Cavs are atop NBA in national TV games

Franchise-record 33 next season is most allowed

By Tom Reed

Beacon Journal sportswriter

<!-- begin body-content -->The Cavaliers, who once went nearly three years between national television appearances, are reaching maximum exposure.
The Cavs will play afranchise-record 33 games on national networks in the 2006-07 season, according to the NBA schedule released Tuesday.
What does it say about the rising status of LeBron James and the Cavs? The 33 games are the most allowed for any NBA team.
That's right, not even the Los Angeles Lakers or Miami Heat will be televised more often in the regular season.
``Everyone in this organization realizes what special and unique story is unfolding in Cleveland,'' said Tad Carper, the Cavs' vice president of communications. ``The national broadcast schedule is a reflection of that.''
The Cavs' first two games -- at home against the Washington Wizards (Nov. 1) and in San Antonio versus the Spurs (Nov. 3) -- will be telecast by ESPN.
The franchise made 15 national TV appearances in James' rookie season of 2003-04. Prior to James' arrival, the Cavs had not drawn a national TV audience since December 2000.
The Cavs went 50-32 last season and came within one win of the Eastern Conference finals. They have an opportunity for a quick start next season: Nine of their first 15 games are at home.
The Cavs host the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 21 and Feb. 4 and the defending champion Heat on Feb. 9 and April 5.

Cavaliers replace veteran announcer

Michael Reghi is out after 12 years; job goes to Pistons' announcer

By Tom Reed and Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal staff writers

<!-- begin body-content -->Michael Reghi is headed into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame -- and is out of work as the distinctive television voice of the Cavaliers.
The franchise announced Wednesday it's replacing Reghi -- whose signature calls of LeBron James' dunks have become an ESPN SportsCenter staple -- with Detroit Pistons play-by-play TV announcer Fred McLeod, a Strongsville native.
``The Cavs want to go in a different direction'' with their game broadcasts, according to a statement released by team President Len Komoroski. That direction once again is pointed toward the Detroit region, home of franchise owner Dan Gilbert, whose Rock Financial company sponsors Pistons home games.
Since purchasing the franchise during the 2004-05 season, Gilbert has revamped the Cavs' game-night presentation in the Pistons' image. Gilbert has known McLeod for nearly two decades.
The Cavs will make no other changes to their broadcast teams, according to the statement.
Reghi is believed to have been blindsided by the news, which he received Monday night. He was disappointed and disillusioned by the timing of the announcement, as it will be difficult for him to apply for another NBA broadcast position for the upcoming season.
The Cavs said they could make no personnel changes until a new contract with FSN Ohio was in place. A new deal is expected to be announced soon and will include expansion of FSN Ohio's coverage after the 2006-07 season.
Reghi has been the Cavs' TV play-by-play announcer for 12 seasons with FSN Ohio and 10 seasons with WUAB (Channel 43). The Cavs will buy out the two remaining years of his contract. He has called NBA, Major League Baseball and college games on the national and local levels for 20 years.
Reghi is being inducted into the state's broadcast hall of fame in October. His calls of James' dazzling plays had become so routine on ESPN that the network did a feature on Reghi's descriptions. His voice-overs are included on one of James' Nike commercials.
``Cleveland is my home and where my heart belongs. I've poured extreme passion into my work with the Cavaliers,'' Reghi said in a statement thanking fans.
Reghi elected to remain the Cavs' broadcaster in 2003 after his fellow employer at the time, the Baltimore Orioles, asked him to choose one or the other. He will continue to provide Browns coverage for FSN Ohio.
The Cavs termed Reghi's work ``exemplary'' and thought it was respected by fans and fellow broadcasters, according to the team's statement. It also is calling McLeod's return to Cleveland a homecoming.
McLeod, who handled the Cavs' play-by-play duties for the 1979-80 season, has been the voice of the Pistons on cable television for two decades.

