Cavs 06-07 season thread

Time for the best part of the NBA... the offseason moves and signings.

Exhawg I agree with you about Gibson coming off the bench but I like another approach to the offseason. First off I agree about resigning Andy, he is a great bench big that can play both PF and C and will be needed as Z's minutes decline as he gets older.

But Sasha is a different story. I know everyone will want to trade Z, Gooden and Hughes and the rest of the spare parts (Snow, Jones & Marshall) but those guys are almost untradable as other teams don't want them and would only be useful as filler for any trade. Of course we can sign and trade Andy but he is too valuable to this team as Z's eventual replacement. So if we want to make some changes that leaves us one chip to trade, and his name is Sasha Pavlovic. He has shown enough talent to get us something back in trade plus he won't be making too much cash to be untradable.

An example of a trade is something I saw in a NBA rumors posting somewhere else (can't remember if it was Hoopshype or RealGM). But the thought is Toronto is interested in Sasha and might be willing to trade their backup PG, Calderon. And at some points he was outplaying TJ Ford this year.

So would you be willing to trade Sasha to get us a decent starting PG? Then you can slide Hughes back to SG. You have Gibson who can be the 6th man to come in for either Hughes or the starting PG. And also don't forget about Shannon Brown. Hopefully the year on the bench allowed him to get 100% healthy again and some practice time to be able to contribute next year.

If we can get a PG by trading Sasha it is easier to replace him as you can find scrap SG/SF all over the league for not much money that are decent.

And then the most important move of the offseason. Someone to convince Ferry to give Mike Brown an ultimatum. FIND THE BEST OFFENSIVE ASSISTANT COACH AND HIRE HIM. Or, Mike Brown you better polish off your resume cuz you will be gone. I doubt that will happen, but we really need to find someone who's sole purpose to to install an offensive system and run it.

IMO there is no reason to trade...We can try and sign a pg that can back up Hughes and take Snow's minutes...

We have Brown who will come off the bench and play some big minutes next year...

Really if this team can shoot the ball better, and LBJ can take his game up another level by being able to hit the jumper with more consistency we can go to the next level and we just keep our core together...

I second that! IMO the Cavs will be a formidable team for years to come.

I may have to set you to ignore for a few weeks, your signature is making me sick to my stomach still

(to be clear, that is cause your team is MUCH better than my Cavs, and nothing about your sig or you :) )

Congratulations, Cavalier fans on a season to remember. This team is a few pieces away from being a juggernaut!

I would take your coach over pat riley and phil jackson in a sec.
S.A is a true dynasty in today's NBA . So dang tough to keep players together that actually play team ball and listens/follows the coaching.

There's no question that LeBron James will be in the Cavs' locker room next season, but how many of his teammates will return?

CLEVELAND -- It was a moment the Cavaliers knew was coming all week.

Since a loss in Game 3 on Tuesday put them down 3-0 in the NBA Finals, it was never a matter of if, but when the Cavaliers would clean out their lockers for the final time as runners-up.
That day came last night, one day after the San Antonio Spurs completed a four-game sweep of the Cavs. No team had ever come back to win a championship series after losing the first three games, and it certainly wasn't coming against the Spurs, a team that has now won four titles in nine years.
Cleveland players yesterday deemed the overall season a success and the Finals a learning experience, something to build on going into next season.

Cavs answer questions in 2 seasons

By Terry Pluto

It was just two years ago that the Cavaliers had no coach, no general manager, a seemingly impulsive rookie owner and nothing but question marks about their future.
Don't forget that, as you think about where the team is today, the Eastern Conference champion.
``We are hanging a banner in the building,'' Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry said Friday. ``It is not the ultimate banner that we want to hang, but it's still a championship banner.''
One that the Cavs have never hung before. This was the first trip to the NBA Finals in the 37-year history of the franchise. Even being swept by the San Antonio Spurs doesn't change the fact that this was a remarkable season.

Cavs want to re-sign both Varejao, Pavlovic

Brazilian big man says he'd love to stay in Cleveland as restricted free agent

By George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - With the Cleveland Cavaliers' season finished, the behind-the-scenes work begins to build on what the team accomplished in the 2006-07 season.
On the court, there's only one way to top this year: Win it all.
The Cavs face the prospect of losing two important ingredients from this year's magical brew: forward Anderson Varejao and guard Sasha Pavlovic, who become restricted free agents this summer.
There's little doubt what General Manager Danny Ferry and coach Mike Brown want to see happen with those players.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
A pause from a quick rise

Sunday, June 17, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
He had to hurry now, faster even than his Miracle-Gro career had sprouted when the Cavaliers won the East.
San Antonio's Manu Ginobili finally missed, and the long rebound came to LeBron James. The Cavs were down five points, but James would attack again now, like an invader on a hostile shore. With a minute and a half to play in the fourth game of the NBA Finals, victory could still happen.
But James ran before he had the ball, and it clattered off his arm and rolled out of bounds. It was his sixth error of the game and the last in a depressing series of unforced turnovers he committed all during The Finals. Cleveland expected an overeager and unfinished product, a 22-year-old who went to the NBA straight out of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, to realize its dreams. The Cavs' ascension has been swift under General Manager Danny Ferry and coach Mike Brown -- first playoff series victory in 13 years last season, first NBA Finals ever this year. But the last step was not going to be taken this soon against a team as seasoned as San Antonio.

Analysis
Cavaliers can keep their core, or try to tweak their roster

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- So where do the Cavaliers go from here?

Coming off a historic season that includes their first NBA Finals appearance, the answer could vary. The front office first has to decide whether the current team is good enough to win a championship or further steps are needed.
Here are three major questions facing the Cavaliers this offseason:
