG instead of a 1st down.

That's what college QBs are supposed to do...that's part of the game. Even Speilman was saying Miller too many times either locks onto his initial read or even has his mind made up before the snap who he's going to throw it to. He missed open guys on a couple plays by throwing to his first receiver without even scanning the field, and those were plays where he wasn't even under pressure yet. He had some great moments and several herpa derp moments.

Indeed I wonder if he was reading short to deep as from my vantage point in #A he took quite a few 5 yard outs in the flat when he had someone open deep down the middle of the field.

Also did anyone else notice the complete lack of substitutions other then grant/klien and orhian johnson switching out for each other based on packages in most of the second half? Our defense looked gassed there and it seemed like they refused to roll in fresh bodies till that final series. Same with Dunn never getting in in the backfield it was always hall/brown. Seemed odd espicially with Hall just coming off an injury.

Today forced me to remove the rose colored glasses... I now completely understand Meyer's statement about consistency.. and why this isn't a great team yet.. no consistency

I wondered why Stoney's # isn't called more... seems that when the play isn't designed to go to him... he doesn't make an effort to get free

Our DBs didn't seem to make a lot of effort to shake off blocks.. they got blocked and stayed blocked

We got spoiled over the last decade.. our defense seemed to be prototype tacklers.. they were the best at wrapping up.. outstanding technique... somehow we're missing that.. we want the big hit but we don't wrap up like we're used to

I miss the days of Hawk & Laurinaitis in the middle

I'm moping cuz I lost all my vBucks