Cavs' firing of announcer seems unfair

By Terry Pluto

<!-- begin body-content -->I'm still trying to figure out what Michael Reghi did to get fired as the Cavaliers' TV voice.
I ask that question not being a close friend of Reghi. Nor was I a huge fan of his work or his quirky broadcasting style.
Reghi is a professional acquaintance. I don't know him well. But I do know he's been a loyal, hard-working and effective broadcaster for 15 years. He's also built a sizable fan following and has been a very strong, positive voice for the franchise.
So why fire him with two years left on his contract?
Even more importantly, why wait until August?
Why not make the move after the season, when jobs open up and he can find work with another NBA team?
In a statement, Reghi wrote that he was ``disillusioned'' by the firing, especially the timing. Who can blame him?
Firing Reghi makes little sense, unless there is a side to this story that has yet to be told. But waiting until August, when the basketball job market is tightest, just seems unfair and cruel.
The Cavs claim they couldn't change broadcasters until now, when their new deal with FSN is finalized. But they had no trouble finding a way to can Matt Guokas as color commentator a few years ago.
Reghi found out Monday night. He had no clue it was coming. He was not given a real reason for the change, other than the team ``preferred to go in another direction,'' according to someone close to the situation.
Yes, the Cavs will pay the final two years of Reghi's contract. Yes, there are far more people in far worse economic shape than Reghi. Yes, he probably will find another broadcasting job -- eventually.
In fact, FSN is keeping Reghi on board to do its Browns shows, so obviously the station likes his work. It's the Cavaliers that bounced him.
Reghi has assembled a respectable resume, including seven years as the TV voice of the Baltimore Orioles from 1997-2003. After the 2003 season, the Orioles wanted a full-time commitment from Reghi. He had to choose between Baltimore and Cleveland, and he went with the franchise that he considered his own.
Other than the legendary Joe Tait, Reghi's voice is the one most associated with the Cavaliers. Tait is still under contract. The Cavs say there are no plans to make any changes, and they are pleased with his work.
Obviously, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and his staff didn't like something about Reghi. Or at least, they liked Detroit Pistons broadcaster Fred McLeod more.
McLeod just resigned from his work as the Pistons' broadcaster on Detroit's FSN station and announced he will soon be leaving his TV sports gig on WDIV in Detroit.
McLeod worked in the Cleveland TV market in the 1970s, but has spent the last 22 years doing Pistons basketball. He supposedly has a long relationship with Gilbert dating to when Gilbert was an intern at a station where McLeod worked.
McLeod will have to overcome the fact that some fans will view him as a Detroit guy brought in by another Detroit guy (Gilbert) to replace a Cleveland guy (Reghi). It also will be seen as Gilbert hiring a buddy, and wanting to ``Piston-ize'' the Cavaliers.
McLeod is known in Detroit as someone who seldom criticizes the team he covers. That was not true of Reghi, who was reasonably candid.
Gilbert has done so much to revive his image in the eyes of the fans and to improve the franchise. This is his first stumble in a year. It's not a major fall, because a winning team is the ultimate bottom line, but it just seems so unnecessary.
Dropping Reghi won't matter much in the ratings, because Gilbert has LeBron James signed for at least four more years. Alvin and the Chipmunks can broadcast the games and, the numbers still will be big.
Or, at least, more fans will watch TV and listen to Tait on the radio.

