02/07/2007: Newton signs with the Florida Gators, where he plays sparingly for parts of two seasons

11/21/2008: Newton arrested on felony charges of burglary, larceny, and obstruction of justice

01/05/2009: Newton "transfers" from Florida to avoid three pending academic fraud charges, enrolls in Blinn College, a JUCO institution

2009 season: Newton leads Blinn College to a JUCO national championship, again becomes a highly-recruited prospect. Meanwhile, Cecil Newton, Cam's father, "shops" his son to various colleges. Auburn boosters make six-figure "donations" to Cecil's "church".

02/03/2010: Newton signs with Auburn.

November, 2010: Mississippi State breaks the SEC omertà and turns in co-conspirator Auburn, claiming that Cecil Newton required $180,000.00 for his son's signature on a Letter of Intent.

11/30/2010: Auburn declares Newton ineligible after the NCAA substantiates Mississippi State's allegations. Auburn has a 12-0 record at the time, and Newton is the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

12/01/2010: Auburn moves for Newton's re-instatement. Under severe pressure from ESPN, the NCAA grants Newton's re-instatement, justifying its decision by saying that the son can't be held accountable for the sins of the father. Newton goes on to win the Heisman and lead his team to the 2010 national championship.

04/28/2011: Newton drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers.

2011-14 seasons: Newton puts up big numbers but leads his team to a mediocre 31-33-1 record as a starting quarterback (regular season and playoffs) during his first four seasons.

2015 season: Newton has a breakout year, earning league MVP honors while leading the Panthers to a 17-1 record and a Super Bowl appearance. Newton also popularizes "dabbing", a "dance move" glorifying illegal drug use.

02/07/2016: Newton bombs in the Super Bowl, completing 18 of 41 passes (43.9%) for 265 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception as the Carolina Panthers lose to the Denver Broncos by the score of 24-10. Newton also has two critical fumbles: Denver recovers the first in the end zone for a touchdown. With his team down six points late in the fourth quarter, Newton fails to dive on his second fumble, and even backs away from the scrum in order to avoid injury. Denver recovers at the Carolina 4-yard line and quickly scores the game-clinching touchdown.

02/07/2016: In post-game comments, Denver defensive players essentially call Newton a gutless and selfish pussy for not attempting to recover his second fumble.

02/07/2016: In his post-game interview, a visibly-sulking Newton somehow manages to make Marshawn Lynch look cordial and eloquent by comparison.

Does that about cover it?

Removing ones helmet/cover was a precursor to the modern military salute. It's a symbolic gesture of respect.

Oh, it's also part of the US Code:

§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

Funny you mention that... my buddy said he didn't feel good about the game until saturday when the money started pouring in on Denver's side. I talked to another friend said Saturday morning the line was 5 by the end of the day it was down to 4.... so in less than 8 to 12 hours the day before the game you had a full point change in the spread from the bookies... I'm not saying he was throwing the game... but he mighta been throwing the game.

The way the military does things may seem silly... but the dedication to wearing a hat at all times* when you're outside is one of those things. It's drilled into you to be instinctual so that nobody "accidentally" takes their shit off in combat to wipe sweat or anything.

Military salutes are also different depending on a couple factors. With hat and no rifle is what everyone knows. With firearm, you salute to the rifle instead of the hat. Without hat, you stand at attention.
The Air Force does things differently.

*exception for flightlines cuz sucking hats into jet engines isn't cool


Anyway, thought this was interesting. Defense wins championships.
