Calling Out the Boosters

AKAKBUCK said:
Blame both... but the 'boosters' don't get to go to 6000 compliance meetings a year and stand nothing to lose if they get caught.
Why should boosters need compliance meetings? That's like saying that someone should NEED a Surgeon General's warning to realize that inhaling large quantities of smoke on a daily basis is a bad thing. It's common sense, and any college football fan would have to have their head waaaaaaay up their ass to not know that passing out cash to players is both against the rules and destructive to the program that they pretend to support.

I love the Buckeyes, and in bothers me deeply that there are people out there who claim to love the Bucks just as much as I do, while also knowingly doing things to harm the program and the individuals who comprise it.

My point is that blame whoever you like but the onus is on the players... (Of course the boosters don't and should't need to attend compliance meetings.. and the do have their heads way up their asses... money or not... ever read Bucknuts? :wink2: )

I guess I'm looking at this from the opposite perspective. I'm just slightly older than the players on this team, and I know if somebody came around just passing out free money, I'd probably take it myself. I mean, how can we as a society blame them for doing so when we exalt people who go on tv and eat a plate full of donkey balls for that kind of money?

I don't think there's an excuse for Donkey Ball eating either. :wink2:

I don't know what shows your watching but I can truly say I have never watched (nor would I sit through) a show where someone was eating donkey balls.

You need to be looking at other channels.

Its about right and wrong and if osu knows who the booster or boosters are thats fucking these kids up then they should kick them out of everything osu.

I'm tired of this "blame all the players" bullshit. Yeah, they deserve some blame, but these boosters are presumably grown ups who are well versed in the rules, and who know these kids could fuck up their future by taking money. These boosters are slime balls who just want to be close to program, and are fucking it up instead. I want an investigation!! I want names goddamnit!! Why are these kids the sole fall guys?

What will that solve? Everyday, each one of us is faced with moral decisions. If you could steal something and get away with it...would you?

The kids are the ones with something to lose. They are the ones who must resist temptation for themselves and for their teammates.

So many people complain about the coddled athlete, the greedy athlete, the selfish athlete...when are they held accountable? Do they get a free pass while in college?

For me, it all boils down to individual acountability. Without hardship or trial, how do these athletes learn they are not above society?

I'm sorry but I disagree with you here. The boosters are wrong 100% but the decision to hurt the program lies inthe choices of the player.

It's not "free" money in the case of the players...they're being paid, above and beyond what they're receiving from the school, for their services as a football player. Carrying your defense to the next level, politicians shouldn't be jailed for taking bribes and there's nothing wrong with corruption.

I guess the point I'm really trying to make is this: Seeing the kinds of crazy things people will do for money illustrates to me just how important money is to people. We live in a society where almost anything has a price. The desire for wealth is as old as society itself, and will be around long after Troy Smith, you, or I. Troy Smith is going to take the harshest punishment for all of this, and the corrupt will continue on their merry way without him.

Think about the Garden of Eden story. Was Eve wrong to eat the apple? Damn right. But wasn't the Serpent still the greater evil? Instead of telling everybody that goes to Ohio State to stay away from the Serpent, only to act surprised when shit keeps happening, why don't we do more to go after the damn Serpent?!

YEAH!! how dare us hold a player responsible for their actions! its not like they have the ability to choose between right or wrong.

.... no wait.. *ponders*

if i put a single round in a revolver, give it a good spin then hand it to you and offer you 10 mill to put it to your head and pull the trigger once. who is to blame for the mess you make on the wall?

no one makes them take the money. they know taking it is bad. they know the consiquences. if they act... they have no one to blame but themselves. you are flat out responsible for your own actions PERIOD. no matter what the legal system says. mr. smith thought the risks were worth the rewards. he took the chance. he got burned. hope it was worth it *shrug*.