NBA
Case of mistaken identity gives Eddie Johnson the worst day of his life

Friday, August 11, 2006

Eddie Pells
ASSOCIATED PRESS

<!--PHOTOS--><TABLE class=phototableright align=right border=0><!-- begin large ad code --><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE align=center><TBODY></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Eddie Johnson is still getting over what he calls the worst day of his life.
He scratched his way out of the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago, fashioned a long and successful NBA career, turned that into an opportunity on television and built a reputation as an all-around good guy who loves to work with kids.
His worst scrape with the law involved traffic tickets.
Now he’s dealing with a case of mistaken identity that shocked him and his friends and, he fears, may have permanently sullied his reputation.
"Devastating. Hard to explain," Johnson said yesterday.
Eddie Johnson was mistaken in some media reports for another Eddie Johnson — a retired 10-year NBA player from Florida who was arrested Tuesday night and charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.
The Eddie Johnson who had nothing to do with that hideous accusation is a former Illinois standout who had a 17-year career in the NBA. But when some media reports about the alleged crime included his biographical information and file photo, his phone started ringing.
"The thing that disappointed me the most is some people were overzealous enough to think it was me and attack me with a ferocity I can’t comprehend," Johnson said from his home in Phoenix.
Edward Arnet Johnson is 6 feet 8, does color commentary on Phoenix Suns telecasts, gives motivational speeches and runs basketball clinics for youngsters. He retired from the NBA in 1999 and is 47.
"He called me really upset about it," said Charles Barkley, a former teammate of Johnson’s. "He’s such a good dude. It’s an unfortunate situation."
Edward "Fast Eddie" Johnson, Jr. — the one being held in a Florida jail on sexual battery and burglary charges — is a 6-foot-2, two-time NBA All-Star who played most of his career in Atlanta. An Auburn alumnus, he retired in 1987 and is 51.
When Eddie Johnson of Phoenix was still playing and Eddie Johnson of Auburn was retired and getting into frequent trouble with the law, there was little problem differentiating between the two.
Now that they’re both out of the game, the chances are better for a misunderstanding like the one that occurred this week.
Eddie Johnson of Phoenix said he wants to get the word out about who he really is — and isn’t. "My name is everything," he said. "I don’t fault the other Eddie Johnson for having that name. I think it’s a great name. He just doesn’t happen to be a great guy."

Cavs' quiet offseason is by design

By Brian Windhorst

<!-- begin body-content -->Many Cavaliers fans have been expressing their frustration on talk shows, message boards and in e-mails about the team's lack of movement this summer.
To understand the team's reasons, you have to look at numbers and the current NBA landscape.
For the mainstream fan, the dry topics of the salary cap and the luxury tax line often can be confusing and tiresome. Those economic realities, however, are driving General Manager Danny Ferry's battle plan this summer, especially how it relates to Drew Gooden.
Taking nothing else from the forthcoming explanation, know that as of this moment, the Cavs have committed about $55 million in salaries for next season and about $60 million for the start of the 2007-08 season, when LeBron James' new $43 million maximum salary extension kicks in.
They are now, and will be for years to come, over the salary cap.
Just a year ago, the Cavs were $28 million under the salary cap, but that is the way it goes in the NBA, and perhaps one of the reasons Gordon Gund decided to sell when he did.
After hitting $2 million in incentives last season, the largest coming when the Cavs won their 47th game, Larry Hughes' salary this season will be almost $13.4 million, $3 million more than his base salary last season. Donyell Marshall reached about $400,000 in incentives when the Cavs won their 48th game and reached the second round of the playoffs, kicking his salary for next season to $5.63 million, about a million more than last year's base.
That $55 million number does not include Gooden, who has a one-year so-called qualifying offer of $5.3 million on the table if the two sides can't come to agreement on a long-term deal. Next year's total also does not include Anderson Varejao, who will be a free agent and in line for a massive raise on his $945,000 salary this season.
The luxury tax line this year is $65.4 million. There are many reasons why it is costly to be over that threshold, many of which only an accountant truly can grasp.
Most importantly, for every dollar you spend over the limit, you are taxed a dollar, and that money goes to your competitors who are under the tax line.
Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has said he does not want to be a taxpayer. Not because he's cheap, but because he sees how teams like the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons can win titles while not paying the tax.
Next year's luxury tax line probably will be about $67 million to $68 million, which is why the Cavs are being very careful how they deal with Gooden.
If Varejao is to be re-signed, he and Gooden simply won't fit under that number with the current salaries on the books.
It is also the reason the Cavs haven't been eager to use their salary-cap exceptions ($5.2 million for the mid-level and $1.8 million for the biannual) this summer -- especially in a free agent market they think is weak. If Gooden takes the one-year deal to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, using both exceptions this summer would make the Cavs a taxpayer now.
Simply put, the Cavs are not willing to cross that line just to sign a player like Gooden or any other free agent. Someday, Gilbert might do it if he feels his team is close to a title, and the spending could put them over the top.
That day is not at hand.
Therefore, expect the Cavs-Gooden stalemate to continue, and for Ferry to exercise great discretion when it comes to signing any more free agents.
Dribbles
• The Cavs remain interested in free agents Reggie Evans and David Wesley, among others.
It doesn't appear the Cavs have made a formal offer to Evans, who has a $1.75 million offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves and also has received interest from the Denver Nuggets, who want to spend less than $3 million to stay out of the luxury tax.
• Details about the max contracts James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony signed have emerged.
James and Wade get 15 percent trade kickers (bonuses) if they are traded. Anthony got 5 percent or $1 million, whichever is more; Bosh does not have one. Zydrunas Ilgauskas also has a 15 percent trade kicker in his deal.

