absolutely. the dollar amounts doled out to corporate bigwigs is staggering!

here's a question..if some real genuine effort was made to redistribute the wealth of say everyone with a net worth over $5 million...could everyone in america live the good life?

I am a capitalist.
While I agree Carly should not be rewarded for screwing things up I hardly agree that redistibution of wealth is a good thing.

I work hard for what I earn. I cannot imagine having to give any more of my income to people who refuse to learn, work hard or endeavor to better themselves.

While I am not defending ridiculous corporate pay if you ever talk to one of these folks, even President level people at small and medium businesses you will see they work 80-100 hours a week. They travel constantly and much like we are doing here, every decision they make is second guessed. They have taken risks and invested in themselves in ways the average Joe cannot imagine. I doubt they watch Survivor, American Idol or their college football team on TV.

I think all corporations should have profit sharing and the CEO's pay and benefits are out of control.

It would be interesting to run the numbers and divide the GDP by the population see how it averages out.

I will, I hope to have but never need my own golden parachute someday. Supply and demand! What would the next highest bidder pay for this person? The stockholder equity Jack Welch created at GE divided by his compensation was minuscule. Isn't that a better way to determine compensation?

If you graphed compensation vs. stardom it grows exponentially, it is very similar in all industries: business, pro athletes, coaches, ect.

Like nola said many of these people work very hard and more than that they bring a lot to the table. Don't hate the players in the game of capitalism.

BTW:

GDP/Pop: $38,874

GNP/Pop: $36,657

Average Income: $29,944

There would be a bigger difference if you did it by household or factored out those not looking for work (children, students).

The extremely rich make up such a small part of the population it wouldn't make much of a difference, especially if you only scraped off anything over $5M. Obviously GDP would tank if we were a socialistic society.

Who's left to do the work if we're all living the good life? This has always been the flaw with the "Utopia" idea, that $5 mil becomes just "paper" very quickly when no-one is doing the work that needs done day to day. You can't import every good and service. There's only ever been one way to make everybody equal (economically speaking) and that's to make everyone poor.

In ways Jack was the exception to the rule and many question his methods.
Remember Neutron Jack?

Thanks for the stats I was too lazy to look them up.

I agree you should be paid for increasing investor value and profits but the CEO does not do it alone or contribute that much in many cases.
If that was the case most would just slash to the bone to boost profits thus boosting share price in the short term. That was the MO of many.

Gerstener got credit for changing IBM but what I think he really did was let the people that wanted to change IBM have their way. He did not provide a single patent or lead a successful consulting gig. Sam did and he got the job. Time will tell how he will do but I know he has slashed the business partner discount which is in effect taking a considerable price hike without the public knowing about it.

So yes I think you should get paid more for being a leader than a worker.
But I think your compensation should be tied more to profits and long term investor growth. You cannot forget the working man either..

Anytime a single individaul takes credit for an entire companies success you know they are not a true leader.
