Can Clemson Beat Us? (formerly Can we beat Clemson?)

The counterpoint is that you could make many of the same arguments against us. Our OLine was mauled by Michigan, MSU and Penn State ; JT right now has serious problems throwing not just the deep ball, but any ball > 10 yards ; our offensive playcalling (QB draw + sweep, anyone?) has left a lot to be desired throughout the year ; and our receivers (besides Noah) are highly inexperienced and get minimal separation.

We've played a much tougher schedule than Washington, and we've beat better teams, but many of the same fundamental criticisms that apply to them apply to us. Lastly, although JT is a mobile QB, I don't think he can be effective that way against the Alabama DLine if the downfield passing game does not develop.

You've definitely watched more of Washington than I have, and your concerns are probably true, but I think they've got a puncher's chance. And if they don't, I don't think we'll have much of one either considering our OL and passing game.

yes i agree, but the effect would be less extreme. OSU's defense is much, much better than WSH's and even against a very good D and complete ineptitude calling plays, OSU was still able to weather the storm and stay in the game vs MICH (and obv should have beaten PSU) because the D is incredible..as soon as field position flipped and Urban pulled his head out of his ass and went tempo with more than 3 damn plays MICH couldn't stop it. MICH also has more weapons offensively, perhaps not as collectively explosive as WSH's, but they also have an NFL head coach and an NFL TE, so they can be much more balanced in the passing game than the occasional 40-yd bomb that only goes 37 yds.

the problem with WSH is they are completely 1-dimensional against any good, balanced defense because Browning is awful under pressure. they are capable rushing and capable throwing, but they are not elite at either..their numbers are drastically inflated because of the competition they've faced, and that proved true again last night. he was terrible again even against CU's bad pass rush because CU's secondary is elite..he's damn lucky he didn't turn it over twice in the 1st half alone. against Alabama that would translate to half-a-dimension, if you will, because Bama is strong both on the back end and up front, so they can neutralize both avenues of WSH's potential success. the only reasons WSH rolled last night were a) CU could not stop the run early and their best player went down in the 1st Q b) they missed 3 interceptions in the 1st half that would have given them insane momentum, one a pick-6 right before half and c) kept Liufau in the game with a sprained ankle after 2 terrible picks--i love the kid but he needed to be yanked because he now couldn't plant off his right foot nor scramble effectively and the offensive edge they had coming in was gone. that pick-6 right away was effectively a 14 pt swing and completely sucked out any energy they had left.

WSH cannot rely on fluke injuries and missed opportunities against somebody twice as good as CU because the talent pool at Bama is too deep. Browning floated 2 deep balls early and if the DBs turn around and either of those interceptions are actually made the entire game script changes drastically in CU's favor (Liufau isn't likely hurt, which then forces the trick plays from Petersen because WSH would need to swing it back in their favor, etc etc). that's not to say that Bama can't opportunistically miss big plays against WSH that would keep them in the game as that's certainly in the range of possible outcomes, but it is to say it's much less likely to happen and much less likely to snowball as much as last night if it does because Bama is better defensively all-around.

do they have a chance? sure. but if we're comparing OSU and WSH against Bama in something like a 10- or 100-game sample, WSH gets pounded much more often than OSU. in a 1-game sample it all comes down to execution.

It won't really matter what we do if we don't figure out the offense. Not just being balanced with run/pass but also balancing who rushes the ball.

We will not win with JT running 30 times against Bama if we win our first round. Heck we probably don't win doing that against Clemson. We have got to find a way to find a rythem on offense between giving JT, Weber, Samuel, and even Dontre the ball. Personally I don't see it happening and while I wouldn't be surprised if we beat our first opponent I would be shocked to see us beat our next opponent after that (unless Washington wins their first round).

I have no confidence in our offensive staff to develop cohesion, balance, and to become multiple in 4 weeks when we haven't done so in two years. Normally things like this are just who we are and that's what I believe. It doesn't mean we won't win but it sure means we probably aren't all the sudden going to see an offense that's firing on all cylinders

It doesn't matter who we play. It doesn't matter if the offense drastically improves. Alabama isn't some mythical juggernaut. If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that this team has been thoroughly tested, and has responded extraordinarily every time. Even against PSU it's not like tOSU rolled over.

We're going to win another national title and I'd appreciate it if everyone here started acting like it. Basically, bitch up and choose positivity. The extra socks will be worn. The wappa-goo revolution will be televised. Govern yourselves accordingly.

This thread needed this post.

I'd like to add, tOSU (us? we?) came together in a big way with the OT win over scUM. They needed a big win like that. We have a lot of talent. However, it means nothing if they aren't connecting. When those guys went out there and beat our biggest rival on the national stage, it's a feeling only they, as teammates, will ever know.

After I saw the team celebrating Samuel's TD, it gave me confidence that in the next month they may gel & improve.