Gooden's representative, Calvin Andrews, told ESPN.com on Monday that his client has agreed to terms with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a three-year contract worth about $23 million.
Re-signing Gooden was the Cavs' other main priority this offseason, after securing LeBron James' signature on a contract extension last month. The lack of further free-agent activity in Cleveland isn't surprising after its spending spree last summer to re-sign Zydrunas Ilgauskas and bring in Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones.
"It was a long negotiation, but ultimately Danny Ferry was very fair and professional throughout the process," Andrews said of the Cavaliers' general manager. "At the end of the day, Drew is very excited to re-sign with what he feels is a team on the cusp of a championship. He feels he has found a home with the Cavaliers."

Gooden originally sought a deal in the same range as the six-year, $60 million pact Nene received from the Denver Nuggets, or the six-year, $57 million contract Al Harrington is expected to net from the Indiana Pacers in a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks. But Gooden and Seattle SuperSonics forward Chris Wilcox -- another restricted free agent likely to sign a three-year deal worth $20-to-$25 million -- found their options limited.
The few teams with salary-cap space either targeted other players or aren't spending their money, and teams interested in offering their mid-level exception to Gooden or Wilcox -- contracts starting at $5.3 million -- feared the Cavs and Sonics would simply match those offers.

Gooden, who averaged 10.7 points and 8.4 rebounds in his fourth pro season, also could have elected to sign a one-year deal worth $5.3 million, enabling him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. But Gooden opted for the added security of a three-year deal, setting up Cleveland to bring back the group that surged in the second half of last season to finish 50-32 and stretch Detroit to seven games in the second round of the East playoffs.

From here, with a payroll fast approaching luxury-tax territory, Cleveland will likely have to construct trades to make major personnel alterations, as the Cavs rush to establish themselves as unquestioned championship contenders before James has the right to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2010.
In the short term, though, Ferry is counting on the continuity of a largely unchanged roster, improved health for Hughes and the natural progression of James and the emerging Anderson Varejao to build on the successes of the spring. James turns just 22 in December.

With Gooden returning to Cleveland, Wilcox believed to be staying in Seattle and Harrington still likely to wind up in Indiana, Sacramento's Bonzi Wells and Denver's Reggie Evans are considered the biggest names left on the free-agent market. Nice deal from the Cavs' standpoint. Like him or not, Gooden is an important offensive player for this team. He's a good shooter and rebounder.

Now, perhaps he can get some private lessons from Brown on the defensive side of the ball.

Aside from maybe signing Wesley, I can't imagine any more moves for the team.

Just make sure you find 25 minutes a game for Varejeo, whether its at C or the PF position.

Agree 100%... IMO I don't think Varejao is quite ready to bring his energy for 35 or 40 minutes a game as a starter. Gooden was a solid role player last year, and like the article said, I like the idea of continuity for a second year. Now most of these guys have played together for a year and chemistry is a key ingredient in taking the step from a good team to a great team.

It's a good deal, especially if we can't re-sign Varejo after this season. Gooden's a good player, but he seems to have as many great games as he has bad games. I'm glad he's here. Hell, who knows? Maybe down the line he'll be a key cog in a big trade.

