FYI:
DVDs and ISO's are standard definition; NOT HD; unless its dual sided discs. You need advanced software to do that; to burn 720i and 1080i. The reason older .avi conversions are not as good as more recent is because they were converted from standard 4GB DVDs that fit 2 hours at standard definiton, 3-4 hours at slightly lower quality. 8GB Dual layer discs (It's one sided, just 2 layers on that one side) Can fit 2 hours of HD ; 4 hours of standard. I used to use them a long time ago to fit 3 hour movies or 4 hours of TV episodes of something like HBOs The Wire. But they're damn expensive.
What I am trying to say is: If you want the best quality; you should connect a laptop or desktop to your big fat flatscreen; and play the files using VLC media Player. If you want the best quality. Its either that, or Burning BluRays. If you DO decide to play off a computer; use VLC media player shift and right or left click to go fwd and back 3 seconds at a time.
I burned all my classic football and Buckeye stuff to DVD but its also archived on numerous hard drives, an internal and 2 externals. One day I'll have a backup PC tower in a cabinet hooked up hidden away in my entertainment center; when I really really want Quality; like the new Star Wars; I'll pull out a remote keyboard and remote mouse; and just select on TV remote the other source; like we all do to toggle between cable and DVD player. EVERYTHING is HDMI now; its so much simpler. But costlier; HDMI cables are at least 15$.