Cavs' gettin' is Gooden

Sides put disagreements aside, compromise on three-year, $23 million contract

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

<!-- begin body-content -->Unlike some contract squabbles, the six-week standoff between Drew Gooden and the Cavaliers never got petty or outwardly ugly. As a result, the two parties compromised Monday.
After talks intensified over the weekend, Gooden and the Cavs agreed on a three-year, $23 million package. Details need to be finalized, which prevented a formal announcement by the team.
The deal is believed to be shorter than Gooden and his agent, Calvin Andrews, were seeking. At about $7.7 million per year in value, it is believed to be a little richer than the Cavs wanted to pay. They seem to have met in the middle.
``We've said all along that keeping Drew was a priority,'' Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said. ``We've continued working to make that happen, and ultimately I think we can get something that is a win-win for everyone.''
As a restricted free agent, Gooden, who led the Cavs in rebounding with his 8.4 per-game average last season, was limited in seeking other offers. When the two sides couldn't come close in initial talks, Andrews looked for sign-and-trade options while the Cavs interviewed potential replacements such as Reggie Evans and Lorenzen Wright.
Both sides also hinted they'd be willing to let Gooden play out a one-year contract worth $5.3 million so he could be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Neither side truly preferred that option.
``Drew wanted to remain with the Cavs all along,'' Andrews said. ``The market wasn't great for him to get big money, so we decided to do something short term and reasonable.''
Two other moves changed the landscape of the contract talks.
The Chicago Bulls were believed to be ready to offer Gooden a large contract but never had to when they landed free agent Ben Wallace from the Detroit Pistons. Also, the Denver Nuggets signed free agent forward Nene to a six-year, $60 million contract that muddied the market for free agent big men.
``A lot of people were talking about that Nene contract being a holdup, but it wasn't at all,'' Andrews said. ``We knew that wasn't realistic.''
The final deal gives both the Cavs and Gooden flexibility. If Gooden's career takes off, as he and his agent expect, in three years he'll be in line for a much richer contract. This is a path Cavs teammate Larry Hughes took four years ago when he signed a three-year contract with the Washington Wizards before landing a $70 million deal with the Cavs last summer.
Also, with Gooden on a short deal with a reasonable salary for players of his size and skill, the Cavs probably would have no trouble trading him if they needed to in the coming years. With Anderson Varejao in the final year of his contract and LeBron James' contract extension due to kick in next season, the Cavs will want the ability to move players to control their payroll.
One option being discussed is giving Gooden a descending value contract, which pays him the most in the first year of the deal and decreases the following two years. This would ease a potential luxury tax burden the Cavs might face.
Both sides also seemed to win from a public relations standpoint. Andrews got Gooden a healthy raise from his $4 million salary last season and avoided the potential lose-lose situation of playing out a one-year deal. The Cavs got Gooden's extension done for significantly less than his 2002 draft classmates Tayshuan Prince, Mike Dunleavy and Caron Butler signed for in terms of their average annual salary.
``This should keep the core of our team together,'' Ferry said. ``That was our major offseason goal.''

Bite your tongue!!! We're going to sign Varejao next season. LBJ and Gilbert both love him so he's staying. Plus, ge's restricted and we have "Bird rights" on him.

Exactly. Varejao is the second most likely to say a Cav for a very long time. The new deal with Gooden makes him easy to trade if/when that is needed.

Anderson put up 25 or 26 in a close loss to Germany.

He also got hurt today, but Ferry said it was just a foot problem that he tweaked and nothing to worry about.

Yea Hawg, that contract is very good for trading if necessary.

<H1 class=red>Varejao’s foot injury deemed minor

</H1>

Plain Dealer reporter

Relax, Cavaliers fans. Anderson Varejao is not seriously hurt.
The Associated Press reported that Brazil lost Varejao with a foot injury during its 86-74 loss to France on Tuesday in the Stankovic Cup in Kunshan, China.
But Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry said the injury was not serious.
“He is doing fine, just resting,” Ferry said Tuesday.
Varejao, the Cavs’ energetic, 6-10, 240-pound power forward, missed training camp and the beginning of last season after surgery to repair the dislocated right shoulder he suffered while playing for Brazil in the FIBA Americas men’s world championship qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic last summer.
He came back to average 4.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 48 regular-season games last season and 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in the playoffs.
Asked whether he wasn’t worried about injuries to Varejao or LeBron James, who is playing for Team USA, Ferry said, “Injuries are a part of the game. Guys work out all summer. There is always concern.”
Ferry and Cavaliers coach Mike Brown will be going to Japan next week to watch the World Championships.
